With its tonal language of subjective avowal, the first of Beethoven's two masses opens up new worlds of expression for the liturgical texts of the Mass which are expressly modern and point towards the future. Not to be considered a preliminary work to the Missa solemnis, it is an entirely independent work which set standards for the further development of settings of the Mass in the 19th century. Its newness, of which the composer himself was fully aware (I do not speak gladly of my Mass, or of myself, but I do believe that I have treated the text in a manner in which only few have treated it.), paves a way to an hitherto unknown, contemporary avenue to faith which today is still current. Carus presents this important work of church music history in a new critical edition by the Beethoven expert Ernst Herttrich. Score available separately - see item CA.4068800.

The Mass in B flat major by Joseph Haydn is known under the name âTheresienmesse.â The reason for this epithet has to this day not been clarified, but it could have to do with a performance of this Mass in Vienna in May 1800, probably in the presence of the Empress Marie Therese. Compared with Haydnâs last two masses and the large oratorios, the relatively modest orchestral scoring of the Theresienmesse is notable (for two clarinets, two trumpets with timpani, strings and organ continuo). Thus the Mass is also easily performable in those churches where music programs have only modest means at their disposal - and at the same they can have this treasure from the late Viennese classical period. One of his later works, Haydnâs Missa in tempore belli, composed in 1796, is also referred to as the âPaukenmesseâ (Kettledrum Mass) through the use of timpani in the Agnus Dei. For the Vienna premiere, Haydn added flutes, clarinets and horns to the score, so that in terms of sound the soloists and the chorus have to hold their own against a truly large orchestral apparatus. In this case, practicing with the Carus Choir Coach is of course recommended for a good vocal presence. The Carus Choir Coach offers choir singers the unique opportunity to study and learn their own, individual choral parts within the context of the sound of the entire choir and orchestra. For every vocal range a download containing each choir part is available. The Carus Choir Coach is based on recorded interpretations by renowned artists who have performed the work from carefully prepared Carus Urtext editions. Each choir part is presented in three different versions:Original recordingCoach: each part is accompanied by the piano, with the original recording sounding in the backgroundCoach in slow mode: the tempo of the coach slows down to 70% of the original version â through this reduction passages can be learned more effectively.Performers: Ann Hoyt (soprano), Kirsten Sollek (alto), Daniel Neer (tenore), Richard Lippold (basso) â Trinity Church Choir, Rebel Baroque Orchestra â J. Bach's B minor Mass is among the greatest and most ambitious works of all time. The various stages of composition of the Mass occupied the composer for over two decades: beginning with the Sanctus (1724), by way of the Missa of 1733, to the remaining movements of the Ordinary, which were composed during his last years. Thus the Mass, in its wealth of forms with arias, duets, as well as concertante and fugal choruses, displays the essence of Bach's skill and personal style. The greatest musical work of art of all times and all peoples (to quote the enthusiastic Hans Georg Nageli, who first edited the Mass in 1818) and one of the most demanding choral works in the repertoire is presented by Frieder Bernius, the Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Barockorchester Stuttgart in a stellar recording based on the principles of historical performance practice (Carus 83.211). Next to the Stabat Mater, the Petite Messe solennelle of 1863 is Rossini's second extensive sacred composition. Ostensibly, the work was an occasional piece, written for the dedication of a private chapel for the once well-to-do Parisian nobility. This explains the reduced instrumental accompaniment for two pianos and harmonium. Of course this instrumental garb, reminiscent of decent, elevated salon music, produces an unmistakable timbre which through its typical Rossini rhythm obtains an additional flair. For the new editions of the great Schubert Masses the editors have once again thoroughly and subtly reexamined the source material. This has resulted in historical-critical Urtext editons which differ from previous editions in many passages: these are major differences but many obvious details, especially dynamic and articulation are corrected (which has been a trouble spot in the Schubert Edition). The scholarly editions present the musical text in a manner which furthers historically informed performance practice. Score available separately - see item CA.4066000.
