Featuring the concert band’s brass section and an offstage trumpet ensemble, this contemporary work draws its inspiration from the mutation of sound and its transmission throughout the ensemble and performance environment. From a dark and mysterious beginning with muted sounds on all brass instruments, the timbre and sonority slowly mutates through various musical environments. As the brass section mutates to open sounds, the result is a stunning and glorious music statement that transforms the ensemble and audience alike.

Francis KleynjansItâs a beautiful journey through the tones that I offer you with these two pieces. The first The Stations of the Cross express the 14 scenes of the Passion of Christ through a simple arpeggio and 14 different tones. The 12 minor keys which begin the work in a perfectly natural way (D, A, E, B, F#, C#, G#, D#, Bb, F, C, G) are followed by two major keys (D and the) who come conclude the work as a triumphant deliverance. The second piece Labyrinthe uses the same principle, but in a different way. With another arpeggio and major and minor tones which follow one another alternating in a natural way through a slight mutation, leading us astray in the meanders of the tones, to finally find ourselves in the original tone, we thus delivering from this great labyrinth (do, lam, re, sim, mi, do#m, fa#, re#m, ab, fam and do).I hope that the discoverers of these pieces will have the same pleasure that I had in composing them for them.Francis Kleynjans.

Permutations was originally written as a piece for Hampshire Double Reed ensemble  directed by Andrew Knights. They first performed it at a Double Reed Society Day at Trinity College of Music. Later I wrote the clarinet choir version for a wind course in Scotland, & there are also a saxophone ensemble version, and mixed wind ensemble versions. The title 'Permutations' describes a piece in which all the parts are of equal importance, and play together in various different combinations, or 'Permutations'.  The first movement contains some quite dynamic themes, the 2nd is more calm and pensive, but both contain contrasting passages. The 3rd movement - the 'Salsa' is full of exuberance and fun, but with some short contrasting passages in which the various instruments strut their stuff.

Permutations was originally written for the Hampshire Double Reed Ensemble, then directed by Andrew Knights, and it's first performance was at a double reed day at Trinity College of Music. Since then, other versions have been produced as it is effective for several combinations of wind instruments. The title refers to the fact that the various instruments perform with each other in different combinations at different times - in other words, in different permutations. There are also passagess where everyone plays, but the musical themes are passed around, and varied as the piece progresses, and all parts get an equal share of the action. The last movement, the Samba, is supposed to be an enjoyable romp, with light hearted passages for duets and trios amongst the tutti sections.

This edition is the result of Harald Vogel's many years of practice as an organist and musicologist. The music text is based on a reevaluation of 17th- and 18th-century manuscripts containing the free organ and keyboard works by Buxtehude. They originated during a transitional phase between the traditional letter tablature and the staff notation still in use today. Since many works have survived only in transcriptions for staff notation, the editor was confronted with a high error rate, which he carefully analyzes in the Einzelanmerkungen. During the preparation of the edition, the editor always kept sight of the performance practice, but still, the image of the sources is never distorted (e. g. by superfluous rests, beaming not conforming to the sources and the unhistorical adjustment of time signatures) and stays very close to the compositional notation, the letter tablature. The flexible use of three staves and the differentiated distribution of the voices on the staves allow for an approximation in reading conventions of historical notation with its resulting information about hand division. Grouping the free organ repertoire into works with obbligato pedal and works for manuals, this edition is organized in two volumes. The first subvolume (I/1, EB 9304) contains the Preface and the Preludes, whereas the second subvolume (I/2, EB 9305) contains Toccatas, Ostinato works, alternative versions and a comprehensive Critical Commentary (in German only). Volume II (EB 9306) contains Buxtehude's free organ and keyboard works (manualiter) with the corresponding texts (Preface and Critical Commentary).Until 1971, Harald Vogel worked on a dissertation (with Georg von Dadelsen, Hamburg) on Die Fuge um Bach. Besides the description of the inclusion of triple measures into the C notation and the irregularities of the voice mutation in the polyphonic structures, this also included a discussion about the justification of the inner textual criticism. With the inner textual criticism, deviations in parallel passages are unified. The North German fugue style, reaching a peak in Buxtehude's work, is characterized by a constant diversity of details in subject and polyphonic progressions. One of the indicators of the fantastic style is the dissolution of the polyphonic structures at the ends of the fugues, evident in Buxtehude's work.In this edition, a musical text is presented that avoids the uniformity of detail not conforming to the sources. However, there are many examples of transcription and cursory errors, which are analyzed in a methodical systematic manner. About the editor: As an organist, professor, organ expert, and scholar, Harald Vogel has rendered outstanding services to the interpretation of early music and especially to historical performance practice concerning the organ for decades. He has received numerous awards, including an ECHO Klassik as Instrumentalist of the Year (2012), honorary doctorates from Lulea University of Technology (Sweden, 2008) and Oberlin College (USA, 2014), as well as the Buxtehude Prize of the City of Lubeck (2018). Harald Vogel is the author and editor of numerous scholarly publications and editions. Through his lifelong performance practice, he can look back on an extensive discography, including the complete recording of Buxtehude's organ works, which he recorded in various locations with historical organ instruments of the North German organ building tradition in Scandinavia, North Germany and the Netherlands.pure source edition (no mixture of different transmissions) comprehensive commentary (Vol. I/2 & II) (with texts about the sources, chronology, use of keys, liturgic placement as well as detailed critical remarks, incl. music examples (in German only))good page turnsflexible division of voices (on 2 or 3 systems, good legibility)contains facsimiles.

Paul Nitsche's 'Pflege der Kinder- und Jugendstimme', published in two volumes in 1952/1954, has been known to directors of children's choirs and teachers of singing for a long time. Now this standard work is available as a revised new edition in a new design and layout, consisting of the chapters 'Theoretischer Teil' [Theoretical Part] and 'Stimmbildungen am Lied' [Voice Training in Song]. While the first part deals with topics such as 'autonomy of the child's voice', 'breaking of the voice', 'breathing', 'sound generation', 'resonant chambers' and 'hummer', the second part contains a lot of exercises for the practical work with children from primary school age to the breaking of the voice. 'Exercises in song', 'Song vocalises' and 'Syllables for practising in shouting, singing and playing' are just a few examples from the varied material provided for voice training. It is the author's aim to exploit the possibilities of the voice in song without the song becoming a stereotyped and mechanically repeated voice training exercise. What is essential is that the subject matter is 'wrapped up' in the singing or playing activities in such a way that the children do not lose their joy and pleasure in singing.

Thoughts on the composition “Zwischenklänge†with regard to the subject of “home and abroadâ€:- Music that never rests, that is in constant motion and mutation, its tones almost trembling, on the run, in constant tension.- Music that unfolds its beauty in the “in betweenâ€, in the appoggiatura, in the flash-like emergence and disappearance of harmonic colors.- Music as an evolvement of time, waiting, bustling, erupting, or withdrawing. The composition “Zwischenklänge†was awarded tje 11th Composition Prize of Contemporary Sacred Music of the European Church Music Festival Schwäbisch Gmünd. – The premiere was given on 27 August 2012 by Roman Summereder (Vienna).Listen to “Zwischenklänge†on Youtube
