Giuseppe Ottavio Pitoni (1657-1743) was an Italian organist and composer, and one of the leading figures in the late Baroque era. He wrote an extensive oeuvre of liturgical music, with over 200 motets, 300 masses, and800 Psalm settings. He bridged the gap between the counterpoint-driven styles of Palestrina and Scarlatti, and the more homophonic and harmony-driven works of Handel and Vivaldi, becoming a master of both styles in his own right. His setting of the Laudate Dominum (Psalm 150) is for unaccompanied SATB chorus. Having been edited by the noted musicologist J. Steele, it is a suitable motet for any church service, or would make aperfect recital item

Antonio Vivaldi composed not only instrumental music, but also vocal music with equal sensitivity and enjoyment for the girls at the Ospedale della Pieta in Venice. The Laudate Dominum RV 606 dates from this period. This choral piece is simple and homophonic, but through multiple modulations into distant keys it acquires its own very special charm. Accents are placed in typically Vivaldian style, individual words emphasized, and the venerable psalm text is accordingly given a new kind of meaning by the composer.

Laudate Dominum by Francis Jackson reacts very strongly to the feeling behind Psalm 117, and the writing for SATB and organ is tight, rhythmical, and has a strong sense of forward movement. There is a quiet contrast in the middle section, but the exuberant leaping figures return to round off the work. --Michael Fleming.

The composer Péter Andorka (born 1987) studied under Miklós Kocsár and Miklós Csemiczky at the Bartók Secondary School of Music and under János Vajda at the Liszt Academy of Music, both in Budapest. Apart from solo, chamber and orchestral works, several vocal compositions of his (oratorios and choral works) have been performed, and he has also composed for the stage. The Three Liturgical Chants to Latin texts were composed for six-part female choir in 2009. The text of the first piece (Lux aeterna) comes from the mass for the dead, that of the second (Laudate Dominum) from Psalm 116 (117 in many English translations), and that of the third (Adoro te devote) from a hymn by StThomas Aquinas, whose Gregorian chant is also incorporated into the work. The euphony and elaborate part-writing of the Three Liturgical Chants place a serious task before choirs, particularly in terms of intonation. Especially the wide compass of Lux aeterna requires a professional choir. The pieces in the cycle can be purchased separately (Z. 14941, 14942 and 14943).
