The California Gold Rush began on January 24, 1848, when gold was discovered by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill, in Coloma, California. Using unique scoring techniques and multiple tambourines as pans, Eureka is David Shaffer’s musical depiction of the first miners attempts at panning gold from the American River and their perilous trip by horseback to San Francisco to stake their claim. Presented for the first time in August 1848 in Vienna, Johann Strauss Sr's Radetzky-Marsch is one of the most famous marches ever composed, dedicated to Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz. Strauss was commissioned to write it to commemorate Radetzky's victory in the battle of Custoza. Next to the waltz An der schönen blauen Donau - On the beautiful blue Danube - by Johann Strauss Jr, the Radetzky-Marsch has assumed the role of 'unofficial' Austrian anthem over time. When it was performed for the first time in front of officers, these began to beat their hands and feet to the rhythm of the music, giving life to a tradition often seen in many concert halls when the march is performed live. The Vienna Philharmonic always performs the march as the final piece in the famous New Year's Concert.

This Intermezzo was composed for the 3rd Annual Sul Ross State University Wind Ensemble Composition, and was selected as a winning entry. It's premier performance was on the 7th of May 2015 at the Marshall Auditorium, Alpine, Texas. With a gracious and slightly nostalgic beginning, the piece builds in energy and pace, leading to a triumphal finale. This piece has an effective and rare combination of flowing lyrical melodies with an almost military-like feeling towards the mid and latter sections; partly inspired by the excitement and power of American marching bands, as the piece was composed for an American University ensemble.
