In 2010 the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments granted a recognitio to The Revised Grail Psalms. This translation was prepared as a liturgical translation intended for use in the Roman Catholic Liturgy. Within a year of its publication, Christian leaders from groups beyond the Roman Catholic Communion expressed appreciation for certain aspects of The Revised Grail Psalms, particularly the poetic quality of the text and the sprung rhythm which facilitates recitation, chant, and musical settings of the texts. They further inquired if we might consider publishing another edition of The Revised Grail Psalms, focusing more directly on the original Hebrew while yet seeking a more inclusive final text of the sort preferred in the current worship of their respective communions. Thus The Ecumenical Grail Psalter came to be. Extracted from the Introduction to The Ecumenical Grail Psalter  Endorsements for The Ecumenical Grail Psalter “A lovely translation! The Ecumenical Grail Psalter retains the elegant simplicity, beauty, and rhythmic flow of earlier Grail Psalms. This makes it ideal for public reading and singing, as well as for individual devotional use. I applaud the inclusive language, and I hope it will be widely read and sung. It is a wonderful gift to the Church!†—J. Clinton McCann, Jr. Evangelical Professor of Biblical Interpretation Eden Theological Seminary “Lyrical in language with an ear for the musicality of words, this fresh revision of the Grail Psalter voices the longing, lament, and lavish praise contained in the Psalms. I especially appreciate the attentiveness to inclusive language, which invites women readers and prayers of these texts to feel more at home in this richly hued rhetorical landscape. The monks of Conception Abbey have offered a gift to the larger ecclesial family, further shaping our liturgical life through engagement with the Psalter. As a Baptist theologian and seminary president, I am deeply grateful.†—Molly T. Marshall President and Professor of Theology and Spiritual Formation Central Baptist Theological Seminary “A translation of the Psalms marked by noble simplicity, accessibility, freshness, and candor. These texts are beautifully singable—well poised for chanting and singing in a variety of cultural contexts. They are also well suited for devotional and liturgical reading, inviting worshipers into the world of the Psalms with vivid, uncluttered language. May this volume be widely received across Christian traditions.†—John D. Witvliet Calvin Institute of Christian Worship Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary.

This psalm collection is arranged according to liturgical year, with the three-year temporal cycle being followed by solemnities, feasts of the Lord, and national holidays presented in chronological order, everything as it appears in the Oramos Cantando / We Pray in Song hymnal. Most of the musical settings of the 144 pairs of English and Spanish psalm refrains in this collection were composed in 2003 either by Tony Alonso, Ronald Krisman, or John Schiavone. In most cases, each pair of refrains share the same melody, occasionally they are counter-melodies to each other, allowing for both languages to be sung simultaneously. Some refrains were further edited, a few were replaced with new refrains composed by Michel Guimont, Kelly Dobbs Mickus, and Ronald Krisman. The psalm tones of Canadian composer Michel Guimont, which enjoy a wide popularity in North America, are used exclusively in this collection. The Lectionary psalms use USCCB-approved refrains in both English and Spanish and verses from The Revised Grail Psalms and the salterio of Spain's Conferencia Episcopal Española (CEE). These bilingual lectionary psalms have been included in the Sacred Song missalette program of The Liturgical Press since 2004. While this collection may be used as a bilingual Lectionary psalter with any musical resource found in the pew, it is specifically linked to GIA's hymnal Oramos Cantando / We Pray in Song.

A complete set of responsorial psalms for Sundays, solemnities, and feasts of the Lord throughout the three-year Lectionary cycle. About the text: The Abbey Psalms and Canticles find their source in the 1963 English language Grail Translation of the Psalms. The Grail Psalms themselves have their origin in the French Bible de Jerusalem which sought to faithfully capture the text stresses or sprung rhythm, of the original Hebrew. The Grail Psalms underwent minor revisions in the 1980s and 1990s. The release of the document Liturgiam authenticam in 2001 required that the Grail Psalms be revised again for use in Roman Catholic liturgy, this time under the direction of Abbot Gregory Polan and the monks of Conception Abbey. Their careful editing and scholarship produced the Revised Grail Psalms in 2010. However, this translation would undergo further (slight) revisions in 2018 leading to the publication in 2020 of The Abbey Psalms and Canticles About the music: Since their publication in 1994, the psalm refrain settings and psalm tones of Canadian composer Michel Guimont have enjoyed wide popularity in North America. These psalm settings have been included as the lectionary psalter in a number of GIA hymnals and have a harmonic freshness and flexibility in performance that makes them a unique and enduring contribution to the Church’s song.  .

This collection of Gelineau psalm settings is a significant resource for celebrations of the Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, or any worship experience that includes the Liturgy of the Word. Some of the antiphons are drawn from the Lectionary for Mass, many are taken from the Liturgy of the Hours, while other antiphons are drawn from the Simple Gradual, making these versatile psalm settings suitable to accompany entrance and communion processions as well. While psalms are traditionally understood as song for cantor and assembly performance, this collection explores many choral possibilities. Depending upon the choice of antiphon, and using one or more of the choral approaches outlined in the introduction to this collection these psalms can become highly satisfying choral literature. For almost sixty years, the Grail-Gelineau psalm system remains as appealing today as when it first appeared. Once you delve deeper into this system of chanting, you are likely to discover a level of artistic beauty not commonly experienced in singing the psalms.

Noted composer M. Roger Holland has taken antiphons from the 2010 Roman Missal and paired them with psalm verses, creating compositions that have wide use in the liturgy. Some parishes will want to use these pieces on the appointed day for entrance or communion processionals. Others may find use for them throughout the entire year, perhaps using them as a weekly song through the season. The songs work well as stand-alone processional pieces and many choirs will want to use them as choir anthems or congregational songs during the preparation of the gifts and altar. While utilizing official texts of the Roman rite, they can be used by congregations of any denomination. Roger explores the wide breadth that is African American music, you’ll find lyric ballades, spiritualinspired offerings, gospel-style songs, and pieces with a more uptempo feel. This is the fourth volume in this series. Contains: O Sing a New Song • God Is Love • Behold Emmanuel • Communion Song For cantor or soloist.
