Squarcio has the explosive energy typical of Tiina Myllarinen's (b. 1979) music and grows in overlapping crescendos. It may be divided into two parts, the expansive first leading to a denser, more layered second. The music is marked off by strong, polyrhythmic eruptions and everdenser crescendos that carry the piece to its close. There is, however, one more surprise in store just before the final build-up. Duration: 8 minutes Instrumentation: 1110-0110-pf-str(11111) The performance material available for hire.

With the “Fingertip Dancesâ€, Gerald Resch joins a long tradition of composers who have written pieces for their own children and, in so doing, have immersed themselves in childlike worlds of images and experiences. Mila, Gerald Resch's daughter and the dedicatee of the “Fingertip Dancesâ€, received them as a special present for her ninth birthday: she is able to call her own these thirteen little pieces that have gained considerable attention through their variety of musical ideas and pianistic challenges. Following the original version for piano (SIK 1708), a selection of eight pieces for youth ensemble is now available as part of the edition series “exempla nova – for the young.†Gerald Resch arranged these eight pieces of the (13) “Fingertip Dances†in response to a commission of the “Brücken-Festival†in Mürzzuschlag 2015. All text in German.

The ensemble work “Scattered Shades,†composed in 2014, of the Chinese composer Guoping Jia for the instrumentation flute, clarinet, violin, violoncello and piano was premiered on 21 May 2014 in Beijing at the 'Beijing Modern Music Festival,' performed by the ensemble 'Les Temps Modernes.' Although this work received its essential inspiration from ancient Chinese pen-and-ink painting, it also simultaneously documents the overcoming of a creative crisis. During an artistically difficult period, Jia assigned himself the task in 1997 to compose a study that was to supersede the compositional techniques used so far with the means of rational construction. “Scattered Shades†has recourse to this study, retracing its structure in a more profound way with a different ensemble.

“Hommage à Daniel Libeskind†consists of three books (Vol. I, Vol. II, Vol. III) that can be performed separately or in sequence (asa single work). Vol. II was commissioned by the “Ensemble SurPlus†with support by the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung and premieredin Freiburg on 8 December 2012 by “Ensemble SurPlusâ€. The work uses construction plans for the Jewish Museum in Berlin by Daniel Libeskind. It can therefore also be considered a homage to that work of architecture. The work consists of miniatures with constantly changing instrumental combinations from solo to full sextet (quintet in Vol. II). These miniatures (18-22) overlap or follow each another without interruption (“attaccaâ€). The basis idea is that of sustained notes without any expression or parametric change (“dinamica staticaâ€). These notes can, so to speak, be “upgraded†(through expression) or “devalued†by eliminating the pitch component in favour of unpitched noise.

“Detto II” for violoncello and chamber ensemble was composed in 1972 for the Russian cellist Natalia Schachovskaya. The Italian word “Detto” (“that which is said”) in the title of the one-movement work refers to the narrative character of the music. The special expressive quality of the work is essentially determined by the quarter-tone glissandi played on the solo instrument. During the course of the composition, there is a development of initially meditative stasis leading to a dramatically impulsive middle section. Finally, the work concludes in contemplative peace. This conception corresponds to the idea of a gradual expansion of the melodic steps in the solo violoncello from quarter-tones to several octaves and back again to quarter-tones. Such a compositional design lends the work a wavelike dynamic. “Detto II” is also striking for its colourful use of the richly endowed percussion apparatus. Especially interesting is the sonic dissolution of the coda in which the violoncello theme dies away almost to the point of inaudibility, with ppp inserts by the flute, celesta, glockenspiel, crotales and high strings.

“This composition for 10 instruments was commissioned by the Prague ensemble 'Musica Viva'. The title of the work arose from the desire to find a consonance in the midst of a world of sound filled with dissonance. Formally, this was reflected in the interrelationships between individual instruments and groups of instruments as well as between different types of structure and sound production, thereby addressing the contrast between harmony and discord.”(Sofia Gubaidulina).

The work was composed for the Haydn Chamber Ensemble commissioned by the Haydnfestspiele Eisenstadt (Kammermusikzyklus 2015). Supported by the Österreichisches Bundesministerium für Unterricht, Kunst und Kultur. Gerald Resch comments on “Sostenuto†as follows: “The Haydn Chamber Ensemble approached me with their request for a piano trio referring to the 'romantic' aspect of Joseph Haydn. His D-major Piano Trio, Hob.XV/24 is a wonderful example of how Haydn opened a door onto a new era during the last decade of his productivity. The initial impulse for 'Sostenuto' was my confrontation with Haydn's D-major Piano Trio.â€.
