With the narrations and text derived from notable Christmas poems and carols both ancient and modern, this seasonal music service makes its mark as a sophisticated, inspired and effective conveyer of the familiar Christmas story. This unique approach is reminiscent of the well-known Lessons and Carols format, but causes one to think anew about the meaning of Christmas through poetry rather than scripture. Accompanied by organ, Word Made Flesh incorporates familiar carols throughout, ending with a fully developed carol quodlibet as a finale. (Limit one per church).

This collection of reflections on life and God’s word flows from our shared faith in the Incarnation, our coming to believe that when God spoke, it was not a one-time occurrence. God’s Word-made-flesh continues to echo across every generation, in every culture and every people. Occasionally people of faith will detect it echoing in their own lives, or as the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins noted, they will recognize it “like shining from shook foil.†This volume is an ideal companion for small group scripture study, preaching preparation, and personal reflection and inspiration.

Bach created the cantata Erhohtes Fleisch und Blut by setting the sacred words to what had originally been the music of a secular cantata, presumably for the festival of Pentecost in 1727. Bach made few alterations to the musical structure, but he enlarged the original solo scoring for soprano and bass to a four-voice ensemble. Particularly notable among the solo movements is the extensive duet for soprano and bass in the form of a minuet, which in its musical language is certainly unique in Bach's cantatas. The dancelike final chorus brings the four voices together, and gives highly effective expression to the joy of Pentecost. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3117300.
