This musical work illustrates the harrowing experience of our hero, Ichabod Crane, as he tries to escape the fate that was cast upon him on that dark and scary night. The introduction also illustrates the unsettling feeling Crane has as he departs into the darkness. Once convinced he is being pursued, he darts forth suddenly on his horse, Gunpowder, and the chase begins. The very last measures of the piece illustrate the moment of impact. The story also suggests that Brom Bones, a character who competed with Crane for the affections of a local maiden, may have been the perpetrator of the horrible prank. Dark Matter – Flute Ensemble (Piccolo, 2 flutes, flute or alto flute, Alto flute, Bass Flute, Contrabass Flute). One of the mysteries of the universe, dark matter is a fascinating concept. To describe it in music I used a combination of minor canons accompanied by a series of contrasting scales which are often octatonic although not exclusively so. This scale some produces surprisingly powerful notes as the shift of a semitone lifts the music through tonal shifts. The central section uses the scale in harmonic progressions that follow a fairly simple melodic idea which takes the listener on a journey into the unknown whilst remaining accessible and memorable. The work leaves the dark matter out there and confirms its existance without making any assumptions or answering any questions. This should be a different voice in a concert, thought provoking and atmospheric without being overly chromatic or challenging.

'I grew up with woods behind my house, and the nocturnal noises and images that I remember were the inspiration for these eight short sound pictures on the theme of night. The music moves first from the tranquility of dusk and evening mists, to the emerging starlight of twilight. As night falls it takes on on a darker quality with shadows and dreams disturbing peace and calm.The night birds and bats swoop and flit past as they seek their prey, but gradually dawn approaches and peaceful sleep is restored. The morning is heralded in the joyful exuberance of the dawn chorus.'.
