Gunter Habicht composed music for folk instruments and contributions to educational literature as well as works for wind orchestra, chamber and orchestral music, including the Sinfonietta, published in 1964 by VEB Breitkopf & Hartel Musikverlag Leipzig, and the award-winning Quartettino 1969 for wind instruments, created for a composition contest organized by the Association of Composers and Musicologists on the occasion of the GDR's 20th anniversary. With an easy piano accompaniment, the sonatina for clarinet and piano Temperaments, written in the same year, is particularly aimed at more advanced music students and amateur musicians. Each of the three movements represents one temperament (1. sanguine type, 2. melancholic type, 3. choleric type) that needs to be worked out during the rehearsals. From 1935 to 1939, Gunter Habicht (1916-2010) studied with Herbert Viecenz and Boris Blacher (music theory and composition) and with Walther Meyer-Giesow and Ernst Hintze (conducting) at the Dresden Conservatory. In 1951, Gunter Habicht taught at an elementary school in Leipzig, and in 1952, he was appointed specialist lecturer for music at the Zentralhaus fur Volkskunst. From 1955 to 1981, he was a teacher of music theory and clarinet at the Leipzig City Music School.

Bach's cantata My God alone this heart possesses BWV 169 is from his third annual cantata cycle in Leipzig; it was first performed on 20 October 1726 for the 18th Sunday after Trinity. As recent research has shown, the text was written by the Leipzig student, Christoph Birkmann. With the exception of the final chorale, this is a cantata for solo alto with, of course, a rich orchestral scoring consisting of three oboes, obbligato organ and strings. The first purely instrumental movement can be traced back to an instrumental concerto, which has been lost, after Bach had also composed the Keyboard Concerto in E major BWV 1053. The lyrical-vocal highpoint of the cantata is the fifth movement, which is also based on the concerto and it shows off Bach's arranging artistry to the highest degree. Among the movements are an aria-like recitative vocal movement, as well as another aria with an almost virtuoso organ accompaniment. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3116900.

Wohlfahrt’s Foundation Studies have long been successful tools forviolinists and violists in mastering the technical difficulties of theirinstruments. Originally conceived for a complete comprehension offirst position on the violin and viola, Richard Hughey presents thisnew edition for cello students. Transcribing these etudes for the cellopresents new challenges for the performer. Particular passages, forexample, require the student to make use of the second and eventhird positions. The fingerings chosen for these passages reflectthese shifting positions in a coherent and logical way. Trainedcomprehensively in both cello and conducting, Hughey shares hiswealth of experience and knowledge in Wohlfahrt’s FoundationStudies for the Violoncello. The violin etudes and exercises of Franz Wohlfahrt havebeen and continue to be used by violin and recently violateachers the world over. Franz was the son of HeinrichWohlfahrt (1797, Kößnitz–1883, Leipzig), a noted pianoteacher who also published many studies for piano thatwere very successful with younger students. Heinrichdeveloped a keen sense for the pedagogical development ofchildren and composed excellent studies accordingly. Withthe education of his sons Robert (1826, Weimar–deathdate unknown) and Franz (1833, Frauenpriesnitz–1884,Leipzig), he passed these pedagogical abilities to the nextgeneration. In the preface to his Violin Studies Opus 45, FranzWohlfahrt wrote:The study of the violin presents certain difficultiesfor beginners which are frequently the cause of a suddendecrease in the pupil’s zeal and ambition, even before he hasmastered the first fundamentals. The blame for this is commonly laid on the teacher, who is called incapable or negligent; losing sight of thefact that the pupil began his studies without the slightestnotion, not merely of the difficulties to be encountered, but also of the regular and diligent effort indispensable forovercoming them.It is important, therefore, to smooth these first severitiesby showing their usefulness and making them agreeable; tothis end my Violin Method was published and the presentexercises have been written, which latter may be consideredas forming a supplement to the former. If practiced carefully and intelligently, they will serve asa solid foundation for the technique of any player ambitiousto become an artist. These studies have been successful tools for violinistsand violists to begin to master the technical difficulties oftheir instruments. Clearly conceived for a more completecomprehension of the use of the first position on the violinand similarly for the viola, presenting these etudes forthe cello presents a new challenge. As ongoing violinistsand violists can use the fourth finger to play the note ofthe next higher open string, this is not possible on thecello. To perform these exercises on the cello, particularlyreaching the “E†on the A-string, requires the studentto make use of the second and even third positions. Thefingerings chosen for these passages reflect the necessityof shifting to these positions. This is of great advantage,as a new set of studies now can be used by the studentto practice shifting to and from those positions and thusincreases technical proficiency in the second and thirdpositions of the cello.

Originally written for piano, Grieg later scored his Holberg Suite for orchestra. Geoffrey Brand has done a masterful job of setting two movements of the suite - the Sarabande and Gavotte - for wind band. Give your students the opportunity to perform first-rate classical music they wouldn't otherwise have access to.Born in Bergen, Norway, into a family of Scottish descent, Edvard Grieg showed a talent for music early and at the age of 10 had piano lessons from his mother. In 1849 he went to study at Leipzig Conservatoire before moving to Copenhagen where he met Riokaard Nordaak, a young Norwegian composer who was immersed in Norwegian nationalism and greatly influence Grieg who felt his future was as a musician dedicated to romantic nationalism. Holberg Suite, originally for piano, was written in 1884 in response to a commission to mark the bicentenary of the birth of Ludvig Holberg, a Norwegian dramatist and satirist. A year later, Grieg arranged 5 movements for string orchestra. Sarabande and Gavotte are intended to be played segue but can, if desired, be performed separately. The music expresses Grieg and his native Norway in a manner which justifies his declaration I am not an exponent of Scandinavian music but of Norwegian..

This edition includes the full orchestral score, orchestral parts, as well as guitar and lute parts. Victor Van Puijenbroeck has adapted the original solo part and included in the set are parts for both lute (the part has been adapted from lute tablature to modern notation) and guitar (capotasto). Additionally, the solo parts feature two versions/interpretations. Albert Robert Mueller (Muller) was a German trombonist born in 1849. He initially received violin lessons and discovered his talent for trombone playing at the age of twelve. He eventually settled in Leipzig and became a member of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra as well as a teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Music. He wrote the School for Trombone in 1902. (Wikipedia) The School for Trombone (part of our Vintage Brass Series, not to be confused with the Technical Etudes) is a very detailed and comprehensive book in three volumes totalling 208 pages, the text being divided into German, English and Russian languages. * Volume I includes detailed lessons on music theory including all scales and keys, rhythm, time signatures, rests, accents, accidentals, explanations of tempo markings, dynamics, posture, tone, a table of positions and notes. The lessons go through different keys starting very slowly and methodically with short exercises....not going too fast for the beginning student. Along the way Mueller inserts easy duets to perform with teacher and student, including many Bach chorales, etc. to get tuning and tone solidified. * Volume II for the intermediate level student, begins with the first studies of slurs and legato. He introduces simple songs and famous melodies including more duets. The exercises get progressively more difficult and include the entire collection of ornaments. * Volume III, for the more advanced student, introduces tenor and alto clefs in scales and studies including more duets. Compiled by Gordon Cherry.

Music for a Leipzigcoffee houseand for other venues - Johann Sebastian Bach composed not only for the nobility and the church, but also for bourgeois musical culture. Among these works are the harpsichord concertos. They are noted down in a manuscript that is a unique and probably the most important document for the instrumental repertoire of the LeipzigCollegium Musicum.Bach arranged his concerto movements in such a way that the harpsichord is given a solo part that exploits the instrument'sclavieristicpossibilities to the full. These works thus fix a decisive moment in the early history of the piano concerto genre which received significant impulses from Bach and his circle of students. The autograph offers revealing insights into the composer's working methods, elucidated by Christoph Wolff in an accompanying essay. Martina Rebmann describes the genesis of the Bach collection at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, which holds the autograph. The facsimile in high-quality four-colour printing reproduces the extensive score in its original size; BWV and bar numbers on every page facilitate its use.

Choral singing, together with organ music, was considered in the 18th and 19th centuries the church-music form of expression per se. So, choral singing and choral music played a dominant role in the 19th century for the Bach revival. Though in many places the political and social upheavals of the Napoleonic era brought some traditional musical institutions to an end, the St. Thomas School with its music boarding school at Leipzig was able to hold its ground and - thanks to a lengthy reorganizational process - dovetail with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, which had in turn arisen from a middle-class society. For the 800th anniversary in 2012 of the Leipzig St. Thomas Choir, a symposium was devoted to the institutional and musical transformation of choral traditions during this time period. The volume presents the results of this conference in an expanded and revised form: Examined from various perspectives are performance-practice aspects, such as the instruments available, the age at which the voice breaks, or the changes in vocal style, and discussed are institutional questions such as the conducting by prefects, the autonomous self-education, or the St. Thomas students' choice of repertoire.Institutionen, Klangideale und Repertoires im Umbruch.

In 1721 a 20-year-old soprano employed at the princely court in Köthen married the court's Kapellmeister, set to become the greatest composer of the age. As his second wife she married into a young family with four children, and a busy household filled with music. The music book that Johann Sebastian Bach presented to his new wife Anna Magdalena in 1722, and replaced more lavishly in 1725, treats us to a tantalizing glimpse inside this unique family, allowing us to sit beside Bach as a composer, teacher, husband and father. Over the years, these notebooks became a place for the family to share instructional exercises, favourite pieces - by Bach and other composers - to play or sing, early composition efforts from the children, and first versions of some of Bach's more ambitious keyboard works.Drawn from Christoph Wolff's new and cutting-edge scholarly edition of the complete Anna Magdalena Notebooks, Edition Peters is proud to present a new volume of shorter and easier pieces from the notebooks, perfect for practical use by students of all ages and their teachers.Urtext edition by pre-eminent Bach scholar Christoph Wolff, Harvard Professor and former Director of the Leipzig Bach Archive Represents the very latest in Bach scholarship, reflecting up-to-the-minute research on texts, authorship and copyistsA selection of the most popular pieces from the two notebooks in a practical student edition Contains works for keyboard and vocal pieces, following the practice of musical education and performance in Bach's home.

The Austro-Hungarian composer Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) was musically precocious: At the suggestion of AntonÃn Dvorák, he receivedpiano lessons at the age of seven, and at the age of ten became a student at the Prague Conservatory. Further piano studies in Vienna, Cologne and Leipzig as well as composition lessons with Max Reger supplemented his education. His Jewish heritage, which defamed his music as “degenerateâ€, and his sympathy for communism, however, cost him his life. In Prague and finally interned in Wülzburg near Weissenburg in Bavaria, he died of tuberculosis. Schulhoff's musical significance lies in the integration of jazz into art music, for example in his oratorio H.M.S. Royal Oak or in his Hot Sonata for alto saxophone and piano. He earned his living as a jazz pianist for a long time. In August 1922 he wrote four short piano pieces, his Rag Music, to which he added four more phrases in November: released as Partita, also known as Jazz-like Partita - with the fashion dances Ragtime, Foxtrott, Shimmy, Boston and - as No. 7 - a tango. From a piano to a string quartet movement, the arrangement presents itself as a delicate and smart, technically not too difficult sweet, suitable as a diversion or addition in a quartet program.
