Bruckner began composing the Eighth Symphony, his last completed symphony, in July 1884, working mainly during the summer vacations from his duties at the University of Vienna and the Vienna Conservatory. When he finished the work's revelatory finale, he signed it Hallelujah, and reported enthusiastically, The Finale is the most significant movement of my life. Following the premiere performance, a peer composer penned, Its success was almost without precedent. It was the absolute victory of light over darkness. This work leaps to life with awe-inspiring power in this first-ever setting for string orchestra with optional timpani. Transposed from its original key of C minor/major to D minor/major, the music sits nicely for all parts, ready for any concert or festival. The conductor should encourage students to vary the bow lanes, weight, and speed to produce powerful forte and expressive piano dynamics. Encourage mature players to make expressive fingering choices and to use vibrato. Students should practice coloring the tone and intensity through bowing lanes, variable bow weight, and appropriate bow speeds.Bruckner began composing the Eighth Symphony, his last completed symphony, in July 1884, working mainly during the summer vacations from his duties at the University of Vienna and the Vienna Conservatory. Symphony No. 44 is one of a number of Haydn’s middle period works often regarded as representing the so-called Sturm und Drang (‘Storm and Stress’) style of melodramatic realism taken over from contemporary German literary and dramatic models. The symphony is monotonal – each movement being in the same key, with contrast provided by excursions into the tonic major. Contrapuntal writing pervades the whole work; the second movement, unusually, is a minuet and is a strict double canon at one bar’s interval (‘Canone in Diapason’ is Haydn’s term) which itself is contrasted by the lyrical Trio section in the tonic major. The third movement, an Adagio in the tonic major, prompted the symphony’s long-adopted soubriquet, ‘Trauer’ (‘Mourning’) as it was said to have been requested by the composer himself to be played at his own funeral.2 The monothematic contrapuntal Finale reverts to the tense emotional level of the opening Allegro.

Cesar Franck wrote his Symphony in D minor in 1887/88; in spite of the work's lukewarm reception at its world premiere on 17 February 1889, the work was published during his lifetime. It was not until a few years later that the established conductors dared perform this work more frequently . It marked the inevitable triumph of a work which had once caused such a furor and whose individuality of conception burst the framework of the genre (double tonality of D and F minor in the opening movement; the combination of Andante and Scherzo in the central one; the recapitulation of the main themes and motifs of the previous movements in the finale). The work was finally accepted into the concert repertoire for good around the turn of the century, not least through the good offices of influential critics and composers.Just as with the previously published Carnival of the Animals (PB/OB 5321) by Saint-Saens, Franck's work also raises many questions concerning its origin and history. Peter Jost based his work on the first edition (the autograph was destroyed in a fire in 1935) as well as on the piano reduction (four-handed) by the composer.A major work of the late-romantic repertoire, Cesar Franck's only symphony joins the ranks of Breitkopf & Hartel's new orchestral editions which follow the principles of Source Criticism for Practical Use.

The twelve “London Symphonies†comprise the sublime final statement of Haydn's symphonic ouvre. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. Probably composed in the winter of 1791/92, the Symphony in D major no. 93 was, with its easily accessible (butby no means simple!) musical structure, perfectly tailored to London tastes, which demanded melodic clarity and expressive pathos. The Baroque echoes of Handel in the slow introduction to the first movement and in the festive mood of the finale with its timpani and trumpets would have been well received - no wonder the symphony had to be repeated multiple times in the same season after its performance in 1792! This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy score an ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.

Weakened by a series of chronic illnesses and aware of his impending death, Shostakovich looks back on his life in Symphony No.15 inA major, op.141. The work opens with cheerful reminiscences from his youth, featuring quotations from his early works and allusions to Rossini. But already by the second movement, a funeral march rich with self-quotation, the mood changes. In the cantabile movement which follows, one hears the murmuring ghosts of the past. With echoes of Richard Wagner, the eerie finale ultimately instructs the listener to remain fearful through its crumbling tonality. This volume is part of the revised and corrected new edition of all 15 symphonies by Dmitri Shostakovich published by Boosey & Hawkes and Sikorski as large format study scores for optimal legibility. All scores and the related orchestral parts have been newly computer typeset, and the orchestral parts are also compatible for performance use with scores in “The New Collected Works of DmitriShostakovichâ€.

In this small three-movement symphony written by Mozart at the age of ten, the rondo form is used for the first time in the finale. Like the Lambacher Sinfonie in G major, this work can also be played without wind instruments as -pure string symphony. In the second movement, two solo violins have to play the oboe parts here and there.

Symphony No.63 La Roxelane the first movement of which re-employs (with reduced instrumentation and some structural adjustment to conform to its new symphonic setting) the overture to Haydn’s opera Il mondo della luna which was originally composed for the 1777 season at Esterháza. The second movement, headed Roxelane Allegretto, is a set of variations on the French melody La Roxelane which reveals itself as an early example of the composer’s favoured double-variation form of contrasting major and minor key sections. Roxelane herself is the leading female character in Les trois sultanes, a stage play by Charles Simon Favart performed by Karl Wahr and his theatrical troupe in a German translation at Esterháza in that same year with (we assume) incidental music by Haydn. The Menuetto and concluding Finale Presto of the symphony were newly-composed and do not (as far as we know) make use of re-cycled theatrical music.

Sonata 1 in D major opens with a Larghetto full of the rhetorical kind of expression one associates with Handel. It is followed by a busy Allegro and a concise Tempo di Minuetto movement that celebrates the extreme popularity of this dance, which, in contrast to its role in the Classical symphony, most often serves as a finale in works written around the middle of the century. | Sonata 2 in G major is in a traditional pastoral key. This association is confirmed immediately in a charming siciliana marked Andante. The Allegro assai that follows is dominated by its three-hammer-blow opening motive, which Balicourt treats with great insistence and some ingenuity. The concluding pair of movements illustrates Balicourt’s Janus-like cultivation of both galant and baroque musical languages. The Andante in E minor takes us into the world of a slow movement in a mid-eighteenth-century operatic sinfonia, while the Allegro has all the characteristics of a Corellian giga written fifty years earlier.

Scored for Piccolo, 2 flutes, alto flute and bass flute. This is the first appearance of the whole work as a flute choir arrangement. In four movements, Boisterous Bouree, Playful Pizzicato, Sentimental Sarabande and Frolicsome Finale. Written in an accessible style, with modern twists to the timing and harmonies, this pieces is a fantastic addition to the flute ensemble repertoire. The first movement alternates between a running contrapuntal theme, and a more lyrical/harmonic second subject. Alternating between D minor and D major and reaching a thrilling climax before disappearing into nothing. The second movement is even faster (Presto possible), with neat fingering and tonguing required for the arpeggiated theme. The third movement is slow and seriuos, and is in G minor. A lovely mournful lyrical theme soars over modern sounding chords and harmonies. the finale is again fast (Prestissimo con fuoco), and requires some extremely fast tonguing in all parts (easier ossias are included). A fantastic opportunity for flautists to try something new!

The premiere of this work in December 1813 ranks among the greatest successes Beethoven ever celebrated in public as a composer. One reviewer wrote at the time that in its themes the new symphony was “so favourable and easily comprehensible that every music lover falls for the powerful allure of its beauty.†The incisiveness of the themes is fundamentally related to the basic ostinato rhythms, which help shape each movement’s distinctive character. Richard Wagner even called the composition, with its ecstatic finale, an “apotheosis of the dance.†Based on the musical text of the Beethoven Complete Edition and furnished with a new preface, this recently prepared edition reflects the latest in Beethoven scholarship. Now, in this study edition, it is available to everyone at a reasonable price and in a handy format.

Mozart’s love affair with the City of Prague began as a courtship by a group of patrons who were so impressed with Mozart's opera, The Marriage of Figaro, that they paid for his trip to Prague to hear the opera's premiere in 1786. As Mozart had recently completed his Symphony No. 38, it was decided that the orchestra would perform a separate premier for this work, which led to the nickname Prague. This arrangement functions much like a concerto grosso with string soloists performing the woodwind parts, accompanied by tutti string sections and timpani, just as Mozart penned them. As such, it is a great teaching tool for Classical style playing and an opportunity to feature your top players in a brilliant piece of timeless repertoire.

Pleyel was one of the most popular and prolific composers in western Europe at the turn of the nineteenth century. This symphony, composed in 1791, represents a grandiose gesture to his teacher Haydn, since the Adagio second movement and the Finale are clearly related to his music. A dramatic first movement and a surprisingly rich Minuet and Trio complete this striking work, written for London's Professional Concerts society.
