Second SymphonyŸis in four movements. The first movement opens with a scream. The subsequent parts of the movement form a unified but complex whole, where traces from the coming movements turn up - constantly in interaction with the scream and its echoes. The second movement is slow and rather melodious. It was actually performed in a “trailer version†- shortened and minimized in December 2018 in the Danish TV programme 'Deadline'. The third movement is a scherzo - teeming, rhythmic, with almost physical soft and violent meetings, like acts of love between the different layers of music. The last movement is a farewell song - a goodbye. A musical ship is approaching only to disappear again. Where the composer perceives the preceding movements as highly contemporary, there is a touch of the past in this last movement - the composer's past. Sorensen quotes his fourth string quartet 'Schreie und Melancholie', and in this movement he was also influenced by the fact that his mother passed away during the composition of this piece.

Beethoven did not work continuously on this symphony and interrupted his work a couple of times. As the sketches show, he presumably wrote down first ideas in the autumn of 1800.No other autograph material has survived. As Ferdinand Ries, a pupil of Beethoven, bitterly reports, Beethoven gave him the autograph, but it was unfortunately stolen by a friend, out of pure friendship. In April 1803, the composition was premiered publicly, together with the first symphony and the third piano concerto with Beethoven himself as soloist. Although Beethoven's first two symphonies are still influenced by Haydn and Mozart, novelties can already be discovered. The second symphony starts breaking away from traditional forms and lets us surmise the monumentality of Beethoven's innovation. The editor, Armin Raab, critically illuminates the transmission of the work and its sources. He also clears up a wide spread belief in older literature, that this cheerful work might have been composed parallel to the Heiligenstadter Testament. The practical performance material by Breitkopf & Hartel is based on the music text of the New Beethoven Complete Edition and constitutes the authoritative reading of Beethoven research.

The poem “The Resurrection” by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock was set to music by Gustav Mahler in the fifth movement of his Second Symphony, known as the “Resurrection.” The central passage from Mahler's musical adaptation was incorporated into “A Tribute to Mahler,” a composition created in homage to Mahler, 100 years after his death. Powerful brass tones and delicate woodwind melodies alternate in a Mahleresque manner with horn and trumpet signals from a distance. The choir is delicately complemented by the solo alto saxophone. “A Tribute to Mahler” aims to, like a continuation “after a short repose,” offer us a glimpse into the blissful world to which we will all eventually journey.

From Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, this movement is one of the master's most recognizable and performed themes. Recently featured in the Oscar-winning film The King's Speech, here is a skilled and effective adaptation for young bands by Robert Longfield. A great way to showcase the classical period of musical history on any program. Dur: 2:45.

Commissioned by John Storgards, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and Nordic House in the Faroe Islands. Dedicated to the composers daughter Malan. Preface / Programme note: From the Edda verse 31 Three roots there are that three ways run Neath the ash-tree Yggdrasil, Neath the first lives Hel, neath the second the frost-giants, Neath the last are the lands of men. The idea behind the Symphony is the story of Yggdrasil, The Tree of Life, from the Old Norse mythology. The Ash-tree reaches all the way into the sky and has three roots, each growing into three different places. One root grows into the Land of Hel (Hel is the goddess of Hell), called Helheim, another into theLand of Frost-Giants, called Jotunheim, and one root grows into the Land of men, called Asgard. And the Ash-tree reaches into the sky. In the crown of the tree lives a squirrel, which moves fast around the tree and spreads gossip, both between the three roots and between three roots and the crown of the tree. The Edda is a large collection of Old Norse poems, collected in the 12th Century by the Icelandic poet and historian Snorri Sturluson. Despite an impressive body of work, little is known about German composer Emilie Mayer (1812-1883). Mayer studied composition with Carl Loewe after the death of her parents, writing a total of eight symphonies, eight violin sonatas, twelve cello sonatas, six piano trios, seven string quartets, seven orchestral overtures, and numerous works for piano and voice. Mayer's works were acclaimed in Germany and she toured frequently performing her music, an unheard of practice for a single woman at the time. Regrettably, however, most of her work remained unpublished at the time of her death. Written in her 30s, Mayer's stormy fourth and final movement from her second symphony reveals her bold Romantic style and growing confidence as a composer. Arranged for string orchestra and timpani, this movement was painstakingly drawn from the handwritten score, offering a profound opportunity for students to experience the music of this incredible composer for the first time.
