Francesco Durante's Magnificat in B flat major is one of his most important works and also one of the most siginifcant settings of the Magnficat text, here in cantata form. This work displays a mastery of the polyhonic style and though the use of certain pre-classical, modern elements its various forms never sound archaic, rather the work presents a synthesis leading to a unique style. For a performance during the Christmas season, Christmas hymns can be inserted between each of the individual movements. Six arrangements of such hymns are also available as octavos (Carus 10.270/06): - Johann Cruger: Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland - Cornelius Freundt: Wie schon singt uns der Engel Schar - Johann Sebastian Bach: Uns ist ein Kindlein heut geborn - Erhard Bodenschatz: Joseph, lieder Joseph mein - Johann Cruger: Frohlich soll mein Herze springen - Gregor Joseph Werner: Der Tag, der ist so freudenreich The string parts for these movements are included in the complete orchestral parts Carus 10.270/19. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1027000.

Johann Sebastian Bach's Magnificat BWV 243 was composed in its first form in E flat, right at the beginning of Bach's period in Leipzig, for the Visitation of Mary on 2.7.1723; for a further performance on the 1st day of Christmas, Bach added four extra Christmas movements following a Leipzig tradition. Only in the 1730s did Bach arrange the Magnificat in the well-known version in D; the orchestration was slightly altered, particularly improving the considerable practical performance problems encountered in the E flat major version. Our critical new edition contains the version of the Magnificat in D, based on Bach's autograph score. For Christmas performances the extra movements are available separately, transposed for performance with the D major version of the Magnificat (Carus 31.243/50). Score available separately - see item CA.3124300.

Probably following a special Leipzig tradition, Bach added four extra movements to the first version of his Magnificat BWV 243a (in E flat major); these can be inserted in performances of the Magnificat at Christmas between the verses of the Magnificat. These are included in our edition transposed down a semitone, so that they can be performed with the widely-known later version of the Magnificat in D BWV 243. In addition to the separate publication of these movements, they are now being published as part of a newly-corrected complete score. Score available separately - see item CA.3124300.

Mention the key words Johann Sebastian and Magnificat, and one thinks involuntarily of his well-known Magnificat in D major BWV 243 or in E flat major BWV 243a. However, during the time of his tenure as St. Thomas Kantor, several times Bach also referred back to older settings of the Magnificat text and arranged these for his own purposes. Thus, for the first time it can be documented that in its original version the double choir Magnificat in C major BWV Anh. 30 contained in Bach's music library, which was originally handed down anonymously, was composed by Pietro Torri. Torri was the Music Director at the Court of the Bavarian House of Wittelsbach. For performance purposes in Leipzig in ca. 1742 Bach retained the substance of the work but composed additional parts for a 3rd trumpet and timpani. For the first time ever this splendid work appears at Carus in a printed edition. Score available separately - see item CA.3501200.
