Although he was born in Split, Croatia, of Belgian descent, Franz von Suppé’s nationality is defined less by his actual descendents than by the country and city where he lived and worked and had the great majority of his success, the Austrian capital, Vienna. It was here where, with assistance from the Johan Strausses and Franz Lehar, he helped to assure Vienna’s reputation as the operetta capital of the world. He achieved this by pioneering operetta as a major medium for the theatre. The overture to Light Cavalry is one of his two most famous works, the other being the Poet and Peasant Overture written as incidental music for a play of the same name.Der Schauplatz von Leichte Kavallerie, einer komischen Oper in zwei Akten aus dem Jahr 1866, ist Ungarn. The Carl Fischer heritage of publishing fine band music has been a fact of music publishing almost since the firm's founding in 1872. Also included are terrific pieces by Daron Aric Hagen, Larry Clark, Quincy C. Hilliard and Elliot Del Borgo. The performances by the Washington and show the music and the players to best advantage. This will be a recording to own and treasure. Winds under the inspired direction of Edward Petersen, are invigorating.

This edition of Suppe's overture is based entirely on todays clearly defined editorial guidelines. By using all available sources the primary goal was the elimination of many well-known errors as weil as the clarification of some doubtful orchestrations in the overture. Suppe himself is giving only one flute in the autograph score, while the piccolo is conducted divisi with the flute throughout. This edition is free of any arbitrary additions by the editor. Obviously mistaken notes, which vehemently ensured confusions in previous printings, have been silently corrected. If additional remarks by the editor seemed necessary, these are clearly marked as such throughout: By dashing (eg. slures, crescendo hairpins), for dynamics, performance and technical instructions by the use of brackets [cresc.] etc.(Nick Pfefferkorn).
