Szymon Godziemba-Trytek, born in Poland in 1988, already is one of the acclaimed choral composers of our time and has been awarded numerous prizes at national and international composition competitions, as e.g. in 2014 for his 'Miserere mei Deus, miserere mei', a musical setting of Psalm 56 for eight-part mixed a-cappella choir. It is the effective antiphony between female and male voices, four-part homophonic passages including four bars for two solo sopranos, rich dynamic nuances, staggered entries of the voices in imitation, and sound elements to be performed in an individual loop-like manner that make this sacred choral work special. For this work, the young composer was awarded the 3rd prize at the Composition Competition Musica Sacra.

Written in 1809, E. T. A. Hoffmanns Miserere remained unprinted and unperformed during the composers lifetime. With its rich contrasts, the work is like a bridge thrown between the musical idiom of his time and the style of the Palestrina school, which Hoffmann so admired. There are a few short five-part a cappella passages that resemble the Palestrina style. Overall, however, the small-segmented structure of the work is definitely noteworthy. None of the twelve movements lasts longer than five minutes. Diary entries confirm the composers inner tension. On 16 January 1809, for example, Hoffmann while working on this piece writes: rather unhealthy state, more like a romantic-religious feeling. With its rich contrasts, E. T. A. The Miserere in C minor ZWV 57 is one of the late works of the Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka, it was the only one to be reprised in Dresden's Hofkirche after his death.
ISBN 9790004214046. 10 x 12.5 inches.
Very Expressive, Please! Jan Dismas Zelenka's musical setting of Psalm 50, Miserere mei Deus, was presumably intended for the 1738 Holy Week. Thus, the composition is situated chronologically between the Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis (1736)* and the Missa votiva (1739), two compositions from the cycle of Zelenka's five late masses, considered the culmination of his sacred-music work. Strong contrasts are a conspicuous stylistic feature of the Miserere c-moll, which Zelenka moderates by embedding them within the entire work's cyclic arch form. The score and parts of this new edition are based on volume 108 of the series Das Erbe deutscher Musik, which was comprehensively revised by Wolfgang Horn in 2018, especially the preface and the critical report. Zelenka's artistic personality, his biography and his compositional style are utterly distinctive. His style is highly experimental. Was Zelenka really one of the greatest composers of the 18th century, or only one of the most interesting? I think that he still has several surprises for us. (Schweizerische Musikzeitung)Zelenka's Masses - fine specimens of Baroque choral literature, some parts of which are set even more colorfully than in the corresponding compositions by Bach. Miserere: Songs of Mercy and Redemption is a sequence of reflections on the theme of mercy, in response to the recent and ongoing tragic conflicts in the Middle East and other regions. Woven around verses selected from Psalm 51, the inspiration for composers from Allegri to Part, the work features an eclectic range of settings of Rumi, St Thomas Aquinas, Isaac Watts, Carol Barratt and Dylan Thomas. Scored for countertenor (or mezzo-soprano), solo cello, mixed chorus, strings, harp and percussion, Miserere: Songs of Mercy and Redemption is a profound meditation on humanity and atonement, from the composer of The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, Requiem, The Peacemakers and Stabat Mater.

At the time Gervais composed his Grand Motet Miserere he held a post as director of the Chappell Royale in the Court of Louis XIV. This was one of the most important positions in music in France at that time. In addition to operas, he was highly regarded for compositions in this representative genre of sacred music until the end of the Ancien Regime. The setting of Psalm 50 consists of a succession of individual movements (choruses, soli, and duets through quartets), which, thanks to his experience with works for the stage, the composer was able shape dramatically not only with respect to the texts of individual movements, but also with a view to the large chorus which concludes the work.

The Miserere is based on the Prelude and Fugue in B-flat minor from the 1st part of the “Well-Tempered Clavier†by Johann Sebastian Bach. In his choral version, Heribert Breuer transposes the original down a third and inserts words from the 51st Psalm, one of the seven penitential psalms.
The composer Heribert Breuer conducts the Berlin Bach Academy, which he founded. He is particularly known for his arrangements of instrumental pieces for diverse ensembles. His choral adaptions (e.g., also in our Choral Collection Beethoven and Bruckner. Secular Choral Music) offer a fresh perspective on the originals and are a valuable addition to the repertoire of any interested choir. The Miserere was recorded by the Calmus Ensemble for the CD “Bach for fiveâ€.

For me, as someone who considers myself far removed from Christian spirituality and closer to the concept of Immanence than to any form of Transcendence, it was obvious to me that I would not compose a Miserere comparable to Alesandro Scarlatti's Lamentazioni. It was also my wish to theatricalise the subject matter, following pagan rituals which appear to have been retained in the monastic Tenebrae services up to Renaissance times. In the series of sequences in which silence plays a prominent role, a path leads to strange rites in which the listeners are invited to stamp their feet on the ground, creating waves of thundering sound, or accompany the chanting of texts. Three sopranos take on an instrumental role, deploying a broad range of vocal sounds from aspirations to screams. Thierry Pecou.

The composer Joseph Martin Kraus was born in the same year as Mozart, and like Salzburg's famous son, he was highly gifted and died too young. But in recent years he has received more attention. And rightly so! The Miserere was composed in 1773 during his student years in Erfurt and is evidence of his technical abilities at the age of just seventeen. Even in this early work Kraus showed himself to be a true exponent of the musical Sturm und Drang movement. For all its youthful carefreeness and originality in terms of compositional technique, the music is characterised by great seriousness and depth of expression, abruptness, and at times also brusqueness.

Zoltán Kodály s unaccompanied mixed choruses first appeared in print in 1943 as a collected volume published by the association Magyar Kórus. This collection contained twenty-five works. In 1951, the volume was released again in the author s edition, being expanded with eight new compositions, but without Els áldozás (First Communion). Reprint editions of this collection had been distributed by Editio Musica Budapest until 1972, when a commemorative extended edition of the mixed choruses was issued, edited by Lajos Bárdos. Until now, reprints of this collection with forty-five compositions have been circulated. Péter Erdei carefully compared the printed edition with themanuscripts of the works preserved at the Kodály Archives. As a result of his work, in 2011 we emended a number of misprints, including those that had been inherited since the earliest print. Seventy-five years after the first release, the time has come for Kodály s collected choral works for mixed voices to appear in a completely new, expanded edition. Our collection contains six compositions that were not included in earlier editions: Jövel, Szentlélek eristen (Come, Holy Spirit), Miatyánk (The Lord s Prayer), Miserere, Salló Pista, Semmit ne bánkódjál (Do Not Grieve), ejesztend t köszönt (A Christmas Carol). In addition, two versions - both equally authentic - are published of the work known under the title of Naphimnusz (Canticle of the Sun), due to earlier editions the new release comes with lyrics in Hebrew and English (Adoration), as well as Dénes Szed s Hungarian translation (Napének [Hymn of the Sun]). This is the most complete and most authentic edition of Kodály s mixed choruses to date it is printed in a slightly larger format than previous editions, and it contains new easily-legible music scores and an informative epilogue. Diese Ausgabe entstand unter der Mitwirkung von Lajos Bárdos.
