In 2006 Brabant will be celebrating it’s 900th anniversary. On May 13th 1106 the count Van Leuven was appointed duke of Brabant. This was the birth of the duchy of Brabant. For centuries this duchy, situated in the heart of the Netherlands, was the primary of the seventeen provinces in the Lowlands. Brabant formed with it’s capital cities Brussels, Leuven, Antwerp and ‘s-Hertogenbosch the focal point for politics, culture and economy. The revolution against Spain (1566-1648) caused a fracture between the North and South. The old duchy was divided into a Dutch and Belgian part. Even though each had their own historical background, the bond forged in the past was partially keptalive. To this day we still have a duke of Brabant. Brabantia Aeterna takes you on a musical journey through 900 years of Brabant history. A fascinating journey portraying war and peace, love and grief, prosperity and adversity, development and deterioration. Listen to how monks chanted, bells tolled and churches were built. Or take the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries with their bustling markets, builders of cities or the bleating of countless sheep across the heather. The plague, tribulations, soldiers and political bickering in the following centuries. Hear how the industrialisation of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries provided prosperity for the region and how to this day the following saying still applies: ‘the road to Brabant leads to a warmer world’ Brabantia Aeterna was commissioned by the Brabantse Bond van Muziekverenigingen (Brabant Music Society) in honour of its fifth anniversary. In 2006 bestaat Brabant 900 jaar.

Dona nobis pacem and Lux aeterna were both written for concert programs devoted to specific themes. They share the use of the techniques of minimalism in their organ parts, enabling the broad vocal lines in the choral voices to stretch out above this instrument, thus imparting a special aspect to the concerns addressed by the texts: the longing for freedom in the here and now, as expressed in the Dona nobis pacem, as well as the desire for peace and tranquillity in the Lux aeterna.

Each of the five connected movements in this choral cycle contains references to 'Light,' assembled from various sacred Latin texts. I composed Lux Aeterna in response to my mother's final illness and found great personal comfortand solace in setting to music these timeless and wondrous words about Light, a universal symbol of illumination at all levels - spiritual, artistic and intellectual. The work opens and closes with the beginning and ending of theRequiem Mass, with the central three movements drawn respectively from the Te Deum, O Nata Lux and Veni, Sancte Spiritus. The opening Introitus introduces several themes that recur later in the work and includes an extended canonon et lux perpetua. In Te, Domine, Speravi contains, among other musical elements, the cantus firmus Herzliebster Jesu (from the Nuremburg Songbook, 1677) and a lengthy inverted canon on fiat misericordia. O Nata Lux and Veni,Sancte Spiritus are paired songs, the former an a cappella motet at the center of the work and the latter a spirited, jubilant canticle. A quiet setting of the Agnus Dei precedes the final Lux Aeterna, which reprises the openingsection of the Introitus and concludes with a joyful celebratory Alleluia. --Morten Lauridsen.

The composer Péter Andorka (born 1987) studied under Miklós Kocsár and Miklós Csemiczky at the Bartók Secondary School of Music and under János Vajda at the Liszt Academy of Music, both in Budapest. Apart from solo, chamber and orchestral works, several vocal compositions of his (oratorios and choral works) have been performed, and he has also composed for the stage. The Three Liturgical Chants to Latin texts were composed for six-part female choir in 2009. The text of the first piece (Lux aeterna) comes from the mass for the dead, that of the second (Laudate Dominum) from Psalm 116 (117 in many English translations), and that of the third (Adoro te devote) from a hymn by StThomas Aquinas, whose Gregorian chant is also incorporated into the work. The euphony and elaborate part-writing of the Three Liturgical Chants place a serious task before choirs, particularly in terms of intonation. Especially the wide compass of Lux aeterna requires a professional choir. The pieces in the cycle can be purchased separately (Z. 14941, 14942 and 14943).

Lux Aeterna Domine is a moving, a cappella piece that incorporates the Latin text for May light eternal shine upon them, O Lord. The antiphon Lux Aeterna Domine brings to mind the ancient custom of lighting candles during the Mass for the deceased and is thought to be a symbolic prayer for light. Written with beautiful harmonies and moving inner voice parts, this piece will surely be a choir and audience favorite. Perfect for high school, collegiate and community choirs.

Eero Sipila was an organist by training. His liking for Gregorian chant left its mark on his compositions in the form of stylistic borrowings or at least reflections. In one of his letters Sipila mentioned as his main work the quartet that was to be the last thing he wrote. The name Lux aeterna is a reference to the section in the Gregorian mass, melodic motifs from which dominate the entire quartet. There is no trace of the modernistic tendencies of the works composed in the 1960s, but the pungent seconds harmonies characteristic of Sipila are all there.

Otto M. Schwarz was asked by a friend to compose a chorale for the funeral of his child. Lux Aeterna (The Eternal Light) is actuallypart of the requiem mass, but in this composition, there is no reference to the original Latin text. People who recount near-death experiences often report a bright light. The music moves back and forth between passages that are sad, optimistic, and imploring in nature, posing questions that cannot be answered. The end of the piece comes, however, with a conciliatory major chord that reflectsthe calm and warmth of this light that promises redemption.

Arranged for SATB choir, two keyboards, strings, and optional harp, with soprano, tenor (optional) and baritone soloists, this fresh and unorthodox interpretation reflects on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposing them with poems in English. This final movement of the Requiem is set for SATB chorus and two or three soloists. Lilting triads begin the movement. The “Lux Aeterna†is set for soloists with choir accompaniment. There is a restatement of “Lead, Kindly Light†from movement 4, transformed a bit, for soloist with choir accompanying, then the choir sings this material in unison in a powerful, climactic passage. “Requiem aeternum†from the first movement is heard again here with a gently pulsing accompaniment, and the work ends quietly “Luceat eis.†Duration 8:59.

One of the great classics of 20th century choral modernism. Ligeti's thrilling 'Lux Aeterna' achieved global fame following its use on the soundtrack to Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film '2001: A Space Odyssey'. For 16-part Choir SATB, the work deploys Ligeti's technique of micropolyphony and uses cluster chords to create a densely buzzing haze of sound. Vocal Score.
