Philip Sparke's The Saga Of Haakon The Good for Brass Band. Score and parts. The Saga of Haakon the Good werd geschreven in opdracht van Frei Hornmusikk uit Noorwegen, ter gelegenheid van het samengaan van de twee Kommuner (gemeenten) Frei en Kristiansund op 1 januari 2008. Deze brassband gebruikte het werk bij het Noorse Nationale Brassbandkampioenschap in februari. De compositie is gebaseerd op belangrijke gebeurtenissen in het leven van Haakon de Goede (ca. 920-961), die koning Haakon 1 van Noorwegen werd - THE FUTURE KING. Hij werd opgevoed door koning Adelstein (Athelstan van Engeland) als onderdeel van een vredesovereenkomst die zijn vader had gesloten. De Engelse koning bracht hem de christelijke godsdienst bij. Toen het nieuws kwam dat zijnvader was overleden, kreeg Haakon een aantal schepen met bemanning mee om ten strijde te trekken tegen zijn halfbroer Erik Bloedbijl, die tot koning was uitgeroepen. In Noorwegen aangekomen trok hij noordwaarts - THE JOURNEY TO TRONDHEIM -, waar hij de steun van landeigenaren wist te verkrijgen door ze te beloven dat hij de belastingen die zijn vader hief, zou afschaffen.De zoons van Erik zochten steun bij de Denen, maar ze werden verslagen door Haakon, die slaagde in alles wat hij deed, behalve in zijn pogingen het christendom in het land te introduceren - THE MISSIONARY KING. Hij voelde zich niet opgewassen tegen het verzet dat hij hierin ondervond. Een van zijn beroemdste overwinningen was de slag bij Rastarkalv (dicht bij Frei) - THE BATTLE OF RASTARKALV - in 955. Door tien vaandels ver van elkaar te plaatsen langs een lage bergkam (om de indruk te wekken dat zijn leger groter was dan in werkelijkheid) lukte het hem om Eriks zoons het idee te geven dat zij in de minderheid waren. De Denen vluchtten en het leger van Haakon zegevierde. De genoemde tien vaandels worden weergegeven door tien luide akkoorden vanaf maat 420. Leslie Searle came to Germany in 1965 as a Saxophonist in the Band of the Royal Air Force. He has composed and made arrangements of music by Kurt Edelhagen among others, and has played in numerous bands. This work was written for the Donaueschingen Musiktage of 1926 and given its first performance there together with Paul Hindemith's 'Konzertmusik' and Ernst Toch's 'Spiel' for wind band. Until a few years ago the score was thought to be lost. This first edition reproduces the original Version but it has been carefully extended so that it can be played by the usual combination of Instruments now found in a wind band. The work is suitable for advanced wind bands and those at the highest level, and is one of the first original compositions for this form of ensemble.Hans Gal was born in Vienna where he studied composition and musicology and then taught at the university. From 1929 until 1933 he was Director of the Musikhochschule in Mainz. He then had to return to Vienna and he emigrated to Edinburgh where he was a university lecturer and conductor. Perihelion was commissioned by the Cory Band as their own-choice piece for the 2013 European Brass Band Championships, held in Oslo, Norway. Winning the set piece section of the contest and coming second to Eikanger-Bjorsvik Musikklag with their own choice selection, Cory went on to become European Champions for the fifth time.Cory MD Philip Harper had asked for a 'Concerto for Band' to fully exploit his outstanding band of virtuosi, and composer Philip Sparke created a one-movement work with contiguous sections, first featuring horns and flugel, then trombones followed by cornets and a slower central section for percussion and baritones, euphonium andbasses.The piece is abstract in nature, without a specific programme, and the title merely reflects the fact that the piece was begun on January 2nd 2013, the day of Earth's perihelion - the point in its orbit when it is closest to the sun. It could also be argued that the piece weaves between moments of brilliant optimism and dark shadow, both of which can be the result of bright sunshine. Januar 2013, als Philip Sparke mit dem Schreiben begann, das Perihel der Erde war - der sonnennachste Punkt der Erdumlaufbahn. Man konnte auch sagen, dass sich das Stuck zwischen Momenten strahlenden Optimismus' und dunklen Schatten bewegt, was beides der Wirkung strahlenden Sonnenscheins geschuldet sein kann.

Bertold Hummel's Symphonic Overture was initially part of the Orgeon Symphony. It was then revised as a work in its own right and given the title Symphonic Overture. This work, which lasts about eight minutes, is conceived from one thematic idea. It explores the technical recources as well as the rich tonal colours of the wind band. The European Hymn is the hymn not only of the European Union but of Europe in a broader sense. The melody has been taken from the Ninth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven from 1823.In the last movement of this symphony Beethoven set music to the 'Ode to Joy' by Friedrich von Schiller from 1785.
