While composing Serenata, Jan Van der Roost didn't focus too much on virtuosity, acrobatics or spectacle. Instead, he wanted to let the solo instrument shine as a melodic and expressive voice. And indeed: the warm sound of the euphonium touches the heart of the audience straight away in the first section with a melodious theme. Then follows a rigaudon, a noble and elegant dance from the Renaissance era. Despite the fact that some of the variations on the main theme require some technique and agility, the overall character mostly remains songful. The composition as a whole builds further on these two musical ingredients, but thanks to a clever alternation of melodic and technical passages, it offers a nice stylistic diversity to the listeners. The band is definitely not 'just accompanying' but fully participates and begins a dialogue with the soloist: both musical partners have their say. The end is more spectacular and sonorous, giving an extra boost of energy to the soloist as well as the band in a grand finale!

The pieces collected in LA FLAUTA ROMANTICA were written by three of the greatest Spanish instrumental virtuosi of their time: the pianists Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados as well as the violinist Pablo de Sarasate. When transcribing their piecesthe aim was to both create convincing chamber music works for flute and to preserve the typical Spanish sound idiom of this music. The CD provides demo tracks as well as the accompaniments of each piece.

In 1918-19, Gian Francesco Malipiero wrote a collection of seven songs, commonly known as Sette Canzoni. They were initially intended as a stand-alone work, but became incredibly popular when they wereincluded as the second act of the composer's opera L'Orfiede. However, in recent years the collection has come to be recognised in its own right as one of the composer's masterpieces.
Like all of the seven songs, the fifth, Serenata, is designed as an individual mini-opera. Scored for a solo Tenor with Piano accompaniment, it tells the story of a young lover serenading his beloved. At the same time, unknown to him, shesits inside lamenting the death of a relative.
Serenata has been translated from the original Italian into French by Henry Prunieres, and into English by Edwin Evans.

Serenata is a first-year band piece with a Latin dance flavor. It is an excellent study in independent part-playing for young bands. Balance is crucial among the following parts:1. Percussion must be steady and not overpowering. The cowbell should be played with a mallet or stick that will prevent its sound from being dominant in the percussion section.2. The bass line will require a delicate staccato articulation.3. Clarinets and horns must play the ostinato beginning at m. 5 in two- or four-measure phrases. This line must always feel unbroken.4. Trumpets must also use a delicate staccato at m. 17. Straight mutes are a nice touch if the section is big enough. Cup mutes are even better. A small trumpet section may play open.5. Flutes and alto saxes should always play legato when carrying the melody. The contrasting middle section, beginning at m. 28, should be articulated smoothly by the whole band. The alternating melodic lines should have tonal contrast, but should be the same dynamically. The bass line should fade into the background at this point.A first-year band can play Serenata for their Spring Concert.Thank you for choosing this selection. I hope you and your students find it instructive and enjoyable.

Thanks to Stefano Grondona, this unknown and unedited transcription by Tárrega in G major of Albéniz' Cádiz, known widely as the Célebre Serenata Española has just been identified in a manuscript copied by Miguel Llobet, probably while he was still Tárrega's pupil. This beautiful and subtle transcription is not overcomplicated to play, Tárrega did not try to do everything, as some later transcribers have attempted to do. The melody sings and the accompaniment is subtly always there. The tuning with 5th string to G, and 6th to D, is no hindrance - on the contrary it is a boon. We are not aware of any published version of this work in G major, and this particular version has never been published until now. We are delighted to make it available for the first time in a new scholarly edition prepared from Llobet's meticulously accurate manuscript, a copy of which is reproduced in the edition.

Einar Englund's (1916-1999) musical language is, in his own words, based on sweeping terms and great symphonic lines. He built his works on themes, clear harmonies and polyphonic thinking. As a composer he was a neo-classicist, whose music based on tonality and included long, compact and even romantic melodic lines side by side with spicy dissonances, energetic rhythm and vigorous orchestration. Serenata for string orchestra (1983) is divided in four movements, including a nostalgic menuetto and an energetic and airy Finale with Bartok-like turns. The overall duration is 20 minutes.
