Christmas Musical This Christmas cantata is a faithful retelling of the Christmas story, the gospel, in song and narration, and a wonderful mixture of the new and the old, the traditional and the freshness of the contemporary. The narrations are deep and insightful, demanding much passion and heartfelt emotion. The choir will enjoy these choral arrangements, including one of Jack Schrader's top-selling pieces, Mary, Did You Know? The work makes a strong impact when done with simply choir, piano, and narration; however, full orchestrations are available. Also, the narrations are perfect to suggest the inclusion of costumed actors creating tableaux of the various scenes, so, the work may be fully staged or as simply presented as necessary. Go Tell It! has moments of quiet worship and reflection, as well as the exuberant times of joy and celebration. The congregation is frequently involved, being asked to sing on four occasions, which leads to a satisfying experience for all who participate. Performance time is approximately 39 minutes. The Urtext edition (2023) of Jean Sibelius’ Five Christmas Songs op. 1 for voice and piano is based on the critical edition presented in the volume VIII/2 Works for Solo Voice Vol. 2 of Jean Sibelius Works (JSW) edited by Jukka Tiilikainen. The lyrics are included in Swedish, Finnish and English.Sakari Ylivuori's introduction illuminates the history of the beloved songs: May 1, 1913 was cold and wet. Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) spent the day at home at Ainola composing two Christmas songs: settings of poems for children by Zachris Topelius. The two songs born on that chilly spring day were Nu står jul vid snöig port (Now stands Yule at the snowy gate) and Nu så kommer julen (Now is Christmas coming). He then put them together with three Christmas carols he had earlier composed and gave the set the imposing Opus number 1. He had previously considered giving the distinction to various other works, but from 1915 onwards the Five Christmas Songs had the honour of heading his catalogue. Traditional carols, original music, lyrics, and scripture from the gospels of Luke and Matthew are all used to tell the Christmas story. Options are provided for using candles and actor tableaux to embellish the performance. The performance time of 25 minutes makes this ideal for use as part of the worship service.
