The purpose of this book is to describe the function of military music in the musical life of Hungary in a historical context. With this historical account, it can contribute to the general wind music history revealing the details of band music in that culture. The study analyzes the music of the Hungarian Permanent Army from the early eighteenth century until the middle of the twentieth century. The musical development from the instruments of tunesters is described from the oboists, harmonie, and the seminal appearance of wind band as we know it today. Through the biographical sketches of conductors, descriptions of instruments used in various instrumentations, the role of theuniform unique to each band, and programs of the performed music, the study also describes the function of band music in the cultural life of Hungarian cities during this particular period. This descriptive study is an account of 200 years of Hungarian military music. László Marosi was born in Sárvár, Hungary. He studied conducting at the Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest, with Tamás Breitner. From 1982 to 1997 he was conductor of the Hungarian Central Army Wind Orchestra and recorded several works by Franz Liszt and contemporary Hungarian composers such as Kamilló Lendvay, Frigyes Hidas, László Dubrovay, Iván Patachich, János Decsényi, István Láng, and György Ránki.Following his professional career in Hungary, he earned a MM in conducting and a PhD in music education at Florida State University with James Croft and Philip Spurgeon. He frequently conducted the University Symphony Orchestra, including acclaimed performances of the music of Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and Shulamit Ran. As Visiting Professor, Dr. Marosi served as Associate Conductor of the FSU Wind Orchestra during the 2002/2003 academic year.

Visit 2013 Midwest Clinic Page 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of the passing of Dizzy Gillespie, a master entertainer and one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. This book celebrates the relationship and influence Dizzy had with Arturo and his family. Through amazing photographs and stories, this book tracks the remarkable story of how the two met in Cuba during a very restrictive period and the eventual role Dizzy would play in Arturo’s flight to freedom. It also recounts the modest start and parallels that exist between the two musicians as well as their career developments. Throughout his career Dizzy Gillespie faced a huge challenge to achieve success as a black man born in the South with limited education. He endured the hardship of the Great Depression as well as the humiliation and restrictions of the deep-rooted racism and segregation of the time. Decades later, Arturo Sandoval suffered his own bonds of tyranny when he was forbidden the freedom to perform the music he loved. While serving his three years of obligatory military service in Cuba, he was jailed for three months for listening to the “Voice of America†program hosted by Willis Conover on a short wave radio. Both Dizzy and Arturo were angered and demoralized by their individual circumstances, yet both found ways to persevere no matter the political or social consequences of the times. One does not have to look far to realize the level of affection that quickly grew between Dizzy Gillespie and Arturo Sandoval. Their relationship was not only one of mentor-proteÌgeÌ, but also a father-son type of kinship. Dizzy never had a son until he met Arturo. In Arturo’s words, were it not for Dizzy “ maybe I would have ended up in jail, or worse, because nothing good could have happened to me if I stayed there.†One of Dizzy’s greatest achievements and contributions to music was not only the discovery, but the encouragement and promotion of Arturo Sandoval. Arturo Sandoval's life was the subject of the film For Love or Country.

Dyson's sumptuous choral epic of 1938, subtitled 'A Cycle of Poems', charts man's journey through life and the afterlife, using a collage of English poems. Quo Vadis is a work that, in its aim, design and achievement, reaches for visionary heights. Right from the start, Dyson's harmonic language and skilful orchestration are completely at the service of his beautiful and carefully crafted libretto. The composer fervently believed in the English choral movement's need for practical, tuneful and lively music. Quo Vadis, with its colourful orchestration and fine melodies, demonstrates the effectiveness of this aestheticapproach. Arranged for SATB Chorus and Orchestra, this major, yet often overlooked piece lasts about 90 minutes in 9 movements.
Sir George Dyson was a well-known English musician and composer of the 20th century. His compositions include a symphony in G major, a violin concerto, and a number of other works, many of them for choir. Apart from his musical career,Dyson was involved with the military during WWI - his handbook on grenade-fighting techniques became the standard Army text for many years.

Leo Janácek (1854-1928) wrote a large portion of his most distinctive music late in life, following the success of a revised version of his opera Jenufa in 1916. His extensive research of the national folklore had a great impact on his work as a composer. Inspired by a military band performance in a park, the Sinfonietta opens with a military-style fanfare for brass and percussion. It received its commission from a Czech gymnastics association to celebrate the Eighth National Sokol Rally which took place in Prague in the summer of 1926. The Czech Philharmonic gave the first performance on June 26th of that year under the direction of Vaclav Talich. The inner movements provide contrasting melodic and rhythmic material, characterized by rhythmic shifts, abrupt mood changes, and fragments of folk dance. The final movement climbs through a long, intensifying sequence to reprise the opening music, now taken up by the full orchestra. Queen Cleopatra ruled Egypt for over 20 years. She is one of antiquity’s best-known women, in particular because of her relationships with Julius Caesar and, above all, Mark-Anthony, but also because the cause of her death remainsa mystery. The work is split into three parts and performed without breaks. The first section begins with a bright introduction representing Mark-Anthony. Dynamic in nature and reminiscent of military music, this characterises theRoman general. But soon after, another theme emerges, softer and more melodic, symbolising Cleopatra’s femininity. The two characters then combine on a faster tempo. The middle section of the work depicts the love thatMark-Anthony and Cleopatra feel for each other. This passionate relationship lasted ten years and produced three children. This is expressed by a warm and intense theme, just like the beauty of the Egyptian queen. The third andlast section opens in a determined and military mood. Mark-Anthony and Cleopatra were often apart, the Roman general was often away on a campaign. They met up in Alexandria to celebrate their triumph. But, as the targets of thejealousy and ambition of Octavius, Julius Caesar’s son, the lovers are trapped and await the inevitable conquest of Egypt by the Romans. When Mark-Anthony heard the false news that Cleopatra had committed suicide, he ended his ownlife. The Queen of Egypt, for her part, was imprisoned shortly afterwards. The two lovers remain one of History’s most famous couples. This piece was commissioned by the Wind Orchestra of the town of Antony, near Paris, directedby Philippe Rossignol, to mark its 90th anniversary.

Marche fatale is an incautiously daring escapade that may annoy the fans of my compositions more than my earlier works, many of which have prevailed only after scandals at their world premieres. My Marche fatale has, though, little stylistically to do with my previous compositional path; it presents itself without restraint, if not as a regression, then still as a recourse to those empty phrases to which modern civilization still clings in its daily utility music, whereas music in the 20th and 21st centuries has long since advanced to new, unfamiliar soundscapes and expressive possibilities. The key term is banality. As creators we despise it, we try to avoid it - though we are not safe from the cheap banal even within new aesthetic achievements. Many composers have incidentally accepted the banal. Mozart wrote Ein musikalischer Spass [A Musical Jape], a deliberately amateurishly miscarried sextet. Beethoven's Bagatellen op. 119 were rejected by the publisher on the grounds that few will believe that this minor work is by the famous Beethoven. Mauricio Kagel wrote, tongue in cheek, so to speak, Marsche, um den Sieg zu verfehlen [Marches for being Unvictorious], Ligeti wrote Hungarian Rock; in his Circus Polka Stravinsky quoted and distorted the famous, all too popular Schubert military march, composed at the time for piano duet. I myself do not know, though, whether I ought to rank my Marche fatale alongside these examples: I accept the humor in daily life, the more so as this daily life for some of us is not otherwise to be borne. In music, I mistrust it, considering myself all the closer to the profounder idea of cheerfulness having little to do with humor. However: Isn't a march with its compelling claim to a collectively martial or festive mood absurd, a priori? Is it even music at all? Can one march and at the same time listen? Eventually, I resolved to take the absurd seriously - perhaps bitterly seriously - as a debunking emblem of our civilization that is standing on the brink. The way - seemingly unstoppable - into the black hole of all debilitating demons: that can become serene. My old request of myself and my music-creating surroundings is to write a non-music, whence the familiar concept of music is repeatedly re-defined anew and differently, so that derailed here - perhaps? - in a treacherous way, the concert hall becomes the place of mind-opening adventures instead of a refuge in illusory security. How could that happen? The rest is - thinking.(Helmut Lachenmann, 2017)CD (Version for Piano):Nicolas Hodges CD Wergo WER 7393 2 Bibliography:Ich bin nicht ,,pietistisch verformt. Offenbach (1819 - 1880), who was born in Germany, moved to Paris when he was a teenage boy and remained there for much of his life. He became especially famous as a composer of numerous operettas. and of one famous opera: Les Contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann). His operettas (or ‘musiquettes’) were often based on comical, or satirical librettos. He makes fun of Parisian daily life, dignitaries, the military, the pretentiousness of the Grand Opéra, and so on. In that respect, Offenbach’s operettas are not really comparable with those of his German-speaking contemporaries, for example, Franz Lehár and Johann Strauss the Younger. Musically speaking, we could callOffenbach’s operettas lively, funny, melodious and catchy. For La Belle Hélène, Offenbach drew from Greek mythology. The story is based on that of Helen of Troy, but is set in France, halfway through the 19th century; it has been turned into a satire on the élite of that time. The overture to La Belle Hélène was (and still is) very successful. Offenbach combined a number of arias and choruses from the operetta to give a taste of what is to follow. Many overtures which follow this form lack unity and structure. However, in this case the composition has been well thought-out.

Personal stories from two generations of servicemen led to this charming and unique trumpet trio. Written in honor of the composer's grandfather, this setting represents the atmosphere in the barracks after hours when the soldiers aren't quite as gung-ho as usual. Unfortunately, inspections can happen without warning, and the troops quickly assemble, clean up their bunks, and display their staunch military discipline - until the officer leaves, and life can return to normal. With just minor tempo adjustments, this delightful piece is effective for players and audiences of all ages. A great, light-hearted bit of fun for your next concert!

As part of the year 2023, dedicated to Swiss composers, the Swiss Wind Band Association has commissioned Gauthier Dupertuis to write a new orchestration of the Overture in E-flat major by Stephan Jaeggi. Indeed, an update of the instrumentation was necessary for the interpretation of this work with modern orchestras. Therefore, the orchestration that Gauthier Dupertuis proposes and which he wanted to be faithful to the original while meeting current standards, will allow todayÂ’s orchestras to perform this piece of classical-romantic inspiration. Stephan Jaeggi was a Swiss composer and conductor who was born into a large family in Fulenbach (Canton of Solothurn) in 1903. He began playing the clarinet at the age of 13, then studied music at the Basel Conservatory and attended his military training with the Swiss Army Band. Thereafter, he became the conductor of several wind orchestras. In this role, and also that of a composer, Stephan Jaeggi went on to achieve great success. His early death in 1957 put a premature end to Stephan Jaeggi's creative life. All the more reason why his work lives on with unbroken power to this day.

Britannia was written in 1994 as a celebration of a major force in our musical life, the British orchestra. The work fulfils a commission from British Telecommunications plc with the Association of British Orchestras as part of the BT Celebration Series, and provides all the major UK orchestras with a new concert overture for performance in the 1994/95 season. Britannia is a ten-minute orchestral fantasy based on patriotic themes. There is no programme of story as such but the tapestry ofpopular melodies and resonant allusions, given their new and unfamiliar contexts, may provoke some surprising scenarios in the mind of the listener, particularly at a time when petty chauvinism threatens to rear up once again throughout Europe. The piece grows outof a short sketch written earlier this year, Memoire Imperiale, which is based on a march tune by General Reid, an 18th century British army officer who established the music department at Edinburgh University. This theme and the imperial themes of Elgar andArne are thrown into a volatile concoction with other materials an Irish reel (which becomes a jig), a Cockney drinking song, other march tunes and a hazy Celtic modality. All the main ideas are presented in a quick and stark succession during the fast opening section. The slow middle part begins with aserene canon which is gradually undermined by military allusions on brass and percussion. This confrontation leads to the works climax followed by an unsettled coda. Britannia is dedicated to Libby MacNamara of the Association of British Orchestras.
