Ce Rondo, qui reprend et développe dans son déroulement un thème du 3e mouvement du quatuor avec piano en sol mineur (K. 478), fut composé dans le voisinage étroit des deux concertos en La majeur (K. 488) et ut mineur (K. 491).

Malgré son étendue considérable et son importance musicale, l??uvre n?a apparemment jamais été éditée du vivant de Mozart. La dédicace aussi, «Pour Mad.selle Charlotte de W?» (le reste est illisible), est énigmatique. Quelle que soit la femme à laquelle pensait Mozart, ce Rondo compte aujourd?hui au nombre de ses ?uvres pour piano les plus appréciées et les plus fréquemment jouées.
