In Memoriam: For the Fallen was commissioned by Bolsover District Council for the Bolsover Brass Summer School 2014. It is a setting for narrator and band of Laurence Binyon’s (1869-1943) poem, For the Fallen, which was first published in The Times in September 1914. Binyon was dismayed at the outbreak of war and especially concerned by the large number ofcasualties suffered by the British Expeditionary Force in the early months of the battle on the Western Front. Too old to enlist, he volunteered as a hospital orderly in France. The poem is known world-wide as the famous fourth stanza (They shallgrow not old…) has become a regular part of Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day services. In Memoriam: For the Fallen is a musical accompaniment to the poem, shadowing the mood of each stanza. Lepoème est connu mondialement, sa quatrième strophe, They shall not grow old...

The piano series entitled Games, written from 1973 onwards, was conceived as a piano method. As the years went by, the series lost its didactic character, at it came to be seen as a document from Kurtág's workshop, offering a key to his grander symphonic, chamber and vocal works as well.Tenth volume is divided into two parts: In the first half, earlier, hitherto unpublished pieces line up from Suite, written in 1943, to the 1980s, providing insight into the development of Kurtág's musical language. The second half includes pieces composed between 2002 and 2011. The movements, often aphorismic in their briefness, hide associations with various aspects of European music history. Many of them are hommage or in memoriam pieces, or subjective personal messages to friends, colleagues, and beloved family members - and thereby to all music-loving people. This publication is printed on high quality, durable paper made from renewable raw materials in an environmentally friendly way.

In his Organ Symphony No. 8 'In Memoriam', following an idea of the cathedral organist Silvius von Kessel from Erfurt (and dedicatee of the work), Enjott Schneider carries on where Anton Bruckner left off, processes themes from the latter's Symphony No. 8 variatively and contrasts it to 'Haus-Choral des Erfurter Doms', 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme'. Bruckner's material is used as a starting point and further developed by Schneider in four movements: typically enough, the initial movement is called 'Metamorphosen' before an almost eerie atmosphere is created in a 'Scherzo sinistro'. The twelve-note series (in the third movement), embedded in a transcendental mood, eventually develops into the chorale which, now as main theme of the finale, amalgamates with Bruckner's stylistic moments and leads to a magnificent end - an exciting and rousing piece of music.

Commissioned by violinist Jennifer Koh as part of her Limitless recital project collaborating with composer-performers, Tyshawn Sorey's In Memoriam Muhal Richard Abrams for violin and glockenspiel is itself dedicated to the memory of another composer-performer, the titular pianist and cofounder of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. The music of Sorey's friend and mentor, in particular Abrams' large-scale piano piece Young at Heart, taught the younger composer to recognize the boundary between improvised and notated music as irrelevant, in certain ways, to the kinds of music Sorey wanted to make.
In Memoriam Muhal Richard Abrams, whose complex rhythms unfold slowly over the course of seven minutes, was premiered by Koh and Sorey at Brooklyn's National Sawdust venue in March of 2018. This score (two copies required for performance) is presented in landscape format.

Kai Nieminen (1953-) has always sought inspiration for his compositions from natural phenomena, literature, and pictoral art. The memory of the ruthless winter of composer's childhood in the Finnish Lapland and Winterwinde, a painting by Paul Klee (1879-1940), are ingredients that gave inspiration to the piano trio In der Winterzeit... (in memoriam Paul Klee). The work was composed in 2004 as a version for oboe, violoncello, and piano, and it was premiered same year in Weimar. However, the composer was never satisfied with this combination of instruments. Years later Nieminen at the request from Trio la Rue substitued oboe with violin for a better balance. Trio la Rue premiered the revised version in April 2012. They are also dedicatees of this version.

This most frequently played orchestral work by Aribert Reimann quotes from and makes use of Robert Schumann's last finished composition, the so-called 'Geistervariationen' [Ghost Variations] in E flat major for piano from 1854, composed shortly before Schumann's suicide attempt. Reflecting on Schumann's subsequent life in Endenich, Reimann leaves the lyrical character of the original unchanged. But the breaking up of the theme into the third, fifth and seventh fragments symbolizes the transition from dreamy imagination to sickly brooding.

Daniel Schnyder wrote this piece in memory of the cellist Daniel Pezzotti, who died at the age of 55 fighting a vicious illness. The music is loosely based on the first line of J.S. Bach’s cantata “Komm susser Tod” and reflects on the ever changing tune of life, a tune that can suddenly deviate from what we expect it to be.
