Sami's Piece was written for a jazz musician, and should be played with a jazz feel (and a nod to polyrhythmic Balkan folk music). It's an exuberant work, relatively short, but dizzying, full of surprises, musical humor, and changes of atmosphere. It was premiered in 2003 at the Hirzenberg Festival in Zofingen, Switzerland, by the Swiss pianist Samuel Wettstein, to whom the work is dedicated. Performing notes - Attentive use of the pedals to control resonance and legato will prevent blurriness. - When played on an upright piano that is slightly out of tune, the work gains an unexpected charm. - As is customary, accidentals remain valid until the end of the measure in which they appear.

Beaivi is inspired by the Sami poet Nils-Aslak Valkeapaa's poem When that time approaches. where the first encounter with light after the lengthy polar night is described with exceptional significance. The word beaivi comes from the northern Sami language meaning sun or day. The play of light - its dawn, a brief shimmering before darkening again - are characterized throughout the textures and timbres of the piece. Beaivi is dedicated to the Danish chamber music ensemble Lydenskab, who also commissioned the work. When that time approaches I notice how frequently I ski higher than necessary and when I finally see the peaks turn red I am not ashamed to admit that I go to a high place in order to see the sun -Nils-Aslak Valkeapaa English translation by Ralph Salisbury Parts are available: WH32985A.

Ann-Elise Hannikainen (1946-2012) was born in Hanko, Southern Finland, but lived mainly abroad, her father working as diplomat. Her grandfather's father was P.J. Hannikainen, the head of a prominent Finnish musical family. Ann-Elise's attraction to music was first found at age of five, when her family, then living in Warsaw, bought a grand piano. Hannikainen started to study piano playing at the Sibelius Academy in 1967, but rheumatoid arthritis prevented her from pursuing a carrier as a concert pianist. In 1972 she moved to Madrid and started to study composition with Ernesto Halffter Ercriche, a student of Manuel de Falla. Hannikainen advanced quickly in her career, and her piano concerto was premiered in Helsinki Festival in 1976. Her composing style evolved into luminous melodies, free atonal harmonies and improvisatory forms. Hannikainen wrote the two piano pieces Pensamientos 1974 (1974) and Toccata-fantasia (1975) in El Escorial. The first one carries features typical for piano writing of the Late Romantic, whereas the playful and improvisatory Toccata-fantasia gives a neoclassical impression.

Jean Sibelius's Six Songs for Male Choir Op. 18 are published as Urtext with the original Finnish lyrics for the first time in this edition. Most of these stem from the Finnish national epics Kalevala and Kanteletar, but the texts of Sydameni laulu [Song of My Heart] and Metsamiehen laulu [Song of the Woodmen] are from the poet Aleksis Kivi. The individual pieces originated over a couple of years for different choirs and occasions and were only later combined by Sibelius under a common Opus number. Venematka [Boat Trip] originated as early as 1893, Saarellaa palaa [Fire on the Island] was first performed in 1895 and Sortunut aani [The Broken Voice] in 1899. Sydameni laulu was published in the same year together with Metsamiehen laulu, while Terve kuu [Greetings to the Moon] was not composed by Sibelius until 1901. The contents of the collection Op. 18 were subsequently extended, revised and repositioned by Sibelius many times; the final shape with six settings was established in 1930. Four of these settings were also arranged for mixed choir and have already been published as an Urtext edition (CHB 5372). The edition includes translations of the lyrics in German and English as well as an informative preface that is based on volume VII/2 of the complete edition Jean Sibelius Works, just like the score.
