The thrills of downhill skiing inspired Carter Pann’s SLALOM, originally a multi-prize winning orchestral work, and well-loved in the composer’s own wind ensemble scoring. This tone poem flashes through sections including First Run, Open Meadow, Champagne Powder, Straight Down, Tuck, and On One Ski, Gyrating.Pann’s program note explains, The work is performed at a severe tempo throughout, showcasing the wind ensemble’s volatility and endurance. The work is presented as a collection of scenes and events one might come by on the slopes. In this way SLALOM shares its programmatic feature with that of Richard Strauss’ Alpine Symphony.Slalomxa0was originally written for orchestra in 1998-99 as a scherzo perpetuo. It was to be a chance to flex my orchestration muscle to a degree I had not yet reached. In 2001 conductor John Lynch was seeking to commission a new work for wind symphony, and we agreed thatxa0Slalomxa0could make an attractive addition to the repertoire. Arranging the piece for wind symphony has proven my most astute compositional act to date.Slalomxa0is a taste of the thrill of downhill skiing. The work is performed at a severe tempo throughout, showcasing the orchestra’s volatility and endurance. The idea for a piece like this came directly out of a wonderful discovery I made several years ago at Steamboat Springs, Colorado, when I embarked on the mountain-base gondola with a cassette player and headphones. At the time I was treating myself to large doses of Shostakovich’sxa0Tenth Symphonyxa0and Rachmaninoff’sxa0Symphonic Dances.xa0The exhilaration of barreling down the Rockies with such music pumping into my ears was overwhelming. After a few years of skiing with some of the greatest repertoire, it occurred to me that I could customize the experience.The work is presented as a collection of scenes and events one might come by on the slopes. The score is peppered with phrase-headings for the different sections such as “First Run”, “Open Meadow, Champagne Powder”, “Straight Down, Tuck” and “On One Ski, Gyrating ” among others. In this way SLALOMxa0shares its programmatic feature with that ofxa0Richard Strauss’xa0Alpine Symphony.xa0The similarities end there, however, forxa0SLALOMxa0lasts ten minutes ... precisely the amount of time I need to get from Storm Peak (the peak of Mt. Werner, Steamboat Springs) to the mountain base, skiing full throttle.

No.42 (In the Alps) could perhaps best be described as a melodrama. It combines many of the subjects that fascinate me: the relationship of text narrative and musical narrative, the history of opera, early cinema, the theatrical practices of the nineteenthcentury, along with the folk and popular music of the Alpine region. A girl (the soprano), stranded on top of an un-climbable mountain peak as a young baby, is taught to sing by the mountain animals. Young Bobli lives in the village far below the un-climbable peak. He was born mute and communicates with the world by playing the trumpet. Bobli hears the soprano's song drifting down into the valley. The soprano listens to Bobli's trumpet tunes blown up to her by the wind. They are both enchanted. The three acts are separated by interludes describing how three animals experience time passing in relation to a musical tempo. Like any self respecting melodrama the text and music combine to depict or imply a wide ranging theatrical adventure, in this piece starting at the Creation (or the big bang), a lonely existence, scenes of rustic village life, some carpentry, many mountain goats, unrequited love, and ending in a quest destined to fail. DUNHUANG FANTASIA is a fascinating 12-minute drama inspired by art from grottoes in the ancient town of Dunhuang in western China. These frescoes preserve images of music and dance scenes, including the postures and attitudes of performers, and of the musical instruments used. Zhou Long’s music begins with a mysterious introduction driven by drum-like textures, followed by a series of episodes, enhanced by captions of the artwork inspiring each section and evocations of the ancient musical instruments.Commissioned and with fingering by Zou Xiang, Dunhuang Fantasia was composed in the fall of 2017. The music was inspired by the art of the Mogaoku grottoes in the ancient town of Dunhuang in western China. The frescoes of the Dunhuang grottos preserve a number of music and dance performance scenes, including images of the postures and attitudes of performers, and of a number of musical instrument types are used.The most popular form of music indigenous to this region is the huar, a folk-song type current among a number of nationalities. The huar is actually a kind of mountain song. Along with huar, Dunhuang pipa qupu (Dunhuang pipa notation) is also an inspiration for elements in this music.The music begins in adagio as a mysterious introduction. The drum-like rhythm patterns beating in the lowest region of the piano, with a muted-string sonority, creates an expanded space to enhance the echoes from the grottos. This is soon followed by the first main section, Cup of Happiness, featuring the huar and Dunhuang pipa melodies along with the dance rhythm. In the next section, Water Drum, the music becomes medium tempo. In the section Dialogue in Presto, the music becomes more active and contrapuntal. The section Tune: Changsha Girl is in a faster tempo as a dance scene. The Coda starts with dense rhythms, and tension is gradually intensified to reach a climax, culminating in a return of the opening section.
