Par SCHUBERT FRANZ. Mass No. 6 in E flat major, D 950, is a mass composed by Franz Schubert. It was originally scored for two tenor soloists, soprano, alto and bass soloists, SATB choir with divisi, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani, violin I and II, viola, cello, and double bass and is presented in this edition as a vocal score for SATB. Beethoven’s sacred works include two settings of the Mass. The “Mass in C major”, completed and premiered in 1807, has been unjustly described as a preliminary step towards the great “Missa solemnis”. Yet it is a self-contained and, for its time, decidedly modern piece of church music. Drawing on the rich body of sources, Beethoven specialist Barry Cooper suggests practical solutions to the work’s musical and interpretative problems. His deep study of the sources convinced him to include a fully realized organ part in the score, just as Beethoven envisioned it for the first printed edition. As stated in the sources, the parts for the soloists and choir are notated on joint staves to demonstrate that the soloists are also to sing the choral passages. Par DVORAK ANTONIN. Dvorák composed the “Mass in D major” in 1887 at the suggestion of his patron Josef Hlávka for the inauguration of the Lužany castle chapel. It is written for choir and organ with sporadic passages for soloists, uses simple expressive devices and makes light technical demands. Thus, this work is easy to perform, also by amateur church choirs - all that is needed is a small choir and the solo parts can be sung by members of the choir. The full score includes additional violoncello and double bass parts edited for the first time. Even if the authenticity of this statement, which was quoted by Anton Schindler, may be doubted, it reflects quite well the confusion that the Mass in C may have caused its commissioner, Prince Nicholas II Esterházy, in 1807. Unconventional for those times, here Beethoven opened up entirely new worlds of expression for the liturgical text, opening up new avenues for the further development of mass compositions in the 19th century. This important work of choral literature can now be performed by smaller forces thanks to this arrangement for soloists, choir and chamber orchestra. Instead of 12, just 5 wind instruments are required. The string parts can also be played by single soloists; the performance material contains suggestions about how to deal with the divisi passages. It opens an incompletely transmitted cycle of six masses which the composer himself designated as Missae ultimae. The musical text of the present conductors score is based on that of Volume 93 of the Denkmäler edition Das Erbe deutscher Musik. The new piano-vocal score has been edited by the reputable expert Andreas Köhs. Zelenka's artistic personality, his biography and his compositional style are utterly distinctive. His style is highly experimental. Was Zelenka really one of the greatest composers of the 18th century, or only one of the most interesting? I think that he still has several surprises for us.
