Grieg’s suite from ‘Sigurd Jorsalfar’ remains one of his most popular works and here, arranged by Wil van der Beek, we are pleased to be able to offer a version for Concert Band. This one will be a sure-fire hit with any fans of classical music. In 1872 - Twee jaar voor hij Peer Gynt gegon te werken - componeerde Grieg de muziek bij het toneelstuk Sigurd Jorsalfar (Sigurd de kruisvaarder) van Bjørnsterne Bjørnsons. Enkele jaren later voegde hij de drie belangrijksteorkestgedeelten samen tot een gelijknamige concertsuite. In The King's Hall is overigens de orkestversie van een inn 1867 door Grieg geschreven gavotte voor viool en piano. Wil van der Beek schreef de versie voor armonieorkest.In der Königshalle erweckt die Atmosphäre der historischen Szenerie, in der sich das mittelalterliche Drama Sigurd Jorsalfar abspielt, zum Leben. Wil van der Beek schuf eine authentische, überzeugende Bearbeitung für Blasorchester von Edvard Griegs Komposition. En 1872, Grieg écrivit une musique de scène pour la nouvelle pièce de thé tre de son ami, intitulée Sigurd Jorsalfar (‘‘Sigurd, le croisé’’). La musique comporte huit pièces, dont deux chorals. En 1892, Grieg remaniait trois de ces pièces qu’il faisait publier un an après, sous forme de suite séparée, Op. 56. La première pièce, Prélude : dans le hall du roi (In The King’sHall) développe un thème solennel qui chemine vers des mélodies plus intimistes auxquelles les bois apportent une coloration nostalgique.

Das Werk basiert auf einer altnordischen Sage von zwei Brudern, die beide um den Konigsthron kampfen und einer Frau, die den Streit schlichten soll. Wil van der Beek bearbeitete den feierlichen Huldigungsmarsch aus diesem Werk fur Blasorchester. La Marche d'Hommage de l'acte III de la suite orchestrale Sigurd Jorsalfar d'Edvard Grieg, se trouve a l'oppose des marches au caractere sombre ou martial. L'introduction en forme de fanfare est superbement lyrique. Puis vient l'exposition d'un theme joue cantabile. L'instrumentation developpe quelque peu le theme initial avec des accents rythmiques a la basse. Le theme de la marche est ainsi amorce. Un trio central, lumineux et serein, precede le retour du theme de marche au tutti.

Music for the ages: the coronation anthems Zadok the priest, Let thy hand be strengthened, The King shall rejoice and My heart is inditing, which Handel composed for the coronation of George II in 1727, are true masterpieces of the choral literature. The King shall rejoice was probably played during the crowning of the king in London's Westminster Abbey.For the Carus edition, available either individually or as a set, musicologist, composer and flutist Alon Schab has returned to the original manuscripts, paying special attention to the specific circumstances that played a role in the creation of the anthems. Befitting such a festive occasion, Handel’s choir in 1727 was a large ensemble composed of singers from two institutions. This six- or seven-voice ensemble had to be carefully balanced to perform the passages for four or five voices. Handel’s autograph score shows how he adapted his composition, originally conceived for a four- or five-voice choir, to the particular circumstances of the premiere: The manuscript is peppered with surprising vocal doublings, insertions, and rests, intended to ensure that, for example, the few tenors were not overpowered by the more numerous altos and basses, the boy sopranos harmonized with the mature voices, and the chorus blended well with the instruments in the rich ambience of Westminster Abbey.This edition traces these ad hoc additions to reveal a score that is startlingly similar to Handel’s familiar and beautifully direct choral style. All editorial decisions are thoroughly documented in the critical report.

The composer made this arrangement of the Third String Quartet for string orchestra in March 2003. The first performance was given by the Eos Orchestra, New York, conducted by Ken Selden in the Concert Hall, Ethical Cultural Society, New York City on 24 April 2003.Quoting composer: In the summer of 1989 I composed a choral work, Out of the Ruins, for Agnieszka Piotrowska's BBC2 documentary which dealt with the physical and emotional responses of some of the inhabitants of Leninakhan to the earthquake which devastated Armenia the previous December. When he heard the recording of the work that I made with the Holy Echmiadzin Chorus under the fervent conducting of Khoren Meykhanejian, Alex Balanescu suggested turning Out of the Ruins into a string quartet. There seemed no reason or opportunity to do this until I felt the need to add to the intensity of my experiences in Armenia the no less profound experience of witnessing the images of the Romanian revolution on television during the latter part of December 1989.Just as the structure of my Third String Quartet (1990) may connect it with the First, so they also share a debt to Thurston Dart (my professor at King's College, London, between 1961 and 1965). It was Dart who had the inspiration to send me to Romania in 1965, ostensibly to study folk music. The volumes of transcriptions that I brought back with me had remained unopened until, with this proposed 'celebratory' string quartet (though at the time it was difficult to know quite what to celebrate in postrevolutionary Romania), an occasion arose where I could use this material in what seemed to me was a non-exploitative manner. The compositional procedure was as follows: to take Out of the Ruins as a template on which the Romanian vocal or instrumental music would be superimposed, quite often stretched into new intervallic shapes through the demands of the completely pre-formed harmonic structure.

Before the days of photography, the great state occasions were captured in paintings and tapestries. In this Suite, the composer has imagined the pomp and splendor of the English court at work and play, capturing each mood in a short movement.Stuart Johnson has the fine ability to capture moods and scenes in music. He was born in Staffordshire, the county for which he was Director of Music until his retirement in 1997. After experience as a player in brass bands, he served in the band of the King's Dragoon Guards before training as a teacher and working in schools. Following a period as a lecturer at Northumberland College of Education he became Music Adviser to the Metropolitan District of Sandwell prior to his appointment to Staffordshire. He has long experience as a conductor, particularly in the choral and band fields and also wide experience as an adjudicator and examiner. He has written prolifically for bands and orchestras and his didactic publications are used in many countries. He has over eighty published compositions and arrangements, many of which have been broadcast on radio or television. His commissioned works include the cantata David and Goliath which was first performed at the Royal Festival Hall, Oregon Overture for wind orchestra, Landscapes, Sinfonietta No 2, Wessex Dances and A Castle Suite. Stuart Johnson has recently completed several commissions, funded by National Lottery grants, for bands in Cumbria, the Isle of Wight, and Staffordshire. Requiem for Soprano, Chorus and Orchestra, was premiered successfully in front of a capacity audience in Lichfield Cathedral in March 1997, and received its first London performance at St. John's Smith Square in March 1998. This prestigious venue also saw the first performance of Songs and Sonnets for unaccompanied mixed choir in 2001. Stuart Johnson has written extensively for the theatre, his music for the production of Anna of the Five Towns was used for both the radio and television adaptations His music ranges in style from the evocative and demanding Sinfonietta for Wind Orchestra, which has received many performances since its premiere in the Royal Festival Hall, including a broadcast by the Band of the Scots Guards, to his ubiquitous Bandstand Boogie which has set feet tapping all over the world. Apart from the latter his most performed work is probably Circus Suite which was the British Youth Band Championship test piece in 1980. Northumbrian Suite and Landscapes have also been used as National Brass Band Championship test pieces. The Flint Knappers commissioned as a test piece for the 1998 East Anglian Band Festival was selected as a test piece for the 1999 Australian Championships.
