Concertino in F for English Horn and OrchestraPreviously known only through a spurious edition in G Major, the authentic Concertino in F was recently discovered in Italy by Pedro Diaz, English Hornist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Diaz prepared this ground-breaking authentic edition through comparison of the multiple historical sources and an intimate knowledge of Donizetti's works. The new edition in F Major is embellished with footnotes regarding sources and ornamentation. The piano reduction and orchestral score and parts (available on rental) were prepared by composer/oboist Mark Biggam in tandem with Diaz's work, and the publication includes extensive historical notes by scholar Michael Finkelman. PEDRO DIAZ joined The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in 2005 and has performed as solo English Hornist in hundreds of productions. As a sought after teacher, Mr. DÃaz has lectured extensively at top music conservatories including The Juilliard School, The Manhattan School of Music, The Eastman School of Music,The Hartt Music School, and Duquesne University. His international appearances include masterclasses in Panama, Italy, Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, Leipzig, Berlin, and Italy.A native of Puerto Rico, he received his early musical training in the “Escuela Libre de Musica,†an esteemed public school for the performing arts. In volume 1 of the New Schutz Edition Friedrich Schoneich presented the Historia der Geburt Jesu Christi. He had to accept that one source was considered lost. The volume was published in 1955 and, of course, Schoneich edited it within the framework of the musicological standards of his time.For her new edition, Bettina Varwig has now been able to take all known sources into account including the first print, copies of parts of the work which have come down to us in the Duben Collection, as well as the score copy from the music archive of the Berlin Sing-Akademie, which had been known only from fragmentary copies until it had been returned from Kiew. This enables a fresh view of the Historia on how it presumably was performed. The edition maintains the original note values and generally follows the editorial principles of the New Edition of the Complete Works.The Introduction centrally deals with the question how the Historia was performed at Christmas 1660 in the Dresden Schlosskirche and how it can be realised today. Also the scoring for singers and instruments (Evangelist movements versus concertante movements) is being appropriately discussed. The Unknown Journey was commissioned by Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band which was established in 1954 and has grown to become one of the top college bands in Japan. The composer chose the title as the piece seemed to create its ownmomentum as it developed, starting slowly and continuously increasing the tempo. This lovely Scottish hymn, also known as The Lord's My Shepherd, first appeared in 1929 in the Scottish songbook Northern Psalter, where it was incorrectly credited to David Grant, an Aberdeen businessman and amateur musician. It was, in fact, composed by Jessie Irvine the daughter of the parish minister at Crimond. This arrangement will be a musical jewel in your concert repertoire. Crimond ist ein geistliches Lied aus Schottland aus dem Jahr 1836. Falschlicherweise zunachst einem Geschaftsmann und Amateurmusiker zugeschrieben, stellte sich spater heraus, dass die Musik tatsachlich von Jessie Irvine, der Tochter eines Kusters, komponiert worden war. The 1818 publication of Francis Johnson's A Collection of New Cotillions marks the first known publication of original music by a black composer in the United States. A prolific composer, instrumentalist, teacher and conductor, Johnson led a varied and successful career in an era in U.S. history that was not inviting to black professionals. His musical interests ranged from the contemporary works of Johann Strauss Jr. to traditional, popular dances.The cotillion is a French country dance that was popular in Europe and America in the 18th century. It was originally danced by four couples in square formation and was an important influence in the development of the square dance in the United States. Francis Johnson composed two sets of six piano accompaniments for this dance. The original 1818 publication even included movement instructions for the eight dancers. The short and charming melodies that he composed are a fitting example of popular dance music of the time.This transcription may be performed as a piano solo, with the piano as a non-solistic instrument within the ensemble or without piano at all. Not much is known about the origin of Huntingtower, except for the fact that this ballad was composed in 1931 by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936), commissioned by Edwin Franko Goldman and the American Bandmaster Association, and was premiered on 17 April 1932 at a concert in memory of John Philip Sousa in Washington D.C. It is not even certain whether Respighi arranged the work himself, or left this to someone else. Huntingtower is the name of a castle in Scotland, where Respighi spent some time. It is possible that this ballad contains his musical impressions of his stay there. The orchestration on this CD, made by Franco Cesarini in 1987, is an adaptation ofthe work to the demands of the contemporary concert band. The rediscovery of the original manuscripts of Max Reger's works for violin, viola and violoncello op. 131a-d in the Prague Conservatory Library represents a small sensation.These late works for solo strings dating from 1914 and 1915, the last of which appeared only posthumously, were previously known only from their first prints. The three duosop. 131b for two violins were composed within a few days, shortly after Easter 1914; it is particularly in this case that access to Reger's autograph is of great value in terms ofproviding insight into the genesis of the works.
