“Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer, writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. Pastorales for Cello and Piano was published in 1931 and is made up of six pieces. Martinu himself was a violinist and the beginning of his experiments in composing for solo instruments saw him write for strings. Pastorales for Cello exemplifies the composer's influence of Stravinsky, Debussy neoclassicism, surrealism and jazz. The piece is excitingly virtuosic in its use of double stops, complex rhythms, chromaticism, and ensemble between the Cello and Piano. As a varied, substantial work for the Cello repertoire, Martinu's Pastorales is essential for the advanced performer.â€.

French composer and conductor, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Three Pastorales for Flute Trio in 1964. As with his other wind compositions, Three Pastorales was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille, but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents, Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor, and during the summer, he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However, in 1921, he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes, often incorporating themes of the songs he had learned during the summers with his Grandmother in to his compositions. The Three Pastorales are named; 1) Bolivian, 2) Cretan, and 3) Sicilienne. This Tomasi piece is suitable to an advanced Flute Trio, providing an exciting alternative addition to the ensemble repertoire..

Craig Seller Lang (1891-1971) was a British composer, organist and musical pedagogue, who was born in New Zealand. He studied at the Royal College of Music before becoming a teacher at Christ's Hospital School. His compositions were mostly written with a student performer in mind. He is best remembered for his seminal educational Organ books, but he also created prolific volumes of material in both sacred and secular choral genres.

Zur BearbeitungSeine erste Orgel-Sonate komponierte Guilmant 1874 und widmete sie dem belgischen König Leopold II. Besonderen Anklang fand bereits in der Uraufführung der Mittelsatz der Sonate, die Pastorale. Es handelt sich bei ihr um eine typische Hirtenmusik im 12/8-Takt, bei der die Oboe und Klarinette der Orgel mit lieblichen Melodien korrespondieren. Im Mittelteil tritt noch ein Choral hinzu, der mit den Melodien der Pastorale umspielt wird. Auch die Flöte zählt zu den Instrumenten der Hirten, die in dieser Bearbeitung mit einem weichen Oboen-, Klarinettenregister oder auch einem schönen Flötenregister der Orgel in Dialog treten kann. Da die Originalliteratur des 19. Jahrhunderts für Flöte und Orgel nur dünn besetzt ist, kann die vorliegende Bearbeitung eine willkommene Ergänzung des Repertoires für diese reizvolle Kombination nicht nur zur Weihnachtszeit sein, die leicht zu realisieren ist und Musiker und Publikum in Liturgie und Konzert erfreuen kann.
