'Humour plays a role, and my pieces are also an attempt to entertain people.' Words not often associated with contemporary music, but Wilhelm Killmayer wants to place fun and seriousness side by side. Different tonal spheres are found in the 'Impromptu' and the jaunty 'Scherzo lento' which uses tap tones for example. The 'Chorale' that follows allows the music to drift seamlessly into atonality. In the fourth romance 'Im Schumannschen Ton' ('The Schumann Sound'), a diatonic melody is complicated so much that the ending distorts to the beginning, 'just like man combines many different qualities'.In the concluding 'Capriccio', shifting time signatures and dynamic fluctuations are combined in a virtuoso manner. A humourous piece which demands the purest concentration from the players.

Georg Goltermann (1824-1898) left a plethora of works for his instrument, including seven cello concertos which still play an important role in the cello literature of today. In addition, he composed a large number of character pieces, including romances, reveries, nocturnes and serenades. Rooted entirely in the romantic spirit of their time with regard to style, they are relatively short pieces of medium difficulty. It is not least due to its melodic and harmonic catchiness that the rather easy Reverie in G minor Op. 92/2 enjoys great popularity both in lessons and in concerts. The expression marking 'Allegro appassionato' refers to the fundamental character of the piece which demands, in particular, an expressive vibrato rich in modulation.

A work dedicated to cellist Seeli Toivio and composed in 2008-2009. Kyllonen's sense for melody is strongly present: the first Romance is a slow and contemplative Adagio and the second one a Larghetto, which ends with dramatic final chords.

“Musique française†is a series designed for students and teachers as well as professionals. These editions offer masterworks in French music, with performance suggestions and historical and stylistic commentary by noted scholars. The second half of the 19th century saw the growth in popularity of instrumental Romances. These, which one could categorise as morceaux de salon, continued the characteristics of the vocal Romance, which was born in the middle of the Age of Enlightenment and which, at the beginning of the Romantic period, had achieved great success among composers, performers and audience alike.

Goltermann (1824-1898) left a plethora of works for his instrument, including seven cello concertos which sometimes go to the limitsof what was considered to be technically playable in his time. Even today, these works have maintained their importance throughout the methodological progress in literature. Apart from the concertos, Goltermann also composed a large number of character pieces, including romances, reveries, nocturnes and serenades. Stylistically wholly rooted in the Romantic spirit of their time, the pieces are relatively short and of medium difficulty as regards the technical demands. It is not least due to their melodic and harmonic catchiness that they enjoy a lasting popularity both in music lessons and in domestic concerts.

When Ludwig van Beethoven wrote the present two works around 1800, the Romance as a genre designation for a soulful, melodious instrumental piece was anything but established, despite the occasional piece bearing this title. Beethoven himself named the pieces Romance in the autographs, but offered them to Breitkopf & Hartel for publication as Solo. His brother Karl even spoke of 2 Adagios to the publisher. Nevertheless, Beethoven's two Romances for violin achieved lasting popularity ever since the publication of the first editions in 1803 and 1805.The present Urtext edition takes the autographs and first editions as its main sources. The piano reduction and the study score (,,Studien-Edition) are available at G. Program Notes: None But The Lonely Heart is a song from Tchaikovsky's Six Romances, Op. 6 for voice and piano. The song is a setting in Russian translation of Goethe's poem Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt, which has attracted many composers, most famously Franz Schubert. This is my second orchestration of music by Tchaikovsky, the first being Andante Cantabile from his String Quartet No. 1. I tried to make these transcriptions sound as if they had been orchestrated by the composer himself - as is also the case with my transcriptions of music by Rachmaninoff, Janacek, Bizet, and Revueltas. This is my natural tendency, following the spirit ofthe music. Jose Serebrier Comments: Orchestrated from Tchaikovsky's Six Romances, Op. 6, No. 6.

Originally this work was written for horn and piano. In 1849 Schumann turned to a new genre: works for piano and accompanying instrument. He wrote Fantasies and Romances for wind and provided an alternative part for string instruments. Thus Schumann also wrote an alternative part for his Adagio and Allegro op. 70 for Horn and Piano, namely for the cello. Clara Schumann played the new work together with the horn player E. Julius Schlitterlau, writing afterwards in her diary: 'The piece is splendid, fresh and passionate, just as I like it!'.The first edition of this work was published by Phylloscopus Publications in 2015.Former Spartan Press Cat.
