Programnote According to tradition, a mid- or late-19th century instrumental Romance - or Romanza - is a shortish composition of predominantly melodic nature, with a slight leaning toward the sentimental. In several European languages, such as German, French, and Danish, the word for navel, i.e., an unfolding drama in writing, is Roman, and although there's nothing literary about my Six Romances for viola and piano, each piece tells its own story open to individual inner interpretation. Portal forms the opening chapter, so to speak, paving the way for the second movement, named Even Song. Maybe it's just a simple tune heard at sunset, perhaps the melody is carried from faraway, over the hills from inside the village church...Titles such as, Ballad, and Dirge (song of mourning) immediately reveal the nature and mood of the music to come, where-as the concluding piece Duet is slightly more 'mysterious.'In a classic duet the two instruments in question, or more likely voices complement each other benevolently. In the present case, however, the viola and the piano both stand firm, protection their own turf - and - 'the twain shall never meet!'The piece is very short indeed, it just stops, leaving the listener to finish the 'story' in his or her own imagination. A true open ending. Poul Ruders.

Beethoven'sRomancesare performed all over the world, yet how many conductors, performers and listeners are aware that op. 50 which was incidentally composed before op. 40, comes down to us in an unfinished form? The autograph score contains little to no articulation or dynamics and to the present day the work has existed only in highly over-edited publications. The performer has no way of knowing what was originally intended by the composer. Barenreiter's new Urtext edition of opp. 50 and 40 offers the score to op. 50 twice; the first score reflects the state of Beethoven's autograph with editorial markings clearly indicated, the second score has been edited based on other works by Beethoven from that period. This manner of publishing remains true to the sources and at the same time offers musicians a reliable transparent score for performances. In addition to the Urtext solo part, a second solo part with fingering and bowing by Detlef Mahn is also included in the piano reduction.- Piano reduction which includes an Urtext solo part as well as an additional solo part with fingering and bowing- The score to op. 50 available in two versions- Detailed critical commentary (Eng).

Inspired by the French Romantic and Impressionist traditions, my romances for fute and piano, composed during late July and early August 1984, was carefully conceived for the marvelous lyrical and technical gifts of Robert Stallman and Richard Goode, to whom the work is warmly dedicated. All three Romances, although brief in duration, unfold with a sense of large gesture and design. The first Romance is in 3/4 time and flows generally in the manner of a lyrical waltz with occasional turbulent interruptions. The second Romance is in 4/4 time, unfolding in a stately Baroque-like manner, and the third Romance is in 2/4 time, melodically expansive and often tempestuous. All three Romances strive to honor the goals of traditional performance practice while, at the same time, they create an energy and drama of modernity and contemporary richness. And for these goals I am indebted to so many of the most outstanding performers and conductors of our time with whom I have worked and from whom I have learned much– those who have demonstrated the importance of preserving in addition to further developing those significant natural attributes of musical expression and traditional performance practice which are so often ignored in contemporary compositional values. — William Thomas McKinleyFlute & Piano Duration: 14' Composed: 1984 Published by: Notevole Music Publishing.

In his lifetime, Tchaikovsky wrote over 100 short lyrical pieces for voice and piano called Romances. Nearly all of them were published in groups of six. This set is a compilation of six of his finest and most powerful Romances spanning his entire career. Plucked from their original sets, these six have been placed in such and order that they tell an entirely new musical story.

When Ludwig van Beethoven wrote the present two works around 1800, the Romance as a genre designation for a soulful, melodious instrumental piece was anything but established, despite the occasional piece bearing this title. Beethoven himself named the pieces Romance in the autographs, but offered them to Breitkopf & Hartel for publication as Solo. His brother Karl even spoke of 2 Adagios to the publisher. Nevertheless, Beethoven's two Romances for violin achieved lasting popularity ever since the publication of the first editions in 1803 and 1805.The present Urtext edition takes the autographs and first editions as its main sources.

A work that has become a great favourite in choral circles. It was chosen as the obligatory work for the II International Harald Andersen Chamber Choir Competition in 2006, and the text is by one of Kortekangas's favourite authors, D.H. Lawrence. Kortekangas composed the Three Romances for the Dominante Chamber Choir, which has also recorded them. Published in the Chorus series. 1. Cherry Robbers, 2. Green, 3. Old Song.

Luis de Narváez (ca. 1500 - ca. 1550) was a 16th century composer and performer on the vihuela, also notable for being the first composer for vihuela to adapt the contemporary Italian style of lute music. He is best known today for Los seys libros del Delphin, a historically significant collection of polyphonic music for the guitar. Part 3 includes 18 Romances and Villancicos (with voice), plus additional variations. Edited and transcribed for guitar by Emilio Pujol.
