From the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, Path to the Pacific reflects the open, airy and picturesque qualities of the American West. These textures are painted through the use of light syncopation, key modulations and triplets that will certainly ch.From the opening driving cello melody to the final ensemble flourish, Path to the Pacific is an exciting and rewarding piece for young players to play. The accents in the cello during the lively introduction at m. 1 are integral to the feel of the melodic line and provide an engaging technical challenge. The AAB form begins as the piece decrescendos to the quiet ‘A’ section at m. 9, featuring violin 1 with a singing, lyrical melody. The robust, joyous ‘B’ section is played with intensity, but still legato. The return to the ‘A’ material at m. 37 features the Cello. The 2nd statement of the ‘B’ material at m. 45 is highlighted by a refreshing tonal shift to the key of E then back to the key of ‘G’ before the crescendo to the fermata in m. 58.The active cello theme from the introduction returns in the A Tempo section at m. 59 at a piano dynamic. This begins the build to the maestoso section at m. 71. Measures 63-70 are the most aggressive bars of the composition. Strive for rhythmic precision when approaching the quintal harmony in m. 63-64, the accented figures in m. 65-67, and the triplet figures in m. 68-69. A rich, resonant tone from the full ensemble will make the maestoso section in m. 71 move powerfully to the final bar.

Second April for S.A.T.B. Chorus and Piano is a four-movement set, based on the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay. Ewazen has long been enamored with her poetry's wonderfully vivid and descriptive imagery of nature and emotions, and its powerful and profound meaning. The final movement, INTO THE GOLDEN VESSEL OF GREAT SONG is an appassionato call to overcome! The poem exhorts us to “sing out” with hope, determination, and strength. The music contrasts turmoil and times of strife with a return to championing the idea of simply overcoming, going forward with hope and determination, with the closing music in major, resonant and strong. .SECOND APRIL for S.A.T.B. Chorus and Piano is a four-movement set, based on the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay. I have long been enamored with the poetry of Millay for its wonderfully vivid and descriptive imagery, and its often powerful and profound meaning. Millay’s descriptions of nature, and of feelings and emotions, have always spoken to me. SECOND APRIL consists of four of her poems, each with a distinctive mood, message, and emotional feel. They are vivid, powerful, and beautiful, inspiring me to capture these descriptions of the various scenes she portrays. Song of a Second April uses music to underlie strong feelings, passions, and the tragedies of life. The poem itself is dramatic, detailing a time of personal strife and tragedy, perhaps the end of a relationship or even the end of a life. The music is intense, fast, in a minor key, and with rapid, spinning notes creating a feeling of powerful, relentless emotions. Melodies, motives, and gestures are tossed between the voices, increasing the feelings of intensity and even desperation. Little by little, the music almost dies away, getting quieter and quieter, creating a feeling of resignation, but with a Picardy Third in the final chord – maybe a bit of hope! Mariposa is a celebration of nature, wandering through a field with white and blue butterflies appearing almost wondrously. But there’s also a profound feeling of poignancy, noting that as one relishes such a beautiful, magical sight, they should embrace the experience – the fleeting, transient nature of such a perfect vision and of life itself. The music portrays the flying of the butterflies: gentle, beautiful, with rich chords and arpeggios, but stepping back, as the fleeting nature of life is the reality, with gentle, but sombre chords interspersed with the magical flight of the Mariposa.Alms is a fast rondo, intense, bold, and always dance-like. It is about both tragedy and resilience. This music is also in minor, yet with moments of playfulness, as a recollection of happy times or moments takes over. This seesaw between emotions is heard throughout the movement, as the music continues to “dance.” And with Millay’s summing up of “reality being what it is,” the piece ends with strength, boldness, and finality. Into the Golden Vessel of Great Song is an appassionato call to overcome! The poem exhorts us to “sing out” with hope, determination, and strength. The music is full of bright and lilting energy; but as the turmoil and times of strife people can sometimes feel or experience, the music becomes intense, dramatic, in a minor key, and with changing rhythms. BUT, there is a return to championing the idea of simply overcoming, going forward with hope and determination, and the music is in major, resonant and strong. .

If you love playing Eric Ewazen’s flute sonatas or horn chamber music, or if you are fan of Brahms’s chamber music, then this exhilarating work is for you! Among Ewazen’s most performed works, the TRIO, inspired by the Brahms horn trio and originally for Violin, Horn, and Piano, has been adapted by the composer for Flute, Horn, and Piano. With a rollicking scherzo and beautiful melodic movements, this 21-minute work is a joy to play and to listen to.I’ve always been fascinated and inspired by chamber works offering several instrumental versions of the same piece, resulting in a new feel and color. One famous example is the great Franck Sonata, originally for violin and piano, and beautifully arranged for flute and piano by Jean-PIerre Rampal. Subsequently other versions of the piece were created for an array of instruments: cello, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, and even tuba! Creating this flute version of my TRIO (flute replacing the original violin part), considered the range, allowing the flute to sometimes sing in a bright, higher register than the original violin part; passages where there were double stops in the violin now have arpeggiated figurations. The original scoring for Horn, Violin, and Piano was commissioned by and gratefully dedicated to Chamberosity, representing an homage to one of my favorite chamber pieces of all time, the Trio for Horn, Violin, and Piano by Brahms. Having both performed (on piano) and analyzed that work, I so loved Brahms’ wonderful weaving of the colors of the instruments, creating an almost orchestral color palette. For years I wanted to write a trio for the same combination, and when my friends in Chamberosity were enthusiastic about me writing that piece for them, I was delighted. The four movements are modeled after the Brahms, with a slow-fast-slow-fast scheme to the entire work. A gentle, somewhat mysterious first movement accumulates depth and momentum as it proceeds, only to return to the gentle world of the opening. The second movement is a rip-roaring scherzo, a true energetic dance with melodies tossed back and forth from the violin to the horn, while the piano provides a resonant accompaniment, inserting its own lively melodies as counterpoint to the violin and horn. The third movement is filled with melancholy, with long lyric melodies appearing sometimes as solos, sometimes as duets, and sometimes as a chorale with all three instruments singing their soulful songs. The final movement, following an austere, dramatic introduction, turns into a grand fugue, with a jumping fugue theme full of life and excitement, culminating in the themes heard in augmentation, strong and bold.
