This highly acclaimed series provides a real opportunity for woodwind players of mixed ability to play together. It will work with as few or as many players as you like! Each arrangement will work with just three or four main parts. Part 1 is quite demanding but Parts 2 & 3 are easier. These parts can be played by just one or several players - it's up to you! Optional 'filler' parts are also included for beginners. These have very simple rhythms and notes (clarinet parts are all below the break) allowing young players to gain experience in ensemble playing. Mixed Bag gives you a score and double set of parts. Titles include arrangements of classical, romantic, modern and folk tunes. Mixed Bag - the answer for woodwind groups of mixed instrumentation, mixed ability and mixed tastes.

The sarabande originated in the early 17th century and is a stately dance in triple time. It was popular in France and Spain but as a dance it quickly spread throughout the courts of Europe and the style was soon adopted into instrumental music in dance suites for solo instruments as well as orchestra. Something of this style has influenced Simple Sarabande and although its harmonic language is perhaps more up-to-date it could be seen as a ‘period piece’.

Simple Sarabande ist im Stil der ursprünglichen Sarabande, einem würdevollen höfischen Tanz aus dem 17. Jahrhundert im 3/4-Takt, geschrieben, wenn auch Philip Sparke für seine Komposition einen etwas moderneren harmonischen Ausdruck wählte. Einfachheit und leichte fließende Bewegungen sind die Schlüsselworte in diesem Stück, in dem Ihr Blasorchester sich ganz auf die Schönheit von Ton und Phrasierung konzentrieren kann.

La sarabande est une danse au caractère digne, sur un rythme ternaire lent, dont l’origine remonte la première moitié du XVIIe siècle. Très appréciée en France et en Espagne, elle conquiert rapidement l’ensemble des cours européennes. La sarabande s’intègre alors dans la musique instrumentale et devient un mouvement fondamental de la suite de danses. On retrouve quelques éléments stylistiques de cette danse dans Simple Sarabande. La structure harmonique reste néanmoins plus moderne.

Between 1905 and 1934, Gustav Holst was Director of Music at St Paul’s Girls School in Brook Green, London. St Paul’s Suite, written for the school’s string orchestra, was premiered there in 1913 and consists of four movements: an energetic Jig in 6/8 and 9/8, Ostinato, based on a simple 4-note theme, Intermezzo, an energetic and rhythmic dance and Finale, adapted from the Second Suite in F in which Holst brilliantly combines The Dargason and The English Dancing Master, with the traditional melody, Greensleeves.

St. Paul’s Suite, geschreven voor het strijkorkest van de school, werd in 1913 in première gebracht. I have been very fortunate and professionally blessed to have five wonderful woodwind colleagues at Arizona State University: Elizabeth Buck, flute; Christopher Creviston, saxophone; Joshua Gardner, clarinet; Martin Schuring, oboe; and, Robert Spring, clarinet. Together, we presented numerous woodwind recitals featuring all six of us in various combinations of duos, trios, quartets, and quintets. However, until now, we were never able to share the stage simultaneously. To remedy this, I arranged five movements of Stravinsky's Suite No. 1 and Suite No. 2 for Small Orchestra for the instrumentation of the ASU woodwind faculty.
The source material is derived from Igor Stravinsky's Three Easy Pieces (1915) and Five Easy Pieces (1917). These compositions were written as four-hand piano educational pieces for Stravinsky's children. Stravinsky would play the more difficult accompaniments while his children played the simple melodies.
Stravinsky composed arrangements of several movements using these short eight pieces, but the best-known arrangements are Suite No. 1 (1921) and Suite No. 2 (1925) for Small Orchestra. The five dance movements in Suite for Woodwind Sextet are true Stravinsky in their wit, charm, and humor.
