In January 1834, the great violinist Niccolo Paganini asked Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) to write a viola concerto so that he could showcase his newly-acquired Stradivarius, though Paganini rejected the work when he saw that he would not be playing continuously. HAROLD EN ITALIE (HAROLD IN ITALY), Op. 16/ H. 68, inspired by the travels of the Byronic hero, premiered on November 23, 1834, with the Orchestre de la Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire. Chretien Urhan performed as soloist instead of Paganini under the baton of Narcisse Girard. Rather than a concerto, it is more accurately described as a symphony with viola obbligato. Hearing it at a December 1838 concert, an ecstatic Paganini pulled the composer back onto the stage and knelt to kiss his hand. Franz Liszt prepared a piano transcription with viola accompaniment of the work in 1836 as S.472. The performance material available up till now for Dvorákâ??s sun-filled cheerful Symphony no. 8 has been notorious for its myriad mistakes. The challenge of correcting it has now been taken over by the editor Jonathan Del Mar. He has taken into account the engraverâ??s copy, which was actually discovered in a trash bin at Novelloâ??s in 1964. Its title page bears the words â??Copied from my original manuscriptâ? in Dvorákâ??s hand. This source proves that many of the readings contained in the first edition and faithfully adopted in all subsequent editions, were simply slips of the copyistâ??s pen.This new edition with score and orchestral parts in an enlarged format is accompanied by a detailed Critical Commentary on the sources and alternative readings. It also contains important facsimile pages to clarify problematical readings.

The European Hymn is the hymn not only of the European Union but of Europe in a broader sense. The melody has been taken from the Ninth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven from 1823.In the last movement of this symphony Beethoven set music to the 'Ode to Joy' by Friedrich von Schiller from 1785. This poem sprang from Schiller's idealistic vision of men who become brothers - a vision Beethoven shared with him.In 1972 the Council of Europe adopted Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' as its anthem. The well-known conductor Herbert von Karajan was commissioned to arrange three instrumental versions - for solo piano, wind orchestra and symphony orchestra. Without words, in the universal language of music, the anthem is an expression of the idealistic values of freedom, peace and solidarity which Europe stands for.In 1985 the heads of state and government adopted the hymn as the EU's official anthem. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his Hafner Symphony K. 385 in the summer of 1782 on the occasion of the elevation into the nobility of his friend and patron Sigmund Hafner. Next to the well-known movements, this version (A) also contained the March K. 408/2 (385a) and possibly a second, no longer extant minuet. Called Hafner=Musique by Mozart, the work was unquestionably a serenade at first. In early 1783 Mozart then reduced the Hafner Music for his subscription concert at the Vienna Burgtheater on 23 March 1783 to a four-movement symphony. This is the form in which the work was first printed in 1785 (Version B). For a further performance, Mozart added flute and clarinet parts to the symphony. In 1805, this version (C) was published by Andre in Offenbach, who thus began making it known.The primary sources of the present Breitkopf Urtext edition are the autographs to K. 385 and K. 408/2 (385a). It thus becomes possible for the first time to play all three versions of the Hafner Music, since the variants of Versions A and B can be easily discerned through indications in footnotes and notes in small print.

Mozart’s love affair with the city of Prague began as a courtship by a group of patrons who were so impressed with Mozart's opera, The Marriage of Figaro, that they paid for his trip to Prague to hear the opera's premiere in 1786. As Mozart had recently completed his Symphony No. 38, it was decided that the orchestra would perform a separate premier for this work, which led to the nickname Prague. This arrangement functions much like a concerto grosso with string soloists performing the woodwind parts, accompanied by tutti string sections and timpani, just as Mozart penned them. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was commissioned by the city of Leipzig to write the Symphony Cantata Lobgesang for the 400th anniversary of the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg. The work was given its first performance in Leipzigs Thomaskirche on 25 June 1840. Another performance took place at the Birmingham Music Festival on 23 September 1840.
