“French composer and conductor, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Gregorian Variations on a Salve Ragina 1964. As with his other wind compositions, Gregorian Variations for Trumpet and String Orchestra and Organ reduction was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille, but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents, Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor, and during the summer, he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However, in 1921, he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes, often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. Gregorian Variations on a Salve Regina is a highly unusual and modern work based on an old Marian Hymn (a song for the Virgin Mary). The variations exploit tonality, rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. This Tomasi piece is suitable for advanced trumpeters, providing an exciting, alternative addition to the instrument's repertoire.â€.

Richard Allain presents a beautifully sombre and gentle setting of the Salve Regina for SSAATTBB chorus. Allain's close harmonies are set across a staggered texture, creating a seamless continuous halo of sound with each syllable melding into the next. The effect is developed as the density of the music builds, allowing each singer a level of metric freedom that allows a series of repeating phrases to blur into an undulating layer of sound against which the lower voices sing. A captivating and hugely atmospheric devout setting.

The lyrical piece features a long introductionfollowed by the Soprano solo and a finale. At the end of the solo, the voices alternate between the initial tempo and some slower parts to arrive to the close and finish in harmony. Pierre Villette (1926-1998) was a Frenchcomposer of choral and instrumental music. Strongly influenced by Catholicism, his musical heritage ran from Fauré to Messiaen.

Some forty settings of the four Marian antiphons by Johann Michael Haydn are extant, among them 17 settings of the Salve Regina. The Salve Regina in B flat MH 90, here published for the first time, dates from about 1765, and it survives in a contemporary manuscript copy at Gottweig in Lower Austria. This early composition by Haydn already bears witness to this talent for setting a liturgical text to music. The dialogue between the bass soloist and the choir gives this work a radiance of its own.

This Salve Regina was originally intended to be accompanied by strings and wind instruments. However, the wind parts merely double the strings and the voices, adding color but not indispensable. In our edition the wind parts are omitted, so that the intimate choral texture is heard to far greater effect, the strings providing it with a sometimes virtuosic frame. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.9101200.

Ferdinand Schubert liked the Salve Regina in F (1815) so much that he asked his brother Franz to compose wind parts for it. The piece was published in 1825 in Vienna by Diabelli with winds instruments under the title Zweytes Offertorium and in 1888 it was included in this version in the old Schubert edition as well as in all other editions published since then. The new Carus includes both versions and it is printed so they may be compared. This offers smaller ensembles an alternative to perform the work without winds and this version also has the added charm of being the original.

Haydn composed his four-movement Salve Regina at Eisenstadt in 1770/71. It is distinguished by its use of the organ as a solo instrument. Here Haydn proves himself a master of the musical setting of the Marian text. Originally written for four solo singers, it may also be performed chorally. Today Monteverdi's Selva morale et spirituale (1641) stands entirely in the shadow of his famous Vespers 1610. The editions from 1610 and 1641 both include music for the Mass and Vespers, but each of these collections was composed under much different circumstances during Monteverdi's lifetime. If the works of 1610 are a bold combination of traditional compositional techniques and avant garde music, which were intended by this weary Court Composer at Mantua as an application portfolio for a new job, the 1641 collection is the only church music by the mature Monteverdi which was published after almost thirty years in his position as Music Director of St. Mark's Cathedral: the latter, a kind of best of collection from his many years of experience as a church musician. In Venice the composer had not only a fabulous, but a large ensemble at his disposal (finally, about 35 singers, alone)! The combination of soloistic and weighty tutti sections makes a big effect in this music, it makes the music, with its clearly defined sections and, for the most part homophonic choral passages more easily performable than the Vespers for today's choirs. The new edition, comprised initially of three volumes, also includes those works from the Selva Morale (a Mass and two Magnificats) which have already been published by Carus, as well as all further liturgical compositions for use in the church. Volume III, Motetti, Salve Regina, Himini, contains compositions for 1 to 3 voices and basso continuo, some with two violins (the psalms are included in both the Salmi I and Salmi II volumes). The edition is based on the methods employed in the much acclaimed Carus edition of the Vespers: * It contains a detailed foreword with suggestions for notation, scoring and for the liturgical use of individual compositions. * For the present edition four of the five surviving printed copies, as well as contemporary manuscript were consulted. Facsimiles illustrate special characteristics of the edtion of 1641. A Critical Report makes clear all of the editorial decisions made in the edition. * All of the pieces are printed untransposed and using the original note values. * All of the pieces are available in single editions with complete performance material. * Vocal scores of all works with obbligato instruments facilitate rehearsal. * Instrumental parts for collaparte accompaniment of tutti-sections (including text underlay).
