John Barnes Chance composed his landmark work for band, Incantation and Dance, in 1960 while in residence at the high school in Greensboro, North Carolina. Commissioned by the Union County (NC) Honor Band, Prelude and Pursuit pays tribute to this important composition and its North Carolina connection. A haunting chant-like theme played by the clarinets sets the tone for the slow section. Similar to Chance's work, the fast section begins with percussion instruments introducing thematic elements later picked up and developed by the winds. Intensifying rhythmic elements, as well as carefully controlled random playing effects, contribute to an overall sense of excitement and anticipation. Themes are woven throughout various sections of the band before the opening chant motif makes a brief dramatic appearance near the end. A great teaching tool for young players, Prelude and Pursuit also provides a rewarding performance experience. Dur: 4:50.

Zodiac Dances was commissioned by the Izumiotsu City Band, Osaka, Japan to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Sparke had previously written the piece, Prelude to a Celebration for the band, and in composing a new piece for their 50th anniversary wanted to personalise it to reflect the band’s history. He chose to write a set of six dance-miniatures based on the decades following the band’s foundation and the equivalent signs from the Japanese ‘Junishi’. During the piece, all aspects of true musicianship come to the surface. Energetic playing, phrasing, melodic music making, technique and a spectacular finale make this work a perfect test or concertwork! Zodiac Dances werd geschreven in opdracht van de Izumiotsu City Band uit Osaka, Japan, ter gelegenheid van het vijftigjarig bestaan van dit orkest. Eerder al heeft Sparke voor dit orkest Prelude to a Celebration gecomponeerd. Met dit nieuwe werk voor het vijftigjarig bestaan wilde hij de geschiedenis van het orkest weerspiegelen. Hij koos voor een set van zes dansminiaturen, gebaseerd op de decennia na de oprichting, in combinatie met de bijbehorende sterrenbeelden uit de Japanse Junishi. This brand-new series is intended as a guide to the keyboard music of the 16th to 19th centuries for pupils of the piano and the harpsichord, as well as of other early keyboard instruments. Each volume contains pieces by well-known and lesser-known composers from one country or region. Traditional form meets modern melody: Raaf Hekkema's 'Suite' is based on the classical form of Bach's French dance suite with Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Saraband, Minuet, and Gigue. Hekkema gives each movement its own modern character: The Prelude is based on a free melody, like the tradition librement opening of a French suite for lute from the 17th century. In the Allemande, an improvisatory melody develops over an ostinato bass whereas the Courante is a fast, softly swinging movement. The Saraband with multiphonic chords resembles a thoughtful etude, and the Minuet plays with the complexity of three long musical eras. The final dance, the Gigue, turns out to be really 'funky'.

The three sections of this piece need sensitive playing from the player, as each section highlights a different aspect of the oboe's character. The Prelude is serious and brooding in a minor key. The interlude is lighter, with beautiful flowing melody, often in canon with the right hand of the piano part. The Dance is lighthearted and entertaining, with almost the character of a folk dance. The piece was composed with an intermediate oboist in mind. The oboe part is very lyrical throughout the piece, and will require good breath control to ensure that the piece 'sings'.
