Reflections was composed for the Japanese Trombone Quartet Zipang. The composer was so impressed by the quality of the quartet’s ensemble playing, blend and balance that he wanted to write a piece that would exploit these factors to the full. So the work is almost ‘conversational’, with the four players assuming equal roles and separately moving the musical argument forward.

Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song is based on the tune Suiryo-Bushi, which comes from the shamisen tradition and opens with two contrasting statements of the melody followed by several variations each in an own style based uponthe same tune, or sometimes only fragments of it. In one of the variants, the pentatonic scale is used. The final section is in the form of a scherzo, which eventually forms the accompaniment to a final presentation of the folk tune.Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song is gebaseerd op het liedje Suiryo-Bushi, dat afkomstig is uit de shamisen-traditie en opent met twee contrasterende statements van de betreffende melodie, gevolgd door verschillende variatieshierop, in diverse stijlen, steeds gebaseerd op hetzelfde liedje of fragmenten eruit. This music was originally written for string orchestra. In this band version, the key has been changed to Bb major from A major. In my opinion, the music sounds gentler in Bb major. I like to see images that reflect on the water. In this piece you will find the same situation between the melodies in the different parts. Please look carefully at each part and try to find the reflections. Enjoy the dialogue of the phrases.  .This music was originally written for string orchestra. Reflections of Asia captures the feel of the Orient with its pentatonic themes. The oriental flavor is reflected in the percussion writing and use of common percussion toys. The main theme is presented in all voices of the band so everyone gets an opportunity to play this charming melody. This composition offers many teachable moments with its variety of articulations and dynamics. Reflections of Asia is an excellent opportunity to expand the cultural horizons of any young band; a truly impressive work.

Leshnoff has worked closely with violinist Charles Wetherbee (1st violinist with the Carpe Diem String Quartet) on several projects. Wetherbee was soloist for the premiere of Leshnoff's Violin Concerto No. 1 and the Double Concerto for Violin and Viola, as well as in Distant Reflections. In this brief work, solo violin, piano (with percussive chords), and string ensemble are enhanced by an off-stage string quartet. Tension builds slowly to a memorable climactic moment, before subsiding again to stillness. Distant Reflections was recorded by Wetherbee and the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra (Markand Thakar, conducting) on the Naxos American Classics label.

Musical elements from various sources are woven into a rich tapestry of sounds and colors that show the full expressive range of the band. Perfect for contest and festivals! Reflections by Robert Langenfeld, was commissioned by a consortium (alumni/friends/family/UCM Bands/ CTS Pubs) for Dr. Russell Coleman in celebration of his 90th birthday and his service as director of bands at the University of Central Missouri (CMSU) for 32 years. Langenfeld was given guidelines for the composition which included a clarinet soli (Coleman is a clarinetist), excerpts from Dance Prelude (commissioned by Dr. Coleman and the UCM Phi Mu Alpha chapter, written by Claude T. Smith for the CMSU (UCM) Band in 1978), the UCM Alma Mater and the UCM fight song, Go Mules. This work was premiered on June 17, 2018 by the Warrensburg Community Band, under guest conductor, Dr. Anthony Pursell, at the 2018 Missouri Bandmasters Association Summer Convention at Tan-Tar-A in Osage Beach, MO. About the Work Diamond Reflections was composed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. The work progresses from a somber, militaristic intro to a jovial symphonic ending, exploring various ensemble colors along the way. The U.S. Air Force Song is suggested throughout the work by the use of an ascending (and later, descending) minor-third interval, a play on the lyrics Off We Go. The Air Force Hymn, Lord, Guard & Guide, makes a more obvious appearance, namely the trumpet solo at m. 46 and the horn soli at m. 123.  .About the WorkDiamond Reflections was composed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. The sparkling verve and freshness of BLOOMING REFLECTIONS are as strikingly delightful as the imagery evoked by the work’s title. While Nishimura’s imagination leads performers and listeners through a world of metaphorical beauty, her craft gives saxophonists the special opportunity to sound as a dazzling ensemble while playing music that is happily idiomatic to perform. BLOOMING REFLECTIONS is a 7-minute work in three connected movements, perfect for any recital.
