The thrills of downhill skiing inspired Carter Pann’s SLALOM, originally a multi-prize winning orchestral work, and well-loved in the composer’s own wind ensemble scoring. This tone poem flashes through sections including First Run, Open Meadow, Champagne Powder, Straight Down, Tuck, and On One Ski, Gyrating.Pann’s program note explains, The work is performed at a severe tempo throughout, showcasing the wind ensemble’s volatility and endurance. The work is presented as a collection of scenes and events one might come by on the slopes. In this way SLALOM shares its programmatic feature with that of Richard Strauss’ Alpine Symphony.Slalomxa0was originally written for orchestra in 1998-99 as a scherzo perpetuo. It was to be a chance to flex my orchestration muscle to a degree I had not yet reached. In 2001 conductor John Lynch was seeking to commission a new work for wind symphony, and we agreed thatxa0Slalomxa0could make an attractive addition to the repertoire. Arranging the piece for wind symphony has proven my most astute compositional act to date.Slalomxa0is a taste of the thrill of downhill skiing. The work is performed at a severe tempo throughout, showcasing the orchestra’s volatility and endurance. The idea for a piece like this came directly out of a wonderful discovery I made several years ago at Steamboat Springs, Colorado, when I embarked on the mountain-base gondola with a cassette player and headphones. At the time I was treating myself to large doses of Shostakovich’sxa0Tenth Symphonyxa0and Rachmaninoff’sxa0Symphonic Dances.xa0The exhilaration of barreling down the Rockies with such music pumping into my ears was overwhelming. After a few years of skiing with some of the greatest repertoire, it occurred to me that I could customize the experience. The work is presented as a collection of scenes and events one might come by on the slopes. The score is peppered with phrase-headings for the different sections such as “First Run”, “Open Meadow, Champagne Powder”, “Straight Down, Tuck” and “On One Ski, Gyrating ” among others. In this way SLALOMxa0shares its programmatic feature with that ofxa0Richard Strauss’xa0Alpine Symphony.xa0The similarities end there, however, forxa0SLALOMxa0lasts ten minutes ... precisely the amount of time I need to get from Storm Peak (the peak of Mt. Werner, Steamboat Springs) to the mountain base, skiing full throttle.

Suite in B-flat is in three movements. The first section is jaunty and lighthearted, the second is subdued and tranquil, whilst the third is a symphonic march which gives the bands plenty of chance to blow their socks off.British composer Gordon Jacob ranks as one of the world's foremost contributors to the wind ensemble repertoire, with hundreds of works for military band as well as other types of musical groups. He earned his Doctor of Music degree and also taught counterpoint, orchestration and composition for 40 years at the Royal College of Music. He wrote band works along the lines of Gustav Holst and his good friend Vaughan Williams - not imitating their style but, as he said, striving to come near to their spirit of adventure and independence of thought in his own work. This suite was originally written for Brass Band in 1955 and was arranged for symphonic band in 1979. It has three movements, opening with a lighthearted March, followed by a subdued and tranquil movement entitled Solemn Music. The suite closes with a symphonic march, which showcases the power of the wind ensemble.

Festival March is presented in a new edition arranged by Richard Summers. It is a tour de force composition for advanced bands and hearkens back to a bygone era during the golden age of the band movement. Directors and students will hear operatic music from composer Victor Herbert who is best known for his Christmas classic, Toyland. This is a richly scored masterpiece that deserves to return to standard status in concert band repertoire. We are proud to bring you this new setting of this cherished classic.Festival March by Victor Herbert was written for the Pittsburgh Symphony and first performed under Herbert’s direction in Chicago on Dec. 9, 1901 celebrating the 12th anniversary of Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Also known as the Auditorium Festival March, he included it many times for programs of a festival nature. The main theme Auld Lang Syne, a famous Scottish folk song, is incorporated many times along with brass fanfares, interludes and march melodies. This band arrangement is very similar to the original orchestral composition. The missing string parts, the addition of the saxophone section and other band instruments, editing of the superimposed triplets against sixteenth notes, to one or the other, and articulations suitable for the band, were major challenges. The style of early twentieth-century American music is captured here. This arrangement will give band musicians access to a fine piece of music that could only be appreciated by orchestra musicians up to now. Although suitable for many occasions, this piece is a great way to begin or end a December holiday concert.  Notes to the ConductorVictor Herbert’s music can be interpreted in a romantic style, which is the conductor’s responsibility to read in nuance and musicality. The beginning and other triple-tonguing sections of this piece have a March of the Toys quality to it.  The interludes and Auld Lang Syne sections are legato and musical. The March sections can also be shaped musically.About the ComposerVictor Herbert was born in Ireland in 1861 and raised in Germany. When he moved to America in 1886, he joined the Metropolitan Opera as principal cellist and eventually composed many works including forty-three operettas on Broadway from the 1890s to World War I, including Naughty Marietta and Babes in Toyland. Victor Herbert conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1898 to 1904 and then was the conductor of his own Victor Herbert Orchestra. He formed ASCAP with a group of composers in 1914 and was the director until his death in 1924. Among his thirty-one compositions for orchestra, Festival March was a favorite of his and was eventually published by Carl Fischer Music.  .

A dynamic concert overture that derives most of its force and material from the striking fanfare motive announced in the opening measure by horns and trumpets (concert Eb, Bb, Ab, Db). The bold opening in compound time is followed by a suave and flowing Adagio in 4/4 meter that makes a lovely tune out of a variant of the opening motive. At measure 103, with a marimba solo, the Allegro style and compound meter return for a rousing and invigorating climax. This piece is a significant addition to the band repertoire for concert and contest. Duration: 6'30 Keys: Eb, Ab Ranges: Trumpet-A; Horn-F; Trombone-G.

Best playability and musical spirit - this is what characterizes the music of Bertold Hummel who died in 2002, and why his music must be part of the repertoire of any amateur and semi-professional orchestra. The 'Oregon Symphony' occupies a special position in his oeuvre: it was written by Hummel for the typically American symphonic wind bands, requiring almost 100 musicians, including 15 clarinets in three groups of five alone, as well as four piccolos and six flutes, bass clarinet, bassoons, saxophones, trumpets, horns, tubas and the typically American sousaphone, and five percussionists. The work consists of four movements; in the rousing finale, Hummel mixes jazz motifs with popular themes and even weaves the anthem of the State of Oregon in the final music. For getting better acquainted with this music, the first movement is also separately available ('Symphonische Ouverture', SHS 1001).Picc. * 2 * 2 * Klar. in Es * 3 * Bassklar. in B * 2 Altsax. in Es * Tenorsax. in B * Baritonsax. in Es * 2 - 4 * 3 (Korn.) * 3 * Tenorhr. in B (Bar.) * 2 - P. A concert version of the dance music from the second act of the sensational opera for voices and wind ensemble by Daron Aric Hagen (see Overture above), this varied and colorful piece will be a brilliant addition to the program of a Grade Four band. The music dramatically reflects the growing conflicts of the story (based on Othello) and climaxes with a powerful setting of the big tune associated with the idea of crossing over from Mexico to the U.S., and from Life to Death. This piece is a major addition to the serious band repertoire and has been added to the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List. Duration: 7'.

A passionate new lyrical piece based on themes from Verdi's opera La Forza del Destino. Composer Gregory Rudgers morphs these themes and makes them his own in a welcome addition to the band repertoire for more advanced groups. It will stretch the musiciality of all groups that wisely choose to program this substantial work.
