Thanks to a stipend from his patron, the Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel, Schutz was able to pursue a three-year period of study under Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice from 1609 to 1612, which he concluded with the publication in 1611 of the madrigal collection Il Primo Libro de Madrigali. Already in this, his Opus primus, Schutz emerged as an outstanding composer: In their musical quality, the 18 five-part madrigals exceed much that was still being composed in the traditional madrigal style at the beginnning of the 17th century.

Johann Hermann Schein's Israelsbrunnlein, published in Leipzig in 1623, is a supreme achievement not only among the works of this composer, who had been Thomaskantor in Leipzig since 1616, but also for the entire body of German music written during the first half of the 17th century. Among the 26 motets written in the Italian madrigal manner 23 are settings of Old Testament texts, a fact to which the collection owes its title. The source for the text of this collection is the inexhaustible fountain of the Psalms, the books of Moses, the Prophets, the Songs of Solomon, and other books of the Old Testament.

Gibbons seems to have been outside the process 'by which', wrote Joseph Kerman in The Elizabethan Madrigal, 'England first became sophisticated in the ways of Continental music.' This collection features five of the most popular choral works from the English Madrigal School, a brief period from the 1580s to the 1620s that followed the arrival of Italian secular polyphony on English shores. The name SAM-Klang takes the three voice parts from the arrangements -- Soprano, Alto and Men -- and combines it with the Scandinavian and German words for “sound†to create the portmanteau word “sound together†or “harmony.†The series offers basic and advanced choral repertoire. In addition to new repertoire and new arrangements, you will also find essential parts of the classical German, Scandinavian, French and English SATB repertoire, carefully and considerately reworked for SAM. The arrangements retain the characteristic features of the original movements and have almost the same richness of timbre, resulting in works which sound nearly unchanged to an audience. Piano reductions of all choral movements facilitate rehearsal preparation. The arrangements offer development opportunities for all voice sections, bringing new life and new quality to SAM choir work. SAM-Klang enables youth choirs to gain access to classical choral literature and ensures that mixed choirs who face challenges in finding singers for all male voice parts continue to have access to well-loved repertoire.

The poetry on which this composition is based is the Ballad of External Life (the Ballade des äußeren Lebens) from the pen of Viennese author Hugo von Hofmansthal (1874-1929). He is known for, amongst other things, his libretti for the works of Richard Strauss (Der Rosenkavalier, Ariadne auf Naxos, Elektra) and as founder of the Salzburg Festival. Von Hofmansthal was one of the last of the German Symbolists. Central to this literary movement was the unification of the internal and external worlds. The search for meaning was a cornerstone of this fin-de-siècle movement. In the Ballade des äußeren Lebens (Ballad of External Life), the meaninglessness ofexistence is expressed in restricting, oppressive metaphors—an ambience that is reflected in the music. Ultimately, man is capable of establishing order from seeming chaos. The poet expresses this powerfully in a non-rhyming line of poetry: ‘And yet, he who says “evening” says much, A word, from which profundity and sorrow flow’.This composition follows the overall structure of the ballad, which is written in terza rima—interlocking three-line rhymes. The choral work can be performed by a chamber choir, but also by a much larger ensemble. The parts are mainly in four voices (SATB), although there are also six parts (SAATBB). One chord is arranged for eight voices. The composer conducted this work at its première, to open the 2013 International Choir Biennial in Aachen. The choir was comprised of four chamber choirs: Aachen Youth Choir, Carmina Mundi, Aachen Chamber Choir and Aachen Madrigal Choir.

Poulenc's song cycle, Chansons Gaillardes was composed in 1925-1926 during the post-war euphoria. The cycle is essential to aspiring, advanced baritones. Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was a highly prolific composer, and remains popular to this day. Chansons Gaillardes was composed towards the beginning of the composer's career for Baritone Pierre Bernac. At the first performance, Poulenc himself played the piano and the song cycle was immediately a hit. Chansons Gaillardes is made up of eight songs which alternate between lively and slow tempos; 1) The Fickle Mistress, 2) Drinking Song, 3) Madrigal, 4) Summoning the Fates, 5) Bacchanalian Couplets, 6) The Offering, 7) The Beautiful Youth, and 8) Serenade. As a song cycle with much variation, it is an exciting addition to the baritone repertoire.

Long Road is a setting of a love poem by Paulina Barda (widow of the eminent poet Fricis Barda), who died in 1983 at the age of ninety-three; set in the original Latvian, it was Ešenvalds' contribution to Love madrigals, a collection of new commissions to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the remarkable youth choir Kamer . . . , and this English version was specially made for Stephen Layton and Polyphony, to whom it is dedicated. It has the plain sincerity of a hymn, being homophonic throughout, and its thorough-going diatonicism is straightforward yet lush. At the midway point, a gentle susurration of bell-sounds and ocarinas appears unexpectedly, there is a brief downwards shift of a third, followed by an elated return to the home key, decorated by soloistic descants, before sustained vocalise and a return of the evanescent tinkling ushers the piece to its close.
