Ernest Tomlinson always enjoyed the music of the English 18th century composer, Thomas Arne, and felt that his music was unjustly neglected. In the early 1950s he made an orchestral suite using keyboard pieces by Arne which he called A Georgian Suite. Later, he was asked by one of his publishers to produce some background music in the Georgian style and he composed a suite which he called Georgian Miniatures. (He also later composed an individual orchestral piece called A Georgian Miniature just to add to the confusion!) When his daughter, Hilary, asked him if he had any suitable pieces that could be arranged for her flute quartet he immediately thought of his Georgian Miniatures suite and arranged it for her. The suite was first performed at a concert in Settle, Yorkshire, by four flautists from Settle Orchestra, and remains a firm favourite. England enjoys a rich folk song tradition. Composers such as Cecil Sharp and Vaughan Williams rekindled an interest in this heritage at the beginning of the 20th century by arranging numerous songs, some of which were transcribed for the _x001F_first time. Philip Sparke selected three songs from the 18th and 19 century for his Three Folk Song Miniatures: the _x001F_shermanâ??s song Dance to Your Daddy, the love song O Waly, Waly and Bobby Shafto, a song from the northwest of England.

Miniature two, Snow On Christmas Eve is a delicate movement at a slower tempo while Bells On Christmas Morning brings this piece to a joyful conclusion with its bright tempo and melodious holiday spirit.

My fascination with the timbral qualities and myriad colours of the woodwind family was the stimulus that led to the creation of these two short pieces for this combination. Composed a number of years ago, both have been revised in the light of experience gained over the passage of time. Aside from the fanfare-like opening, each Miniature is cast in ternary form. The harmonic language could best be described as neo-tonal but with a chromatic twist (notably in the second). Melodic opportunities are shared consistently between the three instruments, often being extended by imitative interplay or antiphonal exchange (especially in the first). A recurring rhythmic motif in both pieces - a dotted quaver idea in the former and a triplet quaver figure in the latter - helps to bind the texture together. The descriptive titles are intended to convey the underlying character of each: 'The Dancing Doll' should sound bright, breezy and playful, whereas 'The Doleful Doll' is much more introspective and reflective in mood. Finally, the technical and musical demands in the two Miniatures should be within the capabilities of players of intermediate to advanced standard.
