By Jennifer Castellano. Spectrum, Seven Preludes for Piano was inspired by a work by the American artist, Ellsworth Kelly (b. 1923). The composer writes, When I was a freshman in college, I saw his work entitled Spectrum at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The work consisted of thirteen large panels, and each contained a different color or shade of color. The first panel was yellow and the last was yellow. To me this work was a visual representation of a chromatic scale played one full octave up the piano keyboard. Five years after the magnificent sighting at the Met, I decided that I wanted to make an audio representation of the seven colors of the rainbow, each represented by a different tonality or pitch center: A being red, B orange, C yellow, D green, E blue, F indigo, and G violet. Spectrum abandons the use of the conventional major-minor key systems and instead uses a scale which the composer invented called the Castellonian Mode. In it's original form the scale is spelled C D E F G G# (or Ab) A Bb C. The sound of this new tonal system exhibits both major and minor-like qualities and yet has a new sonority of its own. The Castellonian Mode was invented in the summer of 2004 and has served as the basis of many of her tonal compositions.

Gecomponeerd voor de 1e divisie van de Open Nederlandse Fanfare Kampioenschappen 2012Turend over het Friese platteland zag ik door de weerkaatsing van het zonlicht in een opkomende bui plotseling een regenboog verschijnen. Dit indrukwekkende natuurverschijnsel inspireerde me tot het schrijven van een compositie waarin de kleuren van de regenboog uitgangspunt waren. Elke kleur associeerde ik met willekeurige, contrasterende onderwerpen. Zo is Spectrum of the Sky een concertwerk geworden dat bestaat uit zeven, deels in elkaar overgaande, korte composities die qua thematiek en/of ritmiek aan elkaar gerelateerd zijn.1 Sun and Water Een regenboog verschijnt aan de horizon. Erg langduurt de betovering van dit prachtige natuurverschijnsel niet. Het schitterende plaatje wordt plots onderbroken door opkomend onweer.2 Red Planet MarsEen ruimtevaartuig vertrekt, om na een lange reis van negen maanden aan te komen op Mars, de rode planeet.3 Interlude in Orange MinorOranje: de nationale kleur van Nederland. Koninginnedag 2009. De festiviteiten op die dag werden wreed verstoord door een aanslag op de koninklijke familie. De gevolgen waren dramatisch. 4 Yellow FieldsDe eerste zonnestralen, knoppen in de bomen, nestelende vogels, pasgeboren dieren in de wei en onmetelijke velden van gele koolzaadbloemen. Een en al muzikale vrolijkheid, want het is lente.5 Capriccio in GreenGroen - de meest voorkomende kleur in de natuur. De grote diversiteit in ritmische en melodische lijnen verklankt de grilligheid van de natuur in het algemeen.6 Blue LakeDe helblauwe meren van Nieuw-Zeeland zijn van een onbeschrijfelijke schoonheid. Het magnifieke uitzicht op zoâ??n meer vormde de inspiratiebron voor het expressieve zesde deel.7 Grand Finale â??The Seventhâ?Indigo is voor het menselijk oog vaak niet te onderscheiden van blauw of violet. Deze kleur is in dit werk dan ook achterwege gelaten. De laatste verklankte kleur is violet - weerspiegeld in de septiem, het zevende interval, dat overheerst in de finale van de compositie.Jan de Haan.

With the title of this composition, Fever Fantasy, Jorg Widmann refers to its musical air: 'I often feel Robert Schumann's melodic shape to be like the amplitude of a temperature curve: nervous, flickering, feverish, an infinite number of small and large wave crests and troughs within the principal line.'The composer approaches this sound phenomenon with a setting for acoustic instruments. Nevertheless, he succeeds in conjuring up very unusual sound spectrums. Over long sections, the notation of this score mirrors the musical progressions, containing no concrete pitches but detailed performance instructions instead. Slowly, individual tones emergefrom ascending pizzicato lines, colourless sound surfaces, sounds of harmonics roughened by tremolos, and virtuoso clarinet scales, tones that do not reveal their origin until the work ends: C - F - E - D sharp, the beginning of Schumann's first violin sonata.

A memorable musical competition commissioned by the emperor Joseph II took place on 7 February 1786 as part of a festival in the orangery of the Schönbrunn palace. A German Singspiel ensemble performed Mozart’s “Schauspieldirektor†whilst Antonio Salieri’s “Prima la musica e poi le parole†was performed by the Italian court singers and musicians. This charming opera satire belongs to the genre of “metamelodramma†in which the opera itself becomes the subject of the action. The people who are part of an opera production, for example the librettist, composer and prima donna, appear as characters on the stage and are presented in a humorous self-reflection. In this ‘theatre about theatre’ Salieri parodies the music from Giuseppe Sarti’s “Giulio Sabino†in his insert arias, thus playing on the music which was totally familiar with the audience of the time. By reflecting on the musical-dramatic style of that period and discussing whether ‘the word’ or ‘the music’ should take priority, this masterpiece is considered to be an early forerunner to Richard Strauss’s “Capriccioâ€.The new edition of the score is published as part of “opera – Spectrum of European Music Theatre in Separate Editionsâ€. There are several alterations regarding the libretto text, stage directions, articulation, ornamentation, etc. which have been incorporated into this newly engraved vocal score. It was a resounding success: by the time the season came to an end, on 3 April, it had been almost continuously on the program with no decline in interest from the public, and it remained in the repertoire for more than thirty years. Countless new editions, translations, and parodies of the play bear witness to its impact far beyond the borders of Paris. Like all of Favart's works, it deals with the subject of natural love, unencumbered by considerations of money or social status endangering it from the outside through powerful aristocratic or wealthy rivals. The plot is based on a literary model, the like-named tale by Jean-Francois Marmontel, which is in turn based on a contemporary occurrence. Annette and her cousin Lubin are sharply reprimanded for their love by an estate administrator (Le Bailli) who himself has designs on Annette. He takes advantage of Annette's illegitimate pregnancy to extort her: only by marrying him can she escape condemnation by society and the church. But Annette and her lover are able to gain the protection of the local squire (Le Seigneur), and the story ends happily with a conciliatory gesture from the lord of the manor.The second volume in our series OPERA, Annette et Lubin, consists of a cloth-bound book and an Edirom file stored on a USB card in credit-card format. Or genes se compose de six parties : une introduction, quatre parties principales et une conclusionqui résume brillement les divers éléments de la pièce.
