The artistic impact of Christopher Kyle Green continues to grow. The Lament of Familiar Ruins is a musical depiction of a personal trauma based on a house fire. Inspired and influenced by feelings that words cannot explain, the ensemble is given an opportunity to convey true grief, longing, fear, and emptiness. This symbolic work captivates the performers and audience and creates an atmosphere of experiencing life’s unexpected hardships. With gorgeous yet haunting harmonies and melodies, the concert hall will fill with emotion as the piece encourages individual vulnerability. Appropriate for concert festivals and assessments.

As an inexhaustible proponent of Beethoven's life and work, Franz Liszt (1811-1886) produced a number of arrangements and transcriptions in homage to the great composer. His FANTASIE ÜBER MOTIVEN AUS BEETHOVENS RUINEN VON ATHEN, S. 122 (FANTASY ON BEETHOVEN'S RUINS OF ATHENS) for piano and orchestra is one of three existing versions, all of which he dedicated to Nikolay Rubinstein. The work on which the piece is based, incidental music for a play by August von Kotzebue, was written in 1811 in Pest, Hungary for the dedication of a new theater. The first performance of the FANTASY took place, also in Pest, on June 1, 1853. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2.2.2: 2.2.3.0: Timp.Perc(2-3) Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Pno in Score. Reprint edition.

String Quartet No.3 was written for, and first performed by the Balanescu Quartet, February 1990 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London. Duration 16 minutes. Instrumental parts are available on sale. Quoting composer: In the summer of 1989 I composed a choral work, Out of the Ruins, for Agnieszka Piotrowska's BBC2 documentary which dealt with the physical and emotional responses of some inhabitants of Leninakhan to the earthquake which devastated Armenia the previous December. When he heard the recording of the work that I made with the Holy Echmiadzin Chorus under the fervent conducting of Khoren Meykhanejian, Alex Balanescu suggested turning Out of the Ruins into a string quartet. There seemed no reason or opportunity to do this until I felt the need to add to the intensity of my experiences in Armenia the no less profound experience of witnessing the images of the Romanian revolution on television during the later part of December 1989. The compositional procedure was as follows: to take Out of the Ruins as a template on which the Romanian vocal or instrumental music would be superimposed, quite often stretched into new intervallic shapes though the demands of the completely performed harmonic structure.

The composer made this arrangement of the Third String Quartet for string orchestra in March 2003. The first performance was given by the Eos Orchestra, New York, conducted by Ken Selden in the Concert Hall, Ethical Cultural Society, New York City on 24 April 2003.Quoting composer: In the summer of 1989 I composed a choral work, Out of the Ruins, for Agnieszka Piotrowska's BBC2 documentary which dealt with the physical and emotional responses of some of the inhabitants of Leninakhan to the earthquake which devastated Armenia the previous December. There seemed no reason or opportunity to do this until I felt the need to add to the intensity of my experiences in Armenia the no less profound experience of witnessing the images of the Romanian revolution on television during the latter part of December 1989.Just as the structure of my Third String Quartet (1990) may connect it with the First, so they also share a debt to Thurston Dart (my professor at King's College, London, between 1961 and 1965). It was Dart who had the inspiration to send me to Romania in 1965, ostensibly to study folk music. The volumes of transcriptions that I brought back with me had remained unopened until, with this proposed 'celebratory' string quartet (though at the time it was difficult to know quite what to celebrate in postrevolutionary Romania), an occasion arose where I could use this material in what seemed to me was a non-exploitative manner. The compositional procedure was as follows: to take Out of the Ruins as a template on which the Romanian vocal or instrumental music would be superimposed, quite often stretched into new intervallic shapes through the demands of the completely pre-formed harmonic structure.

The exuberant amorousness of a newly-wed couple pulsates in every note of Gabriel Faure's Dans les ruines d'une abbaye (In the ruins of an abbey). In this piece, the reverent silence of prayer no longer prevails, but within the venerable walls various shouts of joy and sparkling laughter are now heard. The old graves have long been overgrown by stinging nettles, and a new dawn of spring and of love fills the air. Napoleonic post-revolutionary France, which drove the author of the poem, Victor Hugo, into exile, is also building a new world on the ruins of olden days. Although the setting by the composer, 40 years younger than the poet, uses the romanticized backdrop of the old abbey, with its 6/8-meter it reflects the uninhibited happiness of the two lovers, who do not look back. These art songs were originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted them to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD Kennst du das Land ... (Carus 83.495).

Asbjorn Schaathun TRIPLIS+ (1996-98)For mezzo-soprano, percussion, electric organ, alto flute, coranglais, clarinet, violin, viola , cello, double-bass and piano.Triplis+ consists of seven songs based on computer-manipulated text fragments from Wilhelm Muller's 'Die schone Mullerin'. The seven songs should be played without interruption:I) Warum nicht?II)Nicht so...III)AngstIV) Wohin?V) HeimatVI) StilleVII)RuhigThe score of TRIPLIS+ has a long history. The whole project began as a piece for piano and mezzo, DUALIS (1987), to which I added percussion instruments to the vocal and piano parts, which was deeply unsatisfying. (I also suggested certain ways of making different versions of the piece, a so-called 'open score', but this was even worse...) From the ruins of this piece I carved out a new DUALIS (1991), using the same material, but with no percussion instruments added and in the form of a traditional 'frozen' score. In 1993 I was asked to include a separate percussion part for a trio-version of my first undertakings of DUALIS. In close collaboration with the Cikada Trio I created a new version, TRIPLIS (1993) which then in turn was taken as a point of departure for an extended version of the piece called TRIPLIS+ (1996-99). In this 'version integrale', I - due to the requirements of the commission - added an ensemble of 8 instruments, sometimes elaborating material from the mezzo-line, sometimes contradicting or commenting upon it. The piano has a special role in both TRIPLIS+ and TRIPLIS; functioning as a kind of 'libro', the piano textures, which have the feel of an accompanying part, are played ad lib throughout the work. In this way the pianist can change the actual dramatical flow of the piece. The first performance of TRIPLIS+ took place in the Bjergsted Music Centre in Stavanger, Norway in April 1999, with the commissioner, Stavanger Contemporary Music Ensemble under direction of the composer. The score is dedicated to B.Asbjorn Schaathun.

The sounds of ancient Mexico come alive in this thrilling work with powerful percussion writing to tell the story of this Mayan city at the peak of its power. Following a chaotic opening, the piece weaves artfully through a series of cascading bell-tone passages with clashing harmonies. An ideal way to introduce students to mild dissonance in an intense and epic work!

The title has been taken from a review of Robert Schumann of the then newly published Preludes Op. 28. According to this reference, Stefan Heucke's Preludes are tributes to the three great piano composers of the 19th century: Chopin, Liszt and Schumann. By tradition, each of Heucke's 12 Preludes starts from a different keynote while attempting, however, to use major and minor modes at the same time in constantly new combinations.

Inspired by the mascot of Falls Church High School in Virginia, this piece depicts the fierceness and speed of the jaguar. The exciting motif in the key of A minor follows the jaguar deep into the Mayan jungles, with mystical hints of the deity it was once believed to be. In ancient Mayan ruins, carvings of the jaguar are still visible today. They tell a story of the powerful cat whose eyes reflected in the night, leading the Maya people to call it the god of terrestrial fire. The music follows the jaguar on a hunt with driving rhythms in the cellos and basses, a brief violin solo, and an energetic melody that runs and leaps like the mighty jaguar, fearless and proud.
