Well known New York jazz writer Andy Farber has produced another great composition, this one is in the Duke Ellington mold. Alternates between Latin and swing sections throughout and features a trumpet solo (which can easily be played other instruments). Sahara is an exciting programmatic work for concert band that musically paints a picture of a fantastical desert crossing in three contrasting sections. The first section depicts a large caravan moving across the giant dunes. The second section describes a visit to a palace in a mystical oasis city. The third section brings the piece to an epic close as the caravan outruns a sandstorm to reach their final destination. Performance Notes You may use a set of congas in addition to or in lieu of the dumbek part to bring out that pitched drum sound. At m. 4, emphasize the accented quarter notes in the horns and euphonium. Measures 17-26, make sure that the sixteenth note marimba part is heard clearly. In measures 48-92, this entire middle section may be played in a rubato style at the director's discretion to achieve maximum musical expression. Be sure to emphasize the crescendo-decrescendo dynamics in this entire section. In measures 56-61, be sure that the syncopated flute and clarinet parts are heard clearly. and the flute and oboe are heard as well mm. 76-81. The descending eighth notes in the bass clarinet and tuba part should be brought out in mm. 76-81. Albion ist neben Excalibur und Stonehenge das dritte große Werk für Brass Band, bei dem sich Jan van der Roost durch das englische Mittelalter inspirieren ließ. Obgleich sie nicht auf einer konkreten Geschichte beruht sind die erzählerischen Momente in dieser Sinfonischen Dichtung nicht zu übersehen. Der Anfang gibt einen Einduck von der Eroberung Albions (Albion ist der erste überlieferte Name der britischen Insel); der Zuhörer taucht dabei in die Zeit von König Artus und seinen legendären Rittern der Tafelrunde ein.

Après Excalibur et Stonehenge, Albion est la troisième œuvre majeure pour Brass Band de Jan Van der Roost inspirée par l’Angleterre du Moyen ge. Bien que l’œuvre ne soit pas construite autour d’une histoire précise, ce poème symphonique a toute l’ampleur d’une épopée. L’ouverture de l’œuvre semble dépeindre la conquête d’Albion (premier nom connu de l’Angleterre), transportant l’auditeur l’époque du roi Arthur et de ses légendaires chevaliers de la Table Ronde. Trois groupes de cornets dispersés au sein de la formation et trois tambours différents reflètent, en autant de tonalités et de tempos, les périodes de guerre qui plongent l’Angleterredu début du Moyen ge dans la tourmente. Des accords sombres et majestueux, exposés dans le registre grave, créent un contraste et donnent au son d’ensemble un caractère trouble et confus. Lorsque les tambours se retrouvent dans un même rythme, l’ensemble de la formation interprète pour la première fois l’unisson le Thème d’Albion.Un allegro energico plein d’agitation apporte soudainement plus d’élan et de dynamisme. Des thèmes virtuoses et guerriers se succèdent, donnant au passage un caractère tumultueux. Cette suite de thèmes se conclut également avec le Thème d’Albion, soutenu cette fois-ci par une structure harmonique plus complexe. S’ensuit un passage intermédiaire calme et serein, permettant plusieurs solistes d’exploiter et de révéler leurs qualités musicales. Après tout, Albion n’a pas connu que des périodes de troubles et de misère. Et le roi Arthur n’est-il pas considéré comme celui qui a apporté paix et stabilité au pays ? Cette lente succession de fragments en solo progresse avec une fluidité presque évidente vers un passage où l’orchestre interprète en chœur les accords majestueux des mesures d’ouverture de l’œuvre. Le Brass Band sonne comme un orgue et le Thème d’Albion vient tout naturellement conclure cette oasis de paix retrouvée. Dans le finale impressionnant, plusieurs éléments thématiques.

Bresnick's fascinating quartet, Every Thing Must Go, was written for and championed by the Prism Saxophone Quartet, and the Oasis Quartet has provided a YouTube performance of two movements. Broschinsky, an excellent young trombonist and founding member of the Guidonian Hand Trombone Quartet, has now arranged Bresnick's quartet for four trombones.

Composer Gregory Singer's waltz depicting the calm oasis of Central Park is fresh and new, but somehow immediately recognizable. Students and audiences alike will be taken by this piece from the very first note. It is an excellent piece to teach young string players about waltz style.
As a child, I enjoyed roller skating at an amusement park in Portland Oregon named Oaks Park. I remember the waltz music playing as the announcement came Couples only, or All skate. Years later in New York City, I awakened from sleep one morning with the theme of this waltz in my ears. It was so cheerful and corny that I asked myself You’ve got to be kidding me, where did this melody come from? I realized it was my original. I notated it immediately, and a few weeks later I added the second musical theme and named it Central Park Waltz. It reminds me of the skating rinks that I have enjoyed over the years.
