Sing, Choirs! is a library in miniature. It contains many of the Christian church's popular traditional anthems, including at least one example that will be suitable for each of the major services of the year. A number of Anglican chants (Psalms, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis) are included, set out in a way that should enable those who are unfamiliar with the style to perform them easily. The selection of movements from the Mass can be used to enrich the music of the liturgy in services. Many of the works in Sing, Choirs! are presented in their original form, such as Bruckner's Locus Iste and Mozart's Laudate Dominum . Others are arrangements, adaptations or longer pieces, abridged to bring them into the scope of a useable anthem, including choral arrangements of Handel's Largo , the Ave Marias by Schubert and by Bach and Gounod, and Franck's Panis Angelicus amongst many others. This collection has practicability as a priority. The Organ parts can be played on either the Piano or the Keyboard. Par SCHREKER FRANZ. Franz Schreker was an important representative of the “Wiener Moderne” and one of the most successful opera composers at the beginning of the 20th century. To conclude his studies at the Vienna Conservatory he set Psalm 116 for women’s choir and orchestra [1900] and dedicated to his “beloved teacher Robert Fuchs, in reverence. ” Fuchs, the highly respected composition teacher, was a close friend of Johannes Brahms and a champion of Brahms’s romantic classicism. Thus, Schreker’s psalm setting closely follows the tonal language of Brahms. In 1901 Psalm 116 was first performed in a concert of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, and was first published in the same yearby the Viennese publisher Adolf Robitschek. Psalm 109 (110). Par CARISSIMI GIACOMO. These psalm settings are in the tradition of classical vocal polyphony as practiced in the modified a cappella style of the 17 th century [“stylus gravis”]. Characteristic of this style is the continuo line, which generally doubles the vocal bass, only occasionally functioning independently. Despite its closeness to the tradition of the a-cappella style, Carissimi proves in this psalm to be a master of the artistic expression of words, which characterizes his music in the concertante style.
