Craig Seller Lang (1891-1971) was a British composer, organist and musical pedagogue, who was born in New Zealand. He studied at the Royal College of Music before becoming a teacher at Christ's Hospital School. His compositions were mostly written with a student performer in mind. He is best remembered for his seminal educational Organ books, but he also created prolific volumes of material in both sacred and secular choral genres.

Ferenc Farkas wrote about the origin of the Passacaglia: In 1931, while I was still a student by Ottorino Respighi in Rome, I began to compose a Partita in 4 movements for orchestra, whose third movement should be a Passacaglia. From this work, I only finished the Passacaglia and the Scherzo. In 1968, I took over the Passacaglia and transcribed it for organ without any modification, except the last 6 bars, I partially changed. In the shape of an arch, the work is based on a theme that is repeated thirteen times. Piano initially it evolves in crescendo to a climax in the 33rd bar, then falls gradually to a gently end. We do not know when and for whom Ferenc Farkas wrote this version for 6 clarinets of the Passacaglia.

The Passacaglia is a set of instrumental variations based on an ostinato bass. Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C-minor for organ represents the pinnacle of what had been achieved in this compositional form at that time. In Franco Cesarini’s arrangement for large wind orchestra, the particularly careful interpretation of the original piece enables him to exploit all the sound colors at his disposal, and in this sumptuous guise Bach's work also takes on a grandiose dimension, albeit tinged with late-Romanticism. The exposition of the beautiful theme begins in the bass part, immediately creating a solemn and serious atmosphere which is accentuated by the intensely pathetic character of the first variations. Up to the tenth variation it remains confined to the bass, but in subsequent ones it also passes to the soprano and alto register. The integrity of the theme is also embellished with elegant arpeggios, in whose lower and higher extensions the theme can be distinguished. Towards the end it returns to the bass in an impressive thickening of the polyphonic texture that swiftly re-establishes the key of C-minor. The “Thema fugatum†which follows immediately does not constitute a Fugue in its own right, rather it is nothing but the twenty-first and most extensive variation of the Passacaglia. This time Bach uses only the first half of the theme, superimposing a rhythmic countersubject that considerably enlivens the entire development of the composition. The polyphonic discourse becomes increasingly dense, until the building tension peaks in a powerful “Neapolitan sixth†chord, followed by a sudden pause. This culminating moment then leads to the coda and final cadence on a bright C-major chord.

Lauren Bernofsky’s PASSACAGLIA is in C Minor with an 8-bar recurring theme; although traditional in this regard, the theme’s 8 bars include irregular meter changes and modal harmony, and the successive variations go refreshingly far afield from the original phrase. PASSACAGLIA is also available for Trombone Quintet (4 Tenor, 1 Bass), and for large Brass Ensemble (4 Trumpets, 2 Horns, 2 Tenor Trombones, 1 Bass Trombone, and 1 Tuba).

Robert Saxton 's Passacaglia On The Name John McCabe for Organ. Commissioned by George Vass for a concert in celebration of the life and work of John McCabe CBE. First performed in Faversham Church, Kent, on 28th June 2015 by Edward Kemp-Luck. Duration: 6 mins ca. A review in the June 2016 edition of Organist's Review calls this piece a beautifully produced work that features the pleasing disorientation of false relations and is as inventive as it is impressive. A similarly glowing review in the August-October edtion of The Organ magazine calls this piece a very impressive short work indeed; brilliantly imagines and written for the instrument...one can only urge thismusic on all recital organists - it is a splendid piece, and would surely make a counterpart to an original McCabe organ work in the same programme - the Johannes-Partita , especially.

Passacaglia Variants is inspired by J.S. Bach’s iconic Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582. Composer Sean O’Loughlin brings a wealth of experience to the table. Young musicians will love the fresh take on an older style, and directors will love how much there is to teach in this piece.

(Bernd Genz).

The Passacaglia was a first composition for brass for a young Bernofsky, and an early glimpse of the composer's talent. Dedicated to trombonist Brian Diehl, the opening features, appropriately, a solo trombone in a quiet statement of the theme. Joined by one instrument after another, the ensemble develops a layered exploration to crescendo before the denouement. So captivating was the Passacaglia, that Bernofsky was asked to create versions also for trombone ensemble and for larger brass ensemble.
