A look into Kullervo's workshop Jean Sibelius's own piano-vocal scores of the two choral movements from his Kullervo Symphony Op. 7 were forgotten for nearly a century. It was not until 1982 that the manuscripts were transferred from the composer's estate to the Helsinki University Library. They will be printed for the first time in the Complete Edition. They allow scholars a fascinating insight into the revisions that Sibelius made even before the world premiere, and they supplement the new edition of the first text-critical score recently presented by Glenda Dawn Goss within the framework of the Complete Edition. We can see how explosive Kullervo's vocal text must have been in 1892 by the fact that the composer decided to replace the original women's chorus with a male chorus. His teacher Martin Wegelius had advised him to bear in mind that female choral singers might refuse to perform the incestuous seduction scene.

Two Mythical Scenes for orchestra was completed in 1956, when Sallinen was Aarre Merikanto's composition student for his second term. The work received its premiere performance only after a good deal of pressure from Prof. Merikanto's side, and was finally premiered in a concert by the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jussi Jalas. The work received opus number 1, as it was the first publicly performed work by Sallinen. The composer has told that he was inspired by a 1947 book published by the Finnish Literary Society (SKS) Myytillisia kuvia (Mythical Scenes/Images). The second movement of the work, Kalmanvaen joulukirkko (The Christmas Service of the Dead) is based on the stories in which the dead rise from their graves early in the Christmas Day morning to attend their own special ceremony led by a dead priest. The opening movement Kulkue (Procession) depicts the dead in a procession towards the church. In 2020 Sallinen revised the score slightly. In his own words with very small changes helping the sixty years younger and less experienced self. The revisions mostly concerned nuances and dynamics, bowings and some bridges. The original structure, rhythmic and harmonic world is still the same as they were when young Sallinen composed the work in 1956.

The Finnish composer Leevi Madetoja wrote his three symphonies (between 1915 and 1926) in the wake of Sibelius. According to the Gramophone critic Ivan March, you have only to sample the opening movement of the First to discover how compellingly attractive is Madetoja's musical world, if less dark and plangent of his predecessor.

Conversational Solfege is a dynamic and captivating first-through-eighth grade general music program that enables students to become independent musical thinkers with the help of a rich variety of folk and classical music. It is organized around increasingly complex rhythmic and melodic content. Each new rhythmic or melodic element is discovered first in patterns and then reinforced with folk songs, rhymes, and classical examples. Central to the Conversational Solfege program is the use of music harvested from our rich and diverse American musical history. This variety of music serves as a common thread that spans and bonds generations. Each book contains varied song material so the teacher can select appropriate music for the lower grades or older beginners. This 12-step teaching method carefully brings students from readiness to, ultimately, creating music through inner hearing and then transferring their musical thoughts into notation—in other words, to compose music! This CD provides 14 classical selections referenced in Conversational Solfege Level 2. These examples provide reinforcement for emerging literacy skills, and they also enable students to listen to wonderful classical examples with greater attention. Listening to classical music can be challenging for elementary students. With nothing to hang onto, the many notes can be too much to comprehend and attention soon wanes. But with minimal literacy skills, students will have enough musical information to discover that classical music can be accessible and appealing. In the included booklet, timings are given for each selection and the portions of the music that are readable by the students are reproduced. Whether using this CD with Conversational Solfege instructional materials or simply as a resource of classical music with simple to read rhythmic and melodic material, both teachers and students will delight in discovering this wonderful music through literacy. This series is a complete, innovative approach to teaching music that will stay fresh year after year. CONTENTS Conversational Solfege Unit 5: 1. My Concerto for Orchestra (2007) is a twenty-minute work in which different sections of the orchestra, as well as individual solos and duos from within the orchestra, are highlighted as the music unfolds. The work continues my interest in two-movement forms that began with my Cello Concerto (1991), and was later developed in Sortilege (1996) and Symphony (Broken Consort) (2004). In these works, and in the Concerto for Orchestra, each movement is given equal weight and importance with the second developing earlier material and taking it in new directions. The two-movement form of the Concerto for Orchestra derives from a symphonic sonata structure, reshaping the traditional four-movement form and combining this with aspects of sonata form, a tradition that goes back to Liszt, Schoenberg and Sibelius:1st movement (i) exposition of ideas - dramatic and sudden (ii) scherzo and development 1 - resolute2nd movement (iii) adagio - calm and unhurried (iv) development 2 with recapitulation - intense and energeticThe Concerto for Orchestra was commissioned by the Musikalische Akademie des Nationaltheatre-Orchesters Mannheim with the support of Die Landesbank Baden-Wurttemberg for its first two performances on 31st March and 1st April 2008 conducted by Friedemann Layer. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is arguably the best known Negro spiritual in the world; famous as a worship song, a sports anthem, and a popular melody. It was arranged for unaccompanied Male Voice Choir (TTBB) and Baritone solo, with Piano reduction for rehearsal purposes, in 1932.
Sir Granville Bantock (1868-1946) was a British composer, conductor and educator. He channelled his energetic and creative personality into many musical projects, championing the works of Jean Sibelius, founding the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and composing many splendid classical pieces. Viewed by his contemporaries as out-of-date, his music is now beingappreciated as one of the last great contributions from the English Romantic movement.
