About the Work: Solar Flare began as a piece with two goals: to write a space piece in 7/8 and to write a teaching 7/8 space piece. The piece uses a 2-2-3 pattern, so using this in pre-performance warm-ups might be beneficial. The piece is loosely based on a minor second descending to a minor third. Edward Fairlie's Storm and Urge is a significant work for wind band and portrays a journey of emotional turbulence. The title comes from the German “Sturm und Drang,” a literary and musical movement of the late 1700s which focused on extremes of emotion. Opening with a simple and reflective theme, we are then taken through a range of emotional settings from uncertainty to resistance, and then calm resolve and self-knowledge. With a variety of textures and vivid imagery, this is a masterful work for the contemporary ensemble. Duration: 9:00

Writted to evoke the open spaces, serenity and yet power of the moors, Marsden Moor is based on a motif built from two major seconds a perfect fourth apart. The motif is developed and imitated as the piece progresses, giving a rather solitary feeling to the music. A second theme carries the journey until a sequential progression lifts the music to a dignified but powerful climax. When the music appears to resolve to a more relaxed tonality the second theme carries it off modally to reiterate the power which gradually dies away to leave the landscape intact and silent again.

My music is influenced by all kinds of polyphonic writing - meaning both vocal and instrumental varieties. Recently I have become interested in the ways in which musical forms based on rhythmic processes can enable layering to emerge, so that harmonies and textures coexist rather than resolve. Chamber Concerto , scored for seven players (Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Horn, Piano, Violin, Cello) works with this idea in a piece conceived for the virtuoso musicians of The New Music Players. Although specifically describing the uncertainty of approaching night and an evening prayer, Hymn at Twilight is actually about the human emotions of doubt, insecurity, hope and resolve. This solemn piece opens quietly and introduces a recurring four-note rising figure. Optimism, anxiety and resignation alternate, with the flute taking centre stage. Brass and woodwind take up the chorale. The piece ends in a mood of sanguine optimism.
