O Magnum Mysterium is a setting of a Latin sacred text written for Christmas. The text depicts the extraordinary occurring among the ordinary: God coming to earth as a tiny baby, and animals in a lowly stable being the first to witness his arrival. Adding dynamic contrast (crescendo/decrescendo) on every phrase and singing legato (smoothly) with a gentle choral tone will reflect the wonder and awe the original text and this setting attempt to communicate. Ilian Lundberg (b. 1993, Sweden) almost exclusively composes sacred choral music, often inspired by models from the Renaissance and Baroque. He won the Summer Singers Composers Competition (Minneapolis) in 2018. His music has beenperformed in his native Sweden, Norway, France, the UK, and the US. O Magnum Mysterium (SATB, 2012) is Lundberg's first choral work, written at the age of 18. This elaborate setting rises out of the lower range of the men'svoices and takes on a Gesualdo-like chromaticism as it expresses the wonder of the O Magnum Mysterium text.

O Magnum Mysterium, commissioned by Marshall Rutter in honor of his wife, Terry Knowles, has had several thousand performances throughout the world and dozens of recordings since its 1994 premiere by the Los Angeles Master Chorale. I have also arranged the work for solo voice and piano or organ (recorded on Northwest Journey by Jane Thorngren accompanied by the composer), men's chorus and brass ensemble; H. Robert Reynold's stunning adaptation for symphonic winds was recently premiered in Minneapolis by the Thornton Wind Symphony. For centuries, composers have been inspired by the beautiful O Magnum Mysterium text depicting the birth of the new-born King amongst the lowly animals and shepherds. This affirmation of God's grace to the meek and the adoration of the Blessed Virgin are celebrated in my setting through a quiet song of profound inner joy. – Morten Lauridsen.

O Magnum Mysterium is one of the greatest texts for choral music from the Renais-sance to the present day but has some variations used by composers from Victoria to Poulenc. Gregg has chosen the version of the text that includes Dominum Jesum Christum and includes a final Alleluia instead of Amen. The image of the oxen and donkey next to the crib is found in Isaiah and is traditionally related to the nativity scene at the birth of Jesus in Luke 2. The image continued to spread from the 13th century onwards becoming the most popular symbol for the mystery. The second part of the responsory relates to the words with which Elizabeth welcomes Mary, mother of Jesus on her visitation. Gregg uses a mixture of notation styles in this piece with dissonant harmonies and instances of polytonal chords with a challenging piano part. The entire piece is based on the O Magnum Mysterium of Tomás Luis de Victoria. There is a wonderful insider joke on page 16 in the piano part at the beginning and following of the 6/8 meter where Gregg refers to the first notes of the lullaby Rock-a-bye Baby in the right hand. The concluding Alleluia section is greatly inspired by the Victoria setting. All metronomic values are editorial decisions. If possible, when the chorus is divided into two choirs, Choir II should be in the back of the hall.

A responsorial chant taken from the Matins of Christmas, the O Magnum Mysterium text has been set by many of the greatest choral composers in history, from Byrd, Gabrielli and Palestrina in the sixteenth century, to Poulenc, Bingham and Laurisden in the twentieth. This setting by Victoria is one of the most frequently performed, a beautifully simple example of Renaissance Spanish counterpoint now available to tuba-euphonium quartets of all levels, perhaps as something more unexpected in a festive programme.

Victoria's rich, mysterious and serene 4-part Renaissance Christmas motet, O Magnum Mysterium was written in 1572. The composer intended it to be sung at another service later in the year. Tomas Luis de Victoria was the most famous composer of the 16th century in Spain, and one of the most important composers of the Counter-Reformation, along with Palestrina and Orlando di Lasso. Victoria was not only a composer, but also an accomplished organist and singer. However, he preferred the life of a composer to that of a performer. He is sometimes known as the Spanish Palestrina because he may have been taught by Palestrina.
