This gentle song from the folk era of the 1960s achieved even greater popularity when it was performed by John Denver and the Muppets in 1979 in their Christmas special and subsequent album. Now a classic, performed worldwide, it will bring a moment of quiet reflection on the meaning of the season to your concert.

Inspired by the classic carol Silent Night, this newly composed sacred nocturne moves beyond its source material and delivers an exquisite portrait of Christmas grace. A memorable melody propels the piece forward with gentle phrasing while a flowing piano part offers colorful support. The development section offers contrast as the angelic chorus breaks forth with luminous praise. An optional chamber orchestration beautifully wraps this message of hope in a sonic blanket. Very special! Score and Parts (fl, ob, cl, bn, hn, vibes, aux perc, pno, hp, vn 1-2, va, vc, db) available as a digital download.

Bethlehem Carol was the result of a commission in 2000 from the Cathedral Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The request came from the Cathedrals music director, Russell Jackson; he had very much liked the Italian Fable cum Violin Concerto (The Big Sword and the Little Broom) I had written in 1997 for the Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra. Russell chose the text by Charles Coffin, a French poet and educator whose hymn verses were often translated into English. My approach toward setting the poem was my usual one; that is, to translate literally the words into music (note the dips into the minor mode for the cave of Bethlehem and the child of poverty.) But most of all, I wanted to capture the sense of joy and peace brought by the arrival of the Christ Child.Bethlehem Carol was the result of a commission in 2000 from the Cathedral Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Composed in both traditional and blended choral stylings, this cantata weaves the historic symbolism of both the Lion of Judah and the Lamb of God into the Christmas story. Through original songs and traditional carols, singers and listeners are reminded that this story is not just an event in history, but a living story that still impacts the world today. Narration, solos, congregational participation and optional children's voices, along with gorgeous orchestrations by Keith Christopher, all work together to make this service a time of both celebration and worship. Songs include: Overture/Sing Christmas!; And So We Wait; It Came upon a Midnight Clear; Who's the Little Baby?; Sleep Little Lion, Sleep Little Lamb; Where Is Peace Tonight?; In This Moment; Angels from the Realms of Glory; Carol of the King.
