The opening of this three-movement work features an initial appearance of the thematic material that returns in various guises later on in the work. The leitmotiv centres on a minor second. A range of thematic variations is heard in the lively and energetic Metamorphosis One. This movement is interrupted by an atmospheric meno mosso, containing melodic passages that return to the opening theme.Metamorhosis Two is characterised by various changes in tempo and musical character. Seven different soloists transform the thematic material each in their own way. This eventually culminates in a passionate tutti passage. The source of inspiration for Metamorphosis Three is the so-called BACH-motif, a musical autograph consisting of the notes B flat, A, C and B. This distinctive motif arises from the leitmotiv (here a descending minor second), which continuesto evolve through various transpositions and transformations. For the composer, this spectacular last movement is an homage to one of the greatest and most influential composers in the history of music: Johann Sebastian Bach.An impressive contest piece commissioned by Brass Band Schoonhoven, performed at the 2014 European Brass Band Championships.

The title Metamorphosis is on the one hand a metaphor for the development of the body and soul into a mature personality, and on the other hand it describes a musical transformation - a journey through musical styles and genres. Musiciansplaying this piece, which includes improvisational sections, also experience a transformation and development in themselves. Symphonic Metamorphosis was commissioned by the Sierra Vista High School Symphonic Band, Las Vegas (NV). The composer was given free hand to choose the style of the new commission and originally planned to use the opportunity to fulfil a long-held ambition to write a set of variations on the famous chorale from Saint-Saens' Third Symphony (Organ); in beginning work he was so moved by the work's highlights that he decided to include more than just the chorale melody. Therefore, while Symphonic Metamorphosis starts out as an original set of variations for concert band, it is gradually subsumed by other elements in the symphony (particularly the slow movement), and the piece closes with a finale that has been reorganized and rescored from the majestic closing pages of the symphony.

Published in 2014, the Chrysalides for piano by Patrick Burgan (born in 1960) are the product of a commission by the Epinal International Piano Competition, which included the ten-minute piece in the programme of its March 2015 edition. The initially somewhat enigmatic tagline of these Chrysalides, which translates as ?imaginal variations for piano? is, in fact, an organistic metaphor, the chrysalid being the intermediary stage between the caterpillar and the butterfly?s final form, the imago. Following the path of this metamorphosis, Burgan?s imaginal variations start with chaos (pre-birth) and undergo all the evolutionary stages, which gradually clarify the image of the theme ? the imago, whose calm, appeased and completed form we only discover at the very end. The listener perceives an inversed theme and variations in terms of structure, but is also faced with the poetical evocation of a birth. Revealing the secrets of the metamorphosis through a musical language highly charged with sensuality, this piece is a celebration of life..

A Chorale arranged for 15 Instruments. Full Score for ensemble.Bach's Befichl du deine Wege is a chorale setting (BWV 272), which Hans Abrahamsen has arranged for fifteen instruments. In Hans Albrahamsen's adaptation Bachs chorale gradually ernerges from two melodic fragments, both borrowed from the Danish composer Poul Ruders' Four Dances in One Movernent'. In fact both fragments are taken from the last three bars of Ruders' composition. One of Ruders' small melodies is descending, the other is ascending. The metamorphosis from Ruders to Bach can be accomplished because both of Ruders' melodic fragments are in fact 'hidden' among the parts of this Bach choraleinasmuch as the composer has transposed it into B minor. In the first verse we hear only the descending Ruders melody. In the secend verse Ruders' second, ascending and chrornatically coloured melody is added. In the subsequent verses more and more melodies are added. Thus the piece begins with Poul Ruders' melodic fragment in the foreground. In the course of the next verse Ruders' material gradually recedes into the background, and permits Bachs face to ernerge with increasing clarty in the foreground. The piece is dedicated to Poul Ruders. - Thomas MichelsenArrangement

The butterfly is a powerful metaphor of second chances, rebirth, and metamorphosis. The butterfly, seemingly so delicate and fragile, actually migrates thousands of miles, and is thus a symbol of tenacity and resilience. Composer Ruth Brittin brings us a wonderfully thoughtful and poignant new work for String Orchestra.

Inspired by Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals, this work depicts many of the insects we know and love using interesting effects like tapping small sticks. Bands may like to perform the Carnival as a complete suite or to play individual movements on their own.Carnival of the Insects was commissioned by the National School Band Association and was first performed at the Scottish Festival organized by NSBA and Brian Duguid of West Lothian Arts on May 12, 2001. The music letters SBA were used to form the basis of the melodies to personalize the piece for the Association. (S can be Eb, B can be Bb using European note names.) The Carnival is inspired by Saint Saens Carnival of the Animals and derives a lot of the rhythmic structures from it. March of the Ants - The Thin Black Line The composer was reminded of a French holiday when a line of ants would march every night from the gate of the house, past the pool and up into the garden. Crickets and stick insects Here the composer remembered balmy Mediterranean nights and the sound of crickets. An interesting effect is to have small groups of players around the performance venue randomly tapping small sticks throughout this movement. Insectivores These are the creatures which eat insects and the music has a dramatic scary feel to it with a chase in the middle. Metamorphosis This is where the caterpillar changes into a butterfly. The Euphonium melody will strike the listener as being very similar to The Elephant. The Bug Parade This is a grand finales where we can imagine many of the insects in a Disney-like parade. Bands may like to perform the Carnival as a complete suite or to play individual movements on their own.
