The C Minor Mass K. 427 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a fascinating work. But to speak of the Mass is inaccurate, for basically it is no more than a musical torso, full of enigmas and problems, yet full of magnificent music. It is hardly surprising that attempts have been made to create a performable version of Mozart's fragment since the 19th century. Depending on the date of reconstruction and background of the arranger, these attempts sound quite different, and often the individual style of the respective arranger can be clearly discerned. Now Frieder Bernius and Uwe Wolf have published a new edition of the Mozart mass which attempts to produce a performing version whilst maintaining the greatest respect for the available material, and without obscuring Mozart's musical manuscript with their own contributions. The joint version by Wolf, a renowned musicologist, and Bernius, an expert in historically-informed performance practice, is based on a thorough knowledge of Mozart's compositions, his notational habits, and church music practice of Mozart's day. At the same time it fully meets the requirements of today's performance practice. Carl Friedrich Christian Fasch's Mass in 16 parts is remarkable for more than its unusual scoring. Inspired by the Italian church music style of Orazio Benevoli, it was composed in 1783 for the Berliner Sing-Akademie, and revised by Fasch several times throughout his life in order to adapt the score to the vocal capabilities of his ensemble. The composer destroyed all earlier compositions, which probably contributed to the legendary fame which this mass has enjoyed since the 19th century. The mass was, however, only published in 1839 - around four decades after Fasch's death. The present edition is based on the version contained in the first printed edition. In addition to modern music notation, extensive performance materials (two choral scores, separate organ part) facilitate the rehearsal of this challenging work. In 1866 Anton Bruckner composed his solemn Mass in E minor, which he revised extensively in 1876-1882. Composed for a performance in the open air, the work stands out among Bruckner's Masses and those of his contemporaries because of its scoring, omitting strings and organ in favor of an accompaniment for wind and brass instruments alone (Harmoniemusik). This scholarly-critical new edition of this second version takes into consideration for the first time the surviving parts from the Bruckner Archive at the St. Florian Monastery and the choral parts rediscovered in 2016 in the Linz Cathedral Choir Archive. Franz Schubert's Mass in G major is one of the most popular settings of the mass ordinary: the charming song-like melodic writing, especially in the Kyrie and the Credo, forms a magical counterpoint to more concertante passages in the Gloria and the Sanctus. For a long time it was thought that Schubert's final version was scored for purely string orchestra, whilst a version with wind, brass, and timpani was thought to be an expanded orchestration by his brother Ferdinand Schubert. However, since the mid-1990s it has been known that the parts for trumpets and timpani were additionally composed by Franz Schubert himself for use ad libitum. The present edition offers this Klosterneuburg Version - with trumpets and timpani ad libitum, but without Ferdinand's wind parts - in an Urtext edition reflecting Schubert's own intended orchestration. The House of Esterhazy commissioned what are probably some of the most important masses to be written at the turn of the 18th to the 19th century: Joseph Haydn's last, six great masses, Beethoven's Mass in C major and the masses of Johann Nepomuk Hummel. The resonance in the contemporary musical press upon the publication of the B flat major Mass of 1816/17, Hummel's first Esterhazy mass, was exceptionally positive. In addition to the rather simply constructed wind parts, which can also be played by the organ, the work places greater demands on the strings and choir (without soloists) to master an effect-laden, expressive diversity ranging from pastoral simplicity and martial trumpet calls to artistically wrought fugues which is rarely encountered. The Missa in d, composed around 1750, is one of the few surviving compositions of Altnickol. He was the student and later son-in-law of Johann Sebastian Bach. The wealth of forms and at the same time, the clarity of this composition show the influence of his teacher, but above all it shows the expression of an individual style of church music. With its contrapuntal mastery and musical depth this Kyrie-Gloria Mass, presented here in a first edition, represents a high point in this widely disseminated genre. This Missa in G minor is the only surviving work in this genre by Johann Hugo von Wilderer; his output as Kapellmeister at the Electoral Palatinate court, which resided in Mannheim from 1720 onwards, was mainly devoted to opera. The three-part Kyrie, the through-composed Gloria, and the partly obbligato instrumental writing show the influence of the early Neapolitan mass style. The music-historic significance of the Missa is firstly that it is an important example of the church music performed around 1700 at the Electoral Palatinate court, but above all that Bach evidently used it as a source of inspiration for the Kyrie of the Mass in B minor, as shown, for example in the form of the Adagio introduction of the Kyrie I in both works.
