Franz Liszt was barely 20 years old when he first read Dante s Divine Comedy, but it left a lasting impression on him throughout his entire life that only a truly impactful creation can have on the human soul. This is what inspired the Dante Sonata which Liszt premiered in Vienna in 1837. Stemming from this, he created a revised version entitled Apres une lecture du Dante, Fantasia quasi Sonata which appeared in 1856 within the second cycle of his Années de pelerinage (Years of Pilgrimage). In the appendix of the present edition, the work s earlier version entitled Paralipomenes a la Divina Commedia, Fantaisie symphonique is also included. It has survived in the handwritingof Liszt s secretary, Gaetanio Belloni, and it contains autograph notes by Liszts. This revised (2016) edition contains not only musical scores of excellent quality, but also a detailed foreword in English and German as well as critical notes in English.

Paavo Korpijaakko's (b. 1977) guitar sonata Kimberley was composed in 2006 and dedicated to Petri Kumela. It is Korpijaakko's fist piece for the guitar, and the composers gives credit to the commissioner, who untiringly and long-sufferingly solved the challenges posed by the musical ideas and conjured forth timbral shades. Including a tribute to Debussy, a playful scherzo and some shameless flirting with a flamenco the four movement sonata arrives at a spectacular conclusion.Duration: 21'Korpijaakko studied at the Tampere Conservatory 1997â2007, majoring in composition from 2001 onwards. For most of the time he was a pupil of Jouni Kaipainen, but he was also taught by Juhani Nuorvala and Hannu Pohjannoro. Korpijaakko stresses the importance of harmony, resonant material and harmonic hierarchy, by which he means harmony as a fundamental progressive element of the piece. His aim in handling his motifs is to use his material sparingly. In this respect he specifically wants to be a kindred spirit to Beethoven. Everything that will later appear in the work must be derived from the core thematic and harmonic elements â or whatever one likes to call them. Most important is, however, to create a steady stream of interesting music.

With serious string players this Latvian composer has long been recognized because of his sonorous tonal concepts and his modal, occasionally aleatoric idiom. Works like 'Cantabile per Archi' or 'Musica dolorosa' are already quite well-known, but newer pieces like the violin concerto with string orchestra 'Fernes Licht', commissioned by Gidon Kremer for his Kremerata Baltica, are also gaining wide international exposure. The genre of the string quartet is well represented in Vasks' output. The 2nd string quartet 'Summer Tunes' (ED 8512) has been published for some time and the 3rd was premiered by the Kronos Quartet who were so enthused that they commissioned a 4th quartet. In 1996, prompted by a complete recording of all his string quartets by the Miami String Quartet for Conifer Records Vasks totally revised his early 1st string quartet 1996, it is here presented for the first time in a printed edition.
